343i Matchmaking / Launch Issues Update

It is funny that for some people it has just become accepted and normal to expect problems like this for big game releases. It's like some people have been conditioned to just accept it.

How about buying a new car but it might not work for the first few days?

The new Blu-Ray movie you bought might not show the entire movie until a couple days after release.

The refrigerator can't keep your food cold until the kinks are worked out.

Yes I know these are rediculous analogies, I just think it is sad that this has become somewhat of the norm for big releases. It's apparently ok to be unprepared. Maybe that worked as an excuse years ago when huge multiplayer focused releases were in their infancy, but there is no reason to be unprepared for this anymore. These companies know what to expect but they are still more often than not left standing there with their pants down. Then it's just apology, apology, excuse, apology etc. Here's some crappy free game as a consolation. Here is a weekend of free Xbox Live. It's the same thing over and over again.

Yet we keep on buying them. They've got us by the balls.

Man, I remember getting Halo 3 home from Gamestop on Day 1 at 12:30, jumping onto XBL and playing for HOURS game after game. I guess those kind of days are gone now.

Can't wait for this game to get out of Early Access though, it shows real promise!

I had to do a hard reboot (hold down power button for 6 seconds), in order to get the "Syncing data" message. After that, I got right into a game.

You could probably get a refund digitally from MS support.

On physical *shrug* YMMV

I'm supposedly receiving a full refund for the digital version of MCC. I simply talked with a MS rep on their online chat support this morning, which took about 10 minutes. They were a bit persistent with the "troubleshooting steps" in order to "correct the issue", but after saying "yes, I did that" a few times, they submitted my refund request.

Releasing software in a half-ass state is quickly becoming the norm, and complacence should not be expected from paying consumers.

It is working for a lot of players. The only thing that doesn't work is match making. Custom Games Work and complete single player works.

Completely false. Game has crashed three times in three levels on single player. Has not saved progress. And glitched out when trying to open terminals.

Edit: until this product I persobally have never seen a halo game crash.

Which Campaign Are You playing?
Played Halo Ce First three missions. Not a Single crash.

They really need to fix some of the control layouts.

If you use Green Thumb, zoom and switch grenades are both mapped to right bumper.

If you use Green Fingers, you can't click in the left stick to crouch even though the diagram says you should be able to

I'm probably going to just get a refund later and just by it second hand in a few months. Will see what it's like later tonight

Didn't the game come out yesterday?

Take a chill pill folks. If it is one or two weeks after a release, and things are still horrible...then I say go for it.

I would never abandon a game I looked forward to less than 48 hours after it came out. I can't imagine being that impatient.

Anyone interested in setting up a JIRA or other bug tracking system? Even if 343i doesn't look at it, it would be a good way for the community to track the issues.

So no one is safe. I think devs need to calm down with online features. If it is work, stay there and no need to innovative.

What's the trick? I try going through matchmaking and it just says it's searching for players.

Make sure it shows the "Searching..." slots on the right (under your name). In the top-right it should say "In lobby" rather than "My game session". If you see the latter, just keep backing out and restarting matchmaking until you get "In lobby".

It's been working for me, anyways.

Welp, this is just another lesson that these online games need large-scale beta testing. They are way too complicated to get it right on the first go.

This seems to be the stance many people are taking, I just shrug it off as venting frustration, they will be online like everyone else once the bugs are worked out

We will put up with absolute bullshit all for the love of fun. honestly I can't believe Microsoft let this out the gate with these issues. You would think the MCC would be immaculate before they threw this thing out. People have been looking at this as their reason to Xbone and get over the 180 bs and they throw this out. Yeah they may get it up and running but that casual audience does not have the patience to wait and they'll go back to CoD in a heartbeat.

It's possible, and I'm hoping that's the case. It's just really disappointing that this wasn't handled pre-release. Online issues always have variables such as server load and everything, but the campaigns....come on.

Yeah, and I get all the complaints around here. I only had time last night to play some custom with friends and we had a blast. Obviously I wasn't able to try other things (campaign, MM, etc), so I can't really say much. But yeah, if by te time I get to try those things everything is as fucked up as it seems from the reactions of you guys, then I'm gonna start throwing shit out the window.

I hope that at least for next week everything is OK, not perfect, but at least playable.
next week I've got the whole week off work. Didn't want to get days off on launch because I knew that it was likely that the first days were kinda a mess...but not like this.

Thanks man. I'm going to hop on now and hope that I get lucky.

Haven't they tested these things before proudly saying the game went Gold?

They should downgrade it to Silver.

Edit: I own a copy and I'm on the same boat you all are.

Matchmaking seems like a more and more difficult thing to nail down in the last couple of years. Maybe I just don't fully understand, or maybe there is a larger install base for online games, but I certainly appreciate the quick fixes 342i are doing. Value is what is worth my dollar. If I miss 3 days but get 4 - 6 months of enjoyment out of the package then I'd say my $60 was well spent. If it's full retail and broken like SimCity/Diablo/Driveclub after X amount of time I'll lose interest and it will lose value.

Get the game running and I won't even be mad. Just learn from your silly mistake for next time.

Yeah I want online to work, but I will only be playing this split screen with my son (both Campaign and MM). So, even if they get the online working it will be for naught (for me) if split-screen play is under-performing. I have this sitting in my closet for my son as a Xmas present, I will be keeping a close eye on how they improve split-screen coop.

We did this some on Halo 4 on the 360, but the lower res really hinders our enjoyment. 1080p would have made this great, and why we were excited for this. Hopefully this makes it on 343's to-do list.

They test them, but the issue is that these games come in hot to meet the release schedule and they don't all go through proper beta testing. Look at a game like Destiny, which had an alpha and beta, and how well the launch went. Then you have games like BF4, DC, and MCC, which did not have betas and have much more problematic launches.

There's not much that's innovative when the online functions from previous Halo titles have either been simplified or removed entirely.

That list of bugs looks more like Martin Luther's list of 95 Theses. About to hammer that shit on a church door or something.

Is there a white Xbox One bundle that doesn't include Sunset Overdrive? I haven't been following these recent deals, because I'm afraid I might regret my $350 deal.

GeoNeo

I disagree.
I was excited as fuck for this but sadly it has been nothing but disappointment so far.

Match making is fucking screwed.

Lots of annoying bugs.

And worst of all tried to play h1 co-op with a friend last night and it was a slide show.

Expected much better from a flagship title. Fucking hell.

Nightfall played perfectly for me, but I think the CGI dude who did the Elite made him a bit too slow / stocky.

Had zero issues with singleplayer, but once matchmaking hung after one attempt, I figured there was an issue and came to GAF after being gone for a day or two. Looks like I missed a bunch of drama!

Roughly a day after release, and there are hotfixes and an itemized list of known issues put out by the project leads. Assuming there are meaningful results in the next several days, I'm happy with the response. I've seen a lot of people playing and enjoying themselves online.

Dudes fixing this quick. Mad respect to them. Imagine if it had been weeks and still not fixed? That would have been frustrating.

I really am enjoying and chuckling at these rosy nostalgia goggles people have with some of the previous Halos and their online working right out of the gate. I seem to remember the absolute SHIT storm that happened in the gaming culture due to Halo 2 online not being completely ironed out for the first week or two, so much, I remember seeing something in the "real" news about it, a time in history that gaming press was only about how it is violent and fucking up your kidz. :)

Perhaps he should open his wrists for you as a sign of penance.

That may be a bit much, but we'll take it.

Seriously though, the "every effort was made" part of the apology rings a bit hollow. It's quite clear that isn't true given the scale of bugs and issues in the game. For example, Halo 4 single player crashes to a black screen with red console text telling you to reboot the system because it doesn't have a catch handler for when it can't connect to a server. You don't ship production code that spits out console text.
