Well if the publishers are involved, I'm actually looking forward to it. The last show felt like a mockery.

Good on Geoff for getting on GAF to answer questions!

Firstly, congrats geoffmk on organizing such an event :)

Secondly, how did this idea come about? And how involved were Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft in the creation of this Game Awards show, as the Variety article implies that they "paired-up" to build such a format.

I would love to know. Thanks :D

Earlier this year I decided that I didn't want to do another VGX, so I started talking with everyone about what we SHOULD do. I approached all the first and third parties with my concept for a show and asked for their endorsement. I was honored that pretty much everyone came on board to support what I'm building. Given everything that has gone on this year I really wanted to build a show that unites everyone -- the publishers, the press, the fans -- to celebrate how much we love games.

Sounds like a good idea.
Electronic Arts, Kojima Productions, Rockstar Games, Sony PlayStation,
Ubisoft, Valve, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Xbox and the
Video Game Industry Unite with Producer Geoff Keighley For a
New Celebration of the Defining Entertainment Medium of The 21st Century
Why isn't Nintendo in this list? (Important, hard hitting questions right here!)

Good stuff.

Will you be the sole host, or will you have another host/co-host while you do the showrunning?

Maybe they don't wanna get shown up.

Hey geoff! So I work at gamestop and recently they've been showing these sit down interviews with you and a bunch of other folks. There's one in particular with peter Moore, maybe its the chemistry you guys but I really really enjoyed that interview. It came off as really genuine. If the show is anything like that im all for it! It was mentioned before, just be respectful. comedy is fine, as long as its tasteful

I don't trust this will have megatons like Fallout 3 or The Last of Us. We will probably get Indie reveals and trailers of games we know about. Especially with Sony having an event the next day I don't think they will show much.

Looks like I'll be watching then :)

Joel just made video games look like a huge joke last year.

I prefer light hearted but at the same time giving developers and viewers the respect they deserve.

Joel was the only reason to watch the show last year, he did his best to try and salvage a little entertainment from that train wreck. The faces of south park guys basically summed up the entire show.

Whose idea was it to film it live in front of no audience then expect applauding?

2.) The awards will be selected by a combination of the press and fans. More details will be announced in the coming weeks about that.

I hope there is something in place to make sure there is some genre variety and that coverage isn't completely skewed toward one type of game or publisher and the rest just getting a footnote due to various bias that exist out there.

Its something we see with gaming media sites now. Hand held games ignored for GOTY consideration simply because they're hand held games regardless of quality. Or a few years ago where some places might possibly ignore Wii games simply because they weren't in HD and focus just on PS3/360 games for GOTY. Even possibly leaving out PC as well. Or focusing on western brands over Japanese. That's the type of bias I hope there is an attempt to avoid and makes sure doesn't appear in the selection process.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
If there's no Joel, I'll just watch the trailers later on. He made the VGX a watchable event.

Geoff, hire this guy as a writer because this joke is hilarious.

Yo Geoff, great work with the The Last of Us : One Night Live show, much respect. Was a hell of a show.

I would say just don't pander to the audience like we are still 10 year old kiddies with our Nintendo's. Thats how it feels sometimes with the cheap humor and such. I don't HAVE to laugh at an awards show. Just let it be a night to celebrate the creators of the games we love and to hand out awards to those who work so hard to put these games on our screens, or to provide awesome voice acting to our characters, or awesome music to our backgrounds.

you realize that the audience they were pandering to in the past were dudebros who love teabagging jokes, right? Not exactly the Nintendo audience. And gtfo of here with that Nintendo = kiddie nonsense, shit is toxic.

Thanks, Peter Moore is a great guy.

I think we will err more on the side of celebration than comedy this year.

Not sure I'm supposed to announce this yet, but we're expanding the judges to international media -- Japan, Europe, etc.

That said people will ALWAYS take issue with nominees in any awards. Gaming awards are even tougher than other mediums because a group of games -- the first party titles -- aren't playable on all systems, meaning a popular vote is always skewed.

Geoff, what about a no-CG policy?

Sounds like you have extensive influence on the content of the event. The killing of CG reveals is long overdue, now's the time.

I don't want to see Dishonored 2 if it's just a minute of a Blur-made mechanical mask.

I could see Sony doing a bunch of small teasers at the award show to try to get more interest in theirs. Imagine if they did something simple like flash the god of war logo, people would absolutely tune in then.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Thanks mate!

Hoping for the best and looking forward to maybe a Reggie segment ;)

Geoff, has Gametrailers anything to do with this? The GT team is really passionate and passion is always something that helps with these kind of shows.

And I must say, this sounds super ambitious and like a ton of work. The advisory board is really impressive and maybe this will be the show we have been waiting for. I really want this to be great.

Looking at the awards of last year I would love to see some new categories:

I'm not opposed to CG stuff when it's right -- Blur does amazing work. But I hear you on more in-game content. That's really up to publishers too. I have some say, but the reveals are really driven by publishers and what they are willing to show off.

Will definitely watch, Geoff is definitely saying all the right things this year.

Hopefully as a Nintendo fan I get at least one cool announcement, even if the announcement is that there's a Nintendo Direct the next day :p

I respect what the work Geoff puts in, but I won't be falling for the hype train, this is the same guy that hyped last year's train wreck. Hopefully I will eat crow and it delivers but I'm not holding my breath.

Hi guys - Thanks for the interest. Happy to answer questions about the show here on GAF.

Will we be seeing any sort of shake up with the categories? Aside from the expected genre-based awards, will we be seeing awards for artistic and audio design, for instance? Will somebody still be entered into the Hall of Fame?

Also, you should get a general name for the awards, much like how the Academy Awards are known as Oscars.
