Why isn't Nintendo making MORE games like Splatoon?

Because nobody will buy them.

^This.

Where was everyone when F-Zero GX came out? And that game is from an established series!

Completely new games are very risky to make nowadays and the only ones to blame are the consumers.

Nintendo is probably the company who has released more IP's in the last 10 years... sadly, people only buy the main franchises...

just to mention a few:
-Trace Memory
-Drill Dozer
-Geist
-Chibi-Robo
-Hotel Dusk
-Disaster
-Endless Ocean
-Captain Rainbow
-Zengeki something
-Flingsmash
-Steel Diver
-The three "Operation Rainfall" RPG's
-Pushmo
-Dillon
-Wonderful 101

and I'm sure I'm missing a lot.

^This too.

Most people don't want completely new games, they just think they do.

If those new ips relate to the usual Nintendo demographic, they are useless..

Splatoon has a big potential i think, and could be a mainstream sucess if it was aimed at teens/young adults. But it's clearly aimed at kids (and Nintendo enthusiasts).

Take the same concept, give it sunset overdrive characters direction.. You can now hope for something.

Alas they will need more than one new ip (even if it was aimed at the right people) to create a shift.

Other than that i guess it's good to create new characters so they can have new things to put in smash bros and mario kart.

I think its wise to wait and see how the game is received before jumping to conclusion.

Also, what is so innovative about Splatoon? Are Nintendo fans this much unaccustomed to new IPs?

Doesn't seem like a very ambitious game to me, it has a potentially interesting game mechanic and a colorful art-style what else?

of course, I can't argue against your opinion... it's just the fact that you're calling games like W101, Disaster, Xenoblade and Hotel Dusk "second class" that made me re-realize why we can't have nice things on Nintendo consoles.

fuck.

Well they're second class compared to EAD but I wouldn't feel too bad about my opinion. I just wanted to elaborate why some people might feel that Nintendo isn't doing enough with new IP's.

Better question is, why has Nintendo such a problem to make clear they are doing it (Splatoon, STEAM etc.). I mean, many still don´t get Fire Emblem is a Nintendo IP.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Did you just call Platinum Games and MonolithSoft second class?

is this one of those "why doesn't nintendo make new ip" threads huh, only sprinkled with a different coating?

Splatoon and CodeName Steam are Nintendo´s way of saying "Fine! You want new I.P.? Take a look at THIS"

Both looks colorful and exciting, while Splatoon looks like a revolution of the genre, CNSteam looks like strategic bliss.

I need them both so hard and for Nintendo to keep supporting games like this we need to buy them. So go get those wallets ready.

Is this New-Think or what? The consumer (= potential customer) is at fault that a game doesn't sell well?

Did you miss Codename S.T.E A.M in this same direct?
I think OP has, or maybe it doesn't count for some reason(?). That game looks really good, and I like that IntSys stepped away from the artstyle they usually have in their games and tried out something new for them.

(Can't wait to see it on the 3DS screen for myself and play the game. :D)

why would they be unaccustomed to new ips? Nintendo makes a ton of them all the time.

and an interesting game mechanic and great art style isn't enough to justify being excited about a game? what?

Somebody call every shooter developer from 1998-2004 and tell them Nintendo invented actually having color in your shootbang.
The world according to Nintendo fans, they think Nintendo invented everything (probably because they only play Nintendo games).

A shooter with more colors than grey, brown, and piss yellow?

That's pretty innovative.
Nope, not at all.

I didn't say it has great art style, but I was actually just asking a question. As for Nintendo "making a ton of(new ips) them all the time", please.

Most of Nintendo's internal development sectors were caught up on the whole expanded audience demographic last generation.

Sooo EAD spent the generation creating Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Nintendogs, Big Brain Academy, and Mii Apps. They were successful. I mean they create a certain amount of new intellectual properties every generation, it's just that not much of NeoGaf wasn't thrilled about the above offerings.

There's also other internal teams other than the EAD Division in the same building like Kawamoto's Brain-Age and AR Games group. Also, Sakamoto's underground team that made Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi Collection, and Kiki Trick.

Nintendo uses a fairly standard business model in the industry, rely on legacy franchise that are guaranteed to sell in order to finance riskier projects that might or might not break out and become franchises.

Game has potential but it's doomed by its platform health. It's also the kind of game that requires voice chat at all time and I doubt Nintendo is going to go with that because Nintendo.

The world according to Nintendo fans, they think Nintendo invented everything (probably because they only play Nintendo games).

Nope, not at all.

I'll ignore the dumb "Nintendo fans" argument but yeah "it's colorful" isn't really the reason people are exited for it really (and it's a stupid argument anyway)

The innovation comes from the the traversal mechanics, which could lead to pretty interesting tactics in order to cover ground quickly.

Some people may also think that having a shooter that doesn't rely on killing people as the main win condition is refreshing, although it's not particularly new.

of course you didn't, but it does.

also, maybe you should read the thread? for someone who talks about Nintendo fans living in a bubble, you sure seem to be living in a little one of your own.

One and done.

People complain about lack of new IPs on Nintendo consoles, games like Wonderful 101 and Splatoon are made and sell 10 copies, and the cycle repeats.

Like, I wish it wasn't true, but just the fact that the question "why aren't there more new IPs" is even asked when there's tons that they put out there in the last few years...

...yeah, shit is depressing.

In my holy opinion? Yes, until proven otherwise.

Just play Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade. Hard to argue that they are two great games with lauded critical success.

It's okay to have an opinion and not be fond of certain games, but they are pretty clearly not 2nd-rate developers. I don't care for Bioware games, but I can accept they are a pretty 1st-rate (Canadian-made) developer.

I have a feeling Splatoon will sell <50k in the first week. Predicting <200k overall

The problem is that the Wii U is dead for anything that isn't called Smash Bros or Zelda. Even Xenoblade X probably won't move that many copies, even though I hope it does.

Can't believe W101 only sold around 5k copies in Japan for its first week. That's abysmal. WW sales are at like 250k, must have lost millions.

It does remind me a lot of the paints in Portal 2(and that was taken from another game), obviously with a different effect and that's why I think it might be an interesting game. As for the visuals I don't see anything special, but that is just me.

Splatoon looks wonderful. It's certainly convinced me to buy a Wii U...

Balancing innovation and financial safety is never easy and Nintendo is surely being careful with the uphill battle that has been their new console. I hope their work here is successful enough to warrant further experimentation...

What really gets me excited about the game (besides the colorful artstyle and aesthetic) is just how many layers the mechanics have (typical shooter stuff, traversal, territory control)

- Squid traversal can be used to run on walls (and everything else) and can be used to sneak up on opponents. You also reload ink by swimming.

- You can cancel out opponents' traversal with your own ink and trap them in it. On the flip side, you need to constantly watch out and lay down your own ink to keep moving.

- Kills are a part of it but not the main focus, so less experienced players (or just people focused on the team objective) can still be a valuable part of the team by covering territory in ink.

Now this single player trailer is showing traversal being used for crazy puzzle/platforming and it looks awesome

To me, at least, the game seems to be taking influence from crazy arena shooters and mixing them with colorful mascot platformers. I would consider that ambitious.

In an Iwata Asks awhile back with GameFreak they were talking about how HarmoKnight was the result of a similar program where GameFreak gives staff 3 months to work on a "pet project". Iwata compared the system to Google's 20% time. I was impressed to see that he'd given some thought to those kinds of systems. Nice to see a similar program has been implemented at EAD.

wut.

Consumers decide what gets made by purchasing or not purchasing whatever product. It doesn't matter if the product is even good or not. People will buy anything and that influences companies. Sure, you can put some blame on marketing or lack thereof but what truly ends up shaping any industry is what people buy.

Non-Mario, Smash, and Zelda games? Nintendo releases plenty of new IP games, and if anybody bothered to notice, they'd make more. Nintendo's release schedule would be so full that no third party support would be even necessary if their so-called 'fans' weren't so utterly fixated on only the 2-3 mainstay titles released per year.

I honestly would have bought it if this was with Mario characters and had Mario music. Splatoon's street style doesn't appeal to me at all.

Gameplay just.....doesn't matter?

You must really find the art style abhorrent.

Wolfenstein was a pretty colorful shooter, and that was '92.

Eh, I just remember various shades of red.

Or was that Doom...

The world according to Nintendo fans, they think Nintendo invented everything (probably because they only play Nintendo games).

It's amazing how people with an irrational hatred of Nintendo have absolutely no sense of humor... almost like they are dead inside.

And Nintendo invented an awful lot.... entire genres, controllers and feedback mechanisms that most young gamers take for granted. Oh, and they single-handedly resurrected the video game industry with the NES. Welcome to video game history 101.

The entire concept is that they are squid-human hybrids. Besides, that sounds incredibly boring. There is enough of the Mario only universe going around.

I have to give you some credit here, much more subtle than the general troll, but the "unaccustomed to new IPs" dig gave away the agenda, especially considering how we've already had lists of all the new Nintendo IPs just a few posts back from this one.
