Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

I think it's around medium or high preset on the PS4/X1... But I don't have the console version so I can't verify it. Just going from what I see in videos.

So I was finally able to get some quality time with the game, and man...those cutscenes...has anyone found any solution for the massive stuttering on the cutscenes?

I added the command line parameters to unlock the framerate on them, could that be causing it?

probably, although for me it works (almost) perfectly. still a little jittery sometimes, nothing major, definately better than the 30 ones

Performance is definitely weird. Sometimes I lower a setting and the framerate gets worse. I think I'm going to wait for a patch.

Maxed with 2x MSAA 26FPS avg.
GeForce 660 2GB - Latest (11/18/2014) Drivers
8GB RAM
i7-3770 @3.5GHz (stock).

Plays just fine for me in the intro though. Winging it for now.

Everything ultra/highest except MSAA ; 60fps lock
Everything ultra/highest plus MSAA ; 55fps average, 43 FPS minimum

Which route should I go?

60fps lock. The post process AA is pretty damn good in this game.

I'd rather have a smoother experience than annoying fps dips.

Looking for pc setting suggestions, haven't downloaded the newest AMD drivers yet.

i5-4670k (not OC'd, fans need to be replaced), Radeon HD 7950 stock as well. Right now I have it on ultra and it goes between 40-60, I want 50-60. What kind of things impact performance the most in this game? Really want to keep the highest textures and 1920x1080, everything else is not as important.

Came in here about this, glad it's not just me. Game itself runs pretty well though, so no big deal.

I've run my system through the http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/ site and pass when it comes to the mins. Here is my current system, planning on upgrading soon though..

AMD Phenom II X4 924 2.8Ghz
Windows 7 64bit
8GM Ram
Geforce GTX 560 1GB
Resolution I run is 1440 x 900

Given what I have at the moment and the latest game I was able to run pretty much on Medium/and some high was BF4 and even Hardline beta without much issue, how should I be with Dragon Age?

Any idea of what settings I might be able to get away with?

I'm close to just getting the PC version now and then upgrading in a few weeks but don't want to bother if I won't be able to run it at all.

Thanks.

How's Denuvo holding up? This looks like the first 'big' game to use it, interested to see if it's still not cracked.
Crack not out as of now.

But since it stopped filthy pirates from spamming misleading performance 'reviews' before game launch, that's already a win.

You'll be able to run it.

If I had to guess, I would say.. use medium settings with some low sprinkled (No AA, turn down shadows and lighting) throughout for a stable frame rate.

Wow, the performance gain from turning off MSAA is ridiculous.

Doesn't even look that much different going from 2xMSAA to off.

I turned on MFAA in the nvidia control panel but the image quality doesn't look any different from AA being totally off. Does it not actually work for this game yet? I didn't see anything about MFAA in the nvidia experience, in fact, nvidia experience gave me an error when trying to load optimized settings :/

Also I noticed in the cut scenes looking at MSI afterburner, my GPU usage is down in the mid 40's % even so far as to down into the single digit usage so I'm not surprised that the frame rate is tanking.

Any idea why this could be happening? The GPU usage when actually playing is 80% or higher and locked @ 60fps otherwise.

yup, I went from 4x to 2x in hinterlands to keep it at 60 (otherwise it would be in the 40s) and the game looks the fucking same, maybe im blind

Cutscenes cap framerate to 30, unless you add some command-lines to force 60+.

Hey, guys, BioWare is monitoring this thread to find issues. So I suggest being as detailed as possible so we can help them fix them as quickly as possible. I'll start:

Unstable fps (between 45-60) on both Mantle and DirectX 11 with no significant changes. Tried different settings. including a mix between Medium, High and Ultra but no luck. Lots of stuttering when turning the camera included. Cutscenes even more unstable (getting to 22 fps). Benchmark isn't accurate and the sound of it is all over the place. Voices as soon as the game start are duplicated. Gender bug (created a male human noble, imported choices from Keep and people refer to my character as a woman). Finally, sometimes the game is closed but the icon is still on my taskbar.

Windows 8.1 64-bit
Installed on a 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD
GPU: AMD 7970 3 GB (latest beta drivers installed)
CPU: i7 2600k @ 4.5 GHz
16 GB of RAM
1080p

Saw this on reddit about the Denuvo protection:

"Wanna know average number of times parts of exe code are fcked around between RAM and HDD in the span of one hour? 150000 copy/write iterations. That's about 10000 times more than usual. DRM constantly decrypts the game code into the memory and encrypts it back. This is the most bull**** usage of encryption software I've ever stumbled upon. And even though code chunks are quite small (couple of kilobytes per go at worst), they are all stored in one memory block. And playing the game for 4-8 hours(depends on SSD quality) means that you can say goodbye to that block." Source:http://www.rpgcodex.....5#post-3599880[1]
So check your install folder for Origin games. You might want to switch over to your hard disk drive with spinning iron plates instead of sacrificing the life of your solid state drive too early. Denuvo is also used by "Lords of the Fallen" and FIFA 15 so far. I think a lot of games will follow.

Already had this discussion a few pages back and it was proven to be false for DA.

EDIT: I just read the thread further from where this rumour originated from. Apparently it came from a forum dedicated to cracking DRM.
I bet what they did was write a log file for every encrypt and decrypt the game did in RAM to their hard drive in their attempt to crack it and caused their HDD to go ballistic.

Using the tactical combat view is almost like having a photo mode lol. Love how you can move in the 3D space and advance time slowly. You get a good look at the impressive effects happening throughout the battle.

Loving the combat. Very impressive. My 2H warriors grapple ability where they throw a line and pull in enemies is my favorite my by far. Especially with the kick added in with the extra point thrown in.

Fun stuff

When you change your viewing angle in normal mode it works great. Try to do it in Tactical mode and it super zooms in making it incredibly annoying to use.

Are these graphs legit?

So far the smoothest way to play for me whilst at the same time minimizing cutscene judder:

Rock solid 60 FPS AMD rig:

  • Use Mantle
  • Startup: -GameTime.ForceSimRate 60+ -GameTime.MaxSimFps 60 -RenderDevice.RenderAheadLimit 2
  • Fullscreen
  • Enable in-game VSYNC
  • Disable in-game Mouse Smoothing

30 FPS AMD/Nvidia laptop:

  • Use DX11
  • Radeonpro Double VSYNC on (Nvidia use Adaptive Half Refresh)
  • Startup: -GameTime.ForceSimRate 30+ -GameTime.MaxSimFps 30
  • Fullscreen
  • Disable in-game VSYNC
  • Disable in-game Mouse Smoothing

Issues still in place:

- Cutscene judder is still there, some cutscenes are worse than others. (Example first boss encounter is pretty smooth compared to the intro scenes)
- Lack of tripple buffering for Mantle means any cpu spike results in a noticeable judder. The default Render Ahead Limit (Flip Qeue Size) of "-1" should be set to "2" for the Mantle rendering engine, not only does this reduce the amount of judder but it also results in a sizeable increase in framerate.
- Alt tabbing from fullscreen Mantle removes the taskbar for dragon age and goes into windowed mode.

I still don't have the option for Mantle. I have a 7950 with Catalyst 14.9. I've tried a re-install of drivers, including a total clean out; but the option is still greyed out. Any ideas as to what I could be missing?

Vegetation Quality High
Water Quality Medium

It's running pretty well. Constant 60FPS with minor stutters during exploration, but closing Afterburner and Rivatuner seems to have fixed that. I'm now at a boss battle during the prologue and while it's a bit stuttery, it's nothing too extreme. However, the thing that's beginning to get frustrating is that the game keeps freezing at this point.
@ the Temple of Sacred Ashes
I've played that battle like three-four times already and never got to finish it. :(
It's a fun boss battle, but it's not that fun.

I don't have a lot of PC knowledge, still kinda new to the scene, so figuring out how (and if possible) to fix this has been a real pain. I'll try doing a clean videodriver re-install next.
If anyone has any other idea's, i'm all ears. :p

For me, it seemed to work with the 14.11 betas (#2 seems the recommended version for DAI).

[after install, reboot, go into the catalyst control center -> information->software and double-check that the 'catalyst version' is what you expect it to be]

Have you turned off the Origin in-game overlay? That has helped the stuttering for a lot of people.

That freezing isn't supposed to happen at all.
Check the game cache in Origin and see if the data is validated properly

mantle still stutters like mad for me, with absolutely awful loading times. Can anyone who's seen an improvement with mantle please check your Mantle driver version and API version in CCC's info tab.

could someone post the proper, confirmed launch options to get the cutscenes at 60 in a quote please?
I seem to find 2-3 different ways of writing them
