Digital Foundry vs GTAV on XONE - performance analysis

I love how the XB1's insignificant 1.75Ghz cpu advantage is now a thing but PS4's much larger GPU advantage always got brushed off as not that much of a difference. If it was thought the PS4's specs wouldn't amount to too much in real world performance, what in the hell do you think 1.75Ghz is going to do???????????????

Gotta love PR. Started unilaterally by Ubisoft.

Barely anyone mentioned the cpu advantage at all on here until UNITY came along and it was only mentioned then as a POSSIBLE reason for the better framerate.

FWIW You will see that in the immediate vicinity, the foliage is quite dense, but that draw radius is quite small, and it's very noticeable where the foilage draws in.

That's similar to what I see when I'm driving through the hills on the PS4 version. The foliage on the ground is constantly drawing-in right in front of me. I just chalk it up to an old engine being made to run on a new console. I don't expect their new games built for the new consoles will do that.

You are right, thanks. Default level is just completely wrong. Messed a bit with my TV and lowered game brightness, looks perfect now.

It looked a little washed out on the XB1 version as well. Maybe the default gamma setting actually is incorrect?

Maybe he forgot to the quote the poster? I also haven't seen much talk of CPU in this thread.

That nails it, gonna get this for the PS4. All my friends have a PS4 and I prefer the DS4. I also prefer a little less "pop".

who am I kidding, I don't have any friends, or an xbox one, on the plus side amazon delivered.

Thats the X1 version right?, it looks pretty dense actually seeing that. The PS4 version must look dense as hell.
It reminds me a bit of Oblivion actually with the way it draws in, in the distance.

Correct, xbox one, doesn't look quite as nice as the PS4, granted, but it's still very nice none the less

You are entirely missing the point.

Of course the GPU in the PS4 is much more powerful then the GPU in the Xbox One, it's architecture leaner, it's memory faster. But the crappy CPU in the Xbox One is clocked marginally faster then the crappy CPU in the PS4. A win is a win god damn it.

Which console did you finally decide on? Weren't you the one having trouble deciding?

I feel your pain. I'm at the limit of what a razor can do here.

lol, i'm not quite that far yet but i do like shaving my head (with a clipper and no blade, not a full shave with a razor) so when it gets to bad, i'll just keep shaving it off and look like a tough meathead.

It doesn't help that they have really dense areas and then parts with no grass. They probably should of spaced it out a bit more.

This is what grass looks like in Los Angeles. That's where GTA5 is based. It can be quite barren in places so the Xbox One version is more accurate. Props to the developers for going the extra mile.

Ugh. Looks rough on x1 and you can really see the judder in the video conparison.

I want the game on PC,hopefully my rig will be able to run it on par with the PS4 version and not the xbox one.

It's not a win when it doesn't really amount to anything. People are using it as a arguing point now is what i'm getting at.

So the X1 version is actually more realistic then, cool.

When I get one I'm getting a PS4. No way I'm getting a MS designed gimped Xbox One. But I'm still an Xbox fanboy. I know. I'm confused.

I'm now rooting for the underdog.

The PS4 is too powerful to handle realistic L.A grass.

Oh good, then, I'm not concerned. Looks like PS4 is more dense and looks better for grass/foliage overall, but that one earlier screenshot made the X1 look barely better than last gen in terms of foliage... Your movies make it look much better, though probably not as good as PS4.

I live on my own so i would probably go for the PS4 version due to more grass (god that sounds silly to write lol) but i think choosing which version to buy because of which controller they like or which version their friends will be playing, is a lot better reason than the 100 page threads we get on here for every tiny difference XB1/PS4 games have.

People just need to get over the fact that some people find other things more important than just graphics or pixels so stop bringing console warz shite into it. Some people find other things more important.

The thing is, Digital foundry threads aren't for "friends, controller" bullshit.

Foliage looks much better on PS4 version.

What. I expected way denser traffic and more pedestrians. I guess I'll have to wait for the PC release to manually crank that up. Still doesn't feel like city.

We know about the foliage thing, but can anyone with both versions comment on framerate or judder differences? I don't expect anything scientific just general impressions. I have to decide what version to get in the next few minutes.

I can't detect any frame rate dips or judder on the xbox one version.

We've completed work on an initial performance analysis of the PlayStation 4 version of Grand Theft Auto 5, which you can find embedded below. At first blush, we're looking at a very similar release to the Xbox One version - with only one really noticeable difference, the implementation of a lens flare effect that appears either absent or dialled back on Xbox One. Frame-rate is confirmed at 30fps, though the rare dropped frames seen on Xbox One are even less of an issue here. We're working through the game as quickly as we can and our journeys are taking us out of the city, so yes, we're definitely looking into stuff like this and will report back when we have more to share.

My playstation account is not currently linked with my origin account. Is there a way to do that from work so I can do the keep before I go home and play tonight?

You don't get the thing right.

Grass on PS4 is prebaked. Grass on Xbox is achieved by a complex garden simulation process that takes advantage of superior CPU performance.

Just wait a month, preferably rainy, and make the comparison then.

I'd ask my friends which controller they prefer.....

I jest.

Judging by the DF brief analysis of the PS4 in comparison to the xbox one (and grassgate) it looks as if it will win the "better version" by a nose at the moment.

Just got home and about to boot up the PS4 version, so can't really give an honest opinion of it yet.
