The Verge - Best handheld gaming system

They evaluate the Vita, 3DS, ipad mini and Nexus 9.

The result is:
Vita
, with a side of
3DS

For reasons:
analog buttons (they mean dual analogs and face buttons), what the future of mobile should be, variety on PSN, cross buy, indie ports, remote play etc
.

"Sony doesn't show it the love it deserves, but that doesn't mean we can"

Personal opinion - I agree on all points. The library is good for me, and the tactile experience of playing the system is the best. The integration features are also nice.

As an owner of all 4 platforms, I find myself spending the most time on the system they picked. And second most on their #2. The 2nd often has better games, but they're a lot more scarce.

In terms of hardware, definitely. In terms of games, i guess it depends on the taste, but i think the 3DS has more great games at the moment, and Vita's future seems bleak.

Totally agreed. Hardware is head and shoulders above. Game library is highly debatable, but I spend more time on the Vita and own more games. Having both is good though.

is the vita the best gaming hardware? eh probably. Its definetly not the best handheld gaming machine to own right now though.

hint. its 3ds.

I say that the 3DS has the better games, but Vita has some cooler features, better hardware and better graphics. Not to say the Vita doesn't have good games, it has great games.

Nope Verge. I'll rather take a library of fantastic exclusive titles over what we all know.

Honestly, at this point I don't care about exclusives at all. I just want the best experience on the go with a large library and variety. The vita hits all points.

Vita and 3DS are both #1 in my heart. Hardware differences be darned, the gaming experience on both are unique to me.

Vita has analog buttons? I didn't know that. I don't really understand why that's even worth listing as a reason it's the best, though. How many games actually use the analog buttons?

I have no opinions on smartphones or tablets, but I do prefer the Vita over the 3DS. They both have great exclusives, so it comes down to the actual hardware and functionality and the Vita has that over the 3DS hands down. They're both awesome, though.

Eh. 3DS plays all the games available on the best handheld of all time (DS), has a great library of its own original games, and a lot of classic past handheld games (GB, GBC, etc.)

Vita has potential, but it's not exactly delivering on its promises.

Vita is definitely a great little system - it's sad that the poor thing is basically dead. Remote play is a killer feature that is almost perfect (they just need to let you re-map buttons, cause some games that rely heavily on R2/L2 are murdered by the back touch usage).

My 3DS was used for OOT3D and has been collecting dust since - it will only get used again with Majoras 3D and then probably back to the bin.

Vita is the only platform I've sold as an adult before its "must haves" were ported to other platforms. Horrible waste of a thing.

I'm sitting here playing my Vita right now, and I have to disagree. Is it the system with the most wasted potential? Hell yes. But in order to be the best, you need games, and unfortunately the Vita is lacking in that regard.

Don't get me wrong the Vita has some great games, it just doesn't have the a library with the depth of the 3DS.

Vita is an excellent and versatile little handheld.
Personally, rivals the PSP as best ever.
Software selection fits well with my tastes...take from that what you will...

It didn't get enough support, but as a piece of hardware with potential id have to agree with Vita. I've never used a dedicated portable device with do much promise and capability from playing games on the go.

It has the best screen and by far the best and most varied control options. Such a shame it just didnt get the software support it deserved.

Still great for smaller titles at least.

Vita is a significantly better piece of tech than the 3DS
Library-wise it's subjective, but just judging the actual systems isn't even close.

Anything to give Vita a boost. I fully disagree with it, but if this gets more people to buy a Vita, then that's good for a chance to get more exclusive games on that platform.

I'd agree if Sony knew the vita existed. There just isn't any compelling software on it for me that isn't being ported to the PS4/PS3 (looking at tearaway).

I definitely agree, the Vita is a fantastic piece of hardware. Library is whatever, I really like the stuff that's on it even if it mostly isn't exclusive. 3DS is definitely the place to be for exclusives though. I picked up my 3DS pretty much entirely for the handful of really awesome exclusives on it (Zelda, Layton vs Wright, Mario, Fire Emblem, etc) but as a fan of replayable indie games and the PSOne's catalogue, the Vita has never really stopped being my main portable system.

But the hardware isn't even a close race though, 3DS is just straight up uncomfortable to use in all its iterations.

I like both systems, the 3DS has some great exclusives and it's primarily a MegaTen machine for me, but I love my Vita a lot more. I've bought 2 since launch and it's been a great ride. Sony really dropped the ball on the device but the library the Vita has the moment is one of a kind, despite having a ton of ports haha

What are you talking about?

Yeah, I agree. I really like some of the things the Vita does, but you can't beat that library.
