Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Patch 2 broke 3440x1440 resolution for me. Before Patch 2 this res worked fine. Now it just won't apply and remains at 2560x1080 (despite the UI saying differently.) Odd thing to break with a patch.

Guys I'm scared.
I want to play this, but i've got a AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE overclocked at 4.0, and i've also got a Radeon HD 7850 2GB.

Thankfully I output to a cruddy tv thats 60hz, but alls i'm looking for is 45-60 fps. Advanced Warfare seems to run fine with these settings.

Am I correct in thinking that my pc isn't beef enough for unity?

I think the patch broke TXAA as well.

It's almost like when it's enabled it's acting like AA is turned off. I get shimmering and jaggies everywhere.

Ingame FXAA looks better than TXAA right now.

So uh... I just bought the game. First thing that happens is Uplay goes down, so I wait, install the game and download the patch. Now I can FINALLY play, but it has already crashed TWICE just playing the prologue. One time before it even loaded and just now exactly once I finished it.

Bad performance/unoptimization is one thing, but the game should at the very least RUN. I have a GTX 970 and everything for gods sake.

Jesus Christ Ubisoft.

E: Now it won't even start anymore...
E: Well, after a PC reboot it at least gets me to the menu. Lets see how long I can play again before running into any problems.

Try to verify files. It worked for me when game was crashing.

You will have to disable cloud sync in uplay then delete your save file.

*sigh* where's the save file located?

After an hour of trying to make this thing run with a PS4 controller... I can now enjoy popups that make ultra settings a total waste. Is there any chance that they will patch this?(This year)

Just played a few more missions and I literally shed a tear when I got to the
rift mission after the server sweep
. My frames doubled and the game played smooth as butter with the NPCs gone...

Why can't they give us a slider to lower the amounts of NPCs? I mean I get a heavy headache from looking at them anyways (clothing & hair popping in 24/7).

Will try this, thanks.

I've played through the second part of the prologue now and it once again crashed at the end, so it seems to only happen when the game starts loading something new.

Patch 2 improved my cutscene framerate to 40-50 fps and increased gameplay by 2-3 frames so now cutscenes are 40-50 fps while gameplay is 20-30 fps

My cpu is only at 25% load which just cant be right lol but we'll see if another few patches make it better

This just dawned on me, but is this the first Assassin's Creed game to have not been delayed on the PC?

I7 4770K OC'd to 4.0ghz
GTX 780 factory OC'd (902/954)
8gb of RAM
344.65 WHQL drivers.

30-50fps in very crowded areas, very rarely reach 60fps except in some cutscenes where little is happening.
FXAA, High textures, rest on max (PCSS, env. ultra high).

More demanding than I thought, lowering LOD yields a minuscule boost in FPS.
I'm 100% CPU bound.

The game plays beautifully for a while, hovering close to 60FPS at all times, but then it suddenly starts to stutter about every 2-3 seconds. It almost seems like the game engine loop resets itself to keep up. This can be seen by clothes and hair on NPCs "jumping" a bit, like the physics engine has just been started. The only solution seems to be to restart the game. This can also start to happen when doing fast travel, or starting a coop mission. It seems related to when the engine loads in a lot of assets. Here are my specs:

ASUS X99-S
Intel 5820K 6-core
Nvidia GTX 690 2GB VRAM (running in SLI mode) Driver 344.65
Samsung 840 EVO 1TB
Windows 7 (fully updated)

Game settings (the issue occurs regardless, but I'll include them anyway):
Environment quality: Ultra High
Texture quality: High
Shadow quality: PCSS
Ambient Occlusion: HBAO+
Bloom: On

Any other SLI users seeing anything similar?

Not currently at my desk, but iirc, High Texture quality recommends 3GB of VRAM. It could be that which eventually causes the stuttering. Have you tried with the low textures?

I was encountering this myself and it's the big reason as to why I've decided to put the game on the backburner for the time being. My guess is little care for VRAM management, so eventually the 2GB fills up and the engine has to start swapping out data whenever it needs to load something else. This would explain why the game runs more or less fine for a time only to later fall apart. Changing to low textures didn't help much at all.

I recall Ubi saying that Watch Dogs' PC performance issues were chalked down to the engine being geared around the single pool of RAM in current-gen consoles, so hopefully Unity gets the same post-release TLC, but WD took a good few months to notably improve and we're nearing Christmas, meaning we could be in for a bit of a wait.

im on 780SLI and dont get stuttering. try lowering your textures. i believe you need 3gb VRAM for High.

Because amount of NPCs have an effect on gameplay for certain missions

I don't know why do we keep expecting anything from ubisoft on pc. I haven't seen a single good port from them on pc(aside from rayman origins and all games with that engine). from what i have seen, all games from the ps3 era(i did not play on pc before) are utterly awful. can anyone tell me otherwise?

So all of you who have a stock GTX 970. What's the highest settings you can run that still get you 1080p and 60fps?

What about those that have GTX 970 SLI?

I'm trying to gauge which GPU I should start saving money for right now.

Yeah, that's likely the cause I guess. Which is frustrating. The 690 runs it like butter for quite a while, but then it becomes stutter city. Fuck VRAM. If only GPU RAM was expandable as well :)

I get identical performance whether I'm online or off on both a 4810/860m laptop and a 2600k/970 desktop.

EDIT: Tested the game for a few minutes on my laptop after downloading the patch, don't notice any immediate differences, LOD/pop-in and everything seems the same along with performance being roughly similar.

Got my first crash.
I'm after patch, but honestly it was after, like, 2 hours of gameplay, so i can't say if its was the patch or not.
I was in the customization screen, and the game froze, had to CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it.

There is a difference between a badly optimized port and a graphically/hardware demanding game

We dont have enough information to determine if its badly optimized because theres nothing to compare it to beside Batman Origins or other Ubisoft titles
