GB/GBC/GBA Collecting Thread

Good god, Akihabara is so overpriced. Out in the burbs, I was finding cheap games, like Rhythm Tengoku for $15. But when I went to Akiba yesterday, copies were over $30. Even a standard issue GBA was like $30-40.

tourist trap. This reminds me to ask: what are the good online shops for retro games from japan? most of them seem to have a severely limited selection and/or obscene prices.

I'm not sure. I don't buy games online here. If I wanted to, though, I'd most likely start with Amazon or Yahoo Auctions.

Damn, today I've received my first counterfeit GBA cartridge from ebay. It's so weird, it was a CIB game. The box, manual, and inserts (even club nintendo PIN) all seem to be legit. The cartridge, on the other hand, doesn't quite fit all the way in the cartridge slot. The back of the cartridge, and the PCB have Nintendo markings but they are written in a weird font that is clearly different from any of my original games.
When I play the game, I get no sound, and it freezes before starting a race. It's Mario Kart BTW.
The seller claims that he can send a new cartridge and that he will send me pictures so I can aprove it. I'm not too optimistic but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I really don't want to ship it back because it'd be a waste of money.

Aww man that sucks.

I'd be interested in seeing some pics, if you feel like posting some.

That blows. Hopefully it will work out for you. Just curious, what was the name of the game?

he said it was mario kart :p

it's really bizarre that that would happen with a CIB game. Maybe the seller lost his copy, but had the box and such so he just bought the cheapest one he could find and it was fake?

Getting the damn camera to focus on such a small object was a bitch but here you go:

Thanks for your efforts, very interesting! Yes the back certainly doesn't look right. But even the front Gameboy Advance logo doesn't look good. Weird that they would bother putting Nintendo on the PCB too. It must be a later pirate cart.

Are there any good/reliable places online to buy import gba games? I've been wanting to add the Silent Hill Play Novel to my collection, but there are none on Amazon and ebay has a complete set for $70 which is a bit much.

Looks like our boy Lee_Chan came across a few more backlit GBA LCDs (AGS-101) and is selling a few kits on ebay, albeit a higher price than previously, but still less than what some backlit GBAs are going for. I'd hop on them if you have any interest (I'd PM the person who tore their cable but I cannot recall who that was)

That's really a premium, but I guess it's justified since there probably the last of them for a while. I'm just glad I got in the backlight game early. $70 + shipping is really dear...

Since Trip World was mentioned lately, which reminded me that I hadn't beaten it yet, I finally finished it yesterday. Well I guess I cheated a bit. I played through to the boss rush and got a game over, but then I discovered that you can press Select on the title screen to get a Stage Select/Sound Test menu. So I played the last part of the last stage until I beat it. Took a few tries but now I more or less know the pattern of the bosses. Next time I'll do it for real hopefully.

GBA was the coolest thing ever. Imported one the day it came out and bought a bunch of Japanese games for it. So many good games for it. The Castlevania games, FFTA, Tactics Ogre:TKoL..

Had a GBA<->PC cable as well. Made some random games for it.. it was surprisingly easy to program on.

Yeah, I noticed something wasn't right just by looking at it but unfortunately the screens on ebay didn't show the cartridge up close, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

The seller now says that he doesn't have a replacement so I should just ship it back and get my refund. Any advice? I'm guessing the shipping costs for giving it back won't be refunded so I don't know if it is worth it. What if I ship it back and he claims to not have received it? Should I even have to send back counterfeit items? I'd rather destroy it given the chance.

Anyone else do this to store their games? Thinking of picking up some card sleeves and taking a big binder home from work to try this out...My games are sort of tossed in a shoe box right now, and I don't like it!

I don't have enough to justify it, I think. I keep them in those individual plastic cases, which is in turn in a small drawer.

**Friendly reminder that RCG is getting more micro faceplates today, for those who missed their chance.

I only have 35 games, but it seems like a nice way to organize as my collection grows.

You can file a return with eBay or a dispute. Return shipping is covered for counterfeit goods.

I'm planning to post a picture of me and my gf's collection soon (including C-Drive's Ice Blue GB Pocket, which he graciously sold to me), but meanwhile, this just arrived and I had to share :D
Man I loved this game as a kid. Can't wait to play it later.

I have fond memories of this game as well, it was great!

Is this the game that got a DS release too? I've always meant to try it out.

Apparently yes! Didn't realize they did a DS release. Upon checking out Wikipedia, the GBA version was considered one of the best games of 2006 for the system. It's definitely a hidden gem as I paid a whole $3 for it, ha.

The person who tore their cable already posted here that they got a replacement :)

I talked to Lee Chan and they are from AGS-101 systems. Still not bad considering the going rate now.

Btw peagles, what tools (brand names, etc.) do you use for mods? looking to get a soldering iron of some sort and I'm curious what your opinion is since you are quite knowledgable. Would send a PM, but i figure I'm probably not the only person wondering.

I'm not overly knowledgeable, but I usually just grab whatever's at my local hobby electronics stores (Jaycar and Surplustronics). I'm not even sure they have brand names as such. I think my soldering iron was about $20 NZD. I think you just want something lowish in wattage for console stuff, mine's 20W and I probably wouldn't go any higher than 30W for the work I do. The staff in there are usually pretty good at recommending stuff too, and heaps more knowledgeable than me, so if in doubt just ask.

Man, Kirby Tilt n Tumble is more fun than I remember and the tilt controls are really, really good. I was expecting some clunkyness or input lag it being a GBC game and all, but it controls perfectly, easily beats some "motion" games I've played on my Nexus 4 this year, wow.

We need a sequel.

Agreed.

Another GB classic that should have got a sequel was Mole Mania. DS would have been a perfect setup for that game.

eBay is your friend. Tonnes of fakes games on there.

It goes against all my instincts to purchase that crap. And whereas initially I was getting game + manual to put in the UniversalGameCases.com covers, now I've switched over more to getting complete since I found sweet protectors. Plus I've actually come to a point where I'm starting to focus on DS since I rebuilt much of my ravaged collection (parents home robbed years ago, took a bunch of my games mostly portable which was kept separate from hidden console stuff)

Price went from $70 to $100! And they're almost gone. The situation looks bleak...

It was bleak since they stopped production, lol.

I paid about the same just for the last few LCDs I nabbed, so it really wasn't that bad.

Wow at those AGS-101 prices! Jeez, I should've kept mine instead of selling it on the B/S/T for $40 last year, haha. Oh well, at least it went to someone who was going to put it to good use.

FYI, selling some GBA (and other handheld) games:

Namco Museum GBA
Prince of Persia GBA
Megaman and Bass GBA
Gunstar Super Heroes GBA (might be CIB, have to see if I have the box)
Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace for GBA
Super Monkey Ball 3DS
Moon DS
Pilotwings Resort 3DS
Docomodake DS
Meteos DS
Scribblenauts DS

PM if interested. In the US but happy to sell internationally. Happy to sell/trade for cheap, just want to declutter a bit.

I love the AGS-101 as it is, why bother putting it in a clone original GBA shell?

Also you could likely get a complete poor condition AGS-101 for much cheaper, gut it and stick it in a GBA if you wish. Search eBay for 'brighter GBA' or something, listings with AGS-101 in them know of the value already.

That said, I'm considering getting a new shell for my 101, maybe a red one. I'd love a Famicom one actually.

They give you a label to print out

I didn't see that option, I'd only let add tracking information. Anyway, the seller agreed to send replacement cartridge he found, after I asked him to cover shipping costs. He sent me these pictures:

Unfortunately, he couldn't get good pictures of the PCB but he send 2 more pictures of the back of the cartridge with the Gamestop sticker removed:

Opinions? The Nintendo logo on the back and the screw look alright to me. I'd be surprised if this one is a fake too. He already shipped it to me so it should be a week or so until it gets here.

I would love to get a fake game and open it up to show comparisons to help flesh out my "How to spot a fake" guide....
I want to take pictures of the inside too. Do you know if I can get a tri-wing screwdriver on a regular hardware store?

You can grab one for a few bucks from amazon (I paid literally $4 with Prime). If you get it I'd love to add those pics to the rest of my guide.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 showed up today! Just need to find the first 1 for a decent price.

Also, playing more Scurge...I still like it, but its starting to feel a bit like work more than play. Not sure if I'll finish it.
