Drawn to Death #GOF**KYOURSELF (David Jaffe's response to giantbomb/polygon comments)

Dave himself is saying it's all in good fun. Seems like he has a level head while making sure he has a good time addressing his usual critics.

Calling All Cars was a good game.

The games trailer was actually worse than this video. I think the game is just way too early to show. It looked kinda rough and people reacted to that. It's not their fault. Also, it also probably shouldn't have been the closer. Yes, it's great that there's a new Jaffe game but it looked rough.

He described on stage as taking place inside a teenagers notebook and bring brutally violent. It's pretty obvious it's problematic to anyone with an ounce of social awareness.
As someone who was a teen in the 90's I think it's actually a pretty accurate depiction of the type of stuff you would find in many of my friends' notebooks. Maybe things have changed a lot post Columbine.

If only my penis was as big as my GamerScore!
I enjoyed this, good for him. Fits into the whole vibe of his game, and Is actually smart promotion.

why do people think jaffe is relevant these days? what was the last good game he did?

GoW? because Calling all cars was a junk PSN title, the newest Twisted Metal was a junk should-have-been-PSN game that was overpriced and shallow... he really has done fuck all for the last 2 generations of gaming.

Twisted Metal is shallow? That game gives players more options off-spawn than almost any other game out there...

Some people liked Twisted Metal I guess

Jaffe hasn't made anything relevant to the mass market in about 7 years so if this kind of stuff can put a bit of a spotlight on his new game then you cant really blame him.

As for the game itself it looks like the type of game that is going to be on PS+ from day one in order to have any chance at an active long term community.

its not nearly as good as black... and at the price they released it at i was fucking pissed. felt like a 10$ PSN game to me.

I haven't played Black to compare, but the skill curve in Twisted Metal PS3 felt much steeper than the vast majority of other MP shooters I've played throughout the gen. Every match I felt like I could learn something new.

Ugh, there's nothing more that I hate than a person who just curses just to curse, as if it's some involuntary action they can't control...Like turrets syndrome or something. This was excessive and nothing I want to put my money behind anyways.

I like all his games pretty much. Even calling all cars was really fun

Some people just need to hit back... and I can understand that. Though I think it isn't as professional as "taking it in your stride".
But in this instance, that was pretty good Jaffe. A classy(ish) way of handling hitting back at criticism...
and a creative way of marketing your game!

Can I ask why? I don't know about your teenage experience, but I know mine and most of the ones around me was absolutely filled with violent imagery. On notebooks, folders, drawn on our arms, everywhere. The rebellious teenage years are a staple as old as time. It's not at all a recent development, so why is acknowledging it in a video game problematic?

This experience being so common betrays a problem in the culture. It should be corrected, not reflected on nostalgically to make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Personally, no I was not like that myself. The guys I knew that were, were in large fucking creeps, to be blunt. I thought as much then as I do now.

Lmao.

The game looks interesting but I would rather have a proper Twisted Metal

Those characters look like something I could have doodled in 12th grade math class

Are you fucking kidding me?

My god. What are you even saying, man.
Are you looking for controversy in the concept of this game?

And now you are saying everyone who doodled like this were fucking creeps? Great judgement call. Go watch Indie Game: The Movie.

Oh right. Social awareness.

If you want to be socially aware, maybe you shouldn't label large groups of people as being fucking creeps, just because you can't identify with them.

Good on Jaffe. Was actually pretty funny.

Game looks interesting imo and I'm actually slightly excited about the small player count as I normally bitch about my team in team based shooters. Will allow me to put up or shut up.

The idea of it being a cultural thing kind of goes out the window when you hear about the same trends going on hundreds of years ago and in many different cultures. It's not really a cultural thing, it's a human thing. And while growing up surrounded by creeps sucks, it isn't universal, unless you think I'm a fucking creep. And the guy above me talking about his experience and his friends are fucking creeps.

Like I said, it's not new, and it really isn't nostalgic. It's one of those wink and nods, man weren't we insufferable sort of acknowledgements. Really doubt many people look back and think "Man, I wish I could go back to being a pain in the ass."

woah David Jaffe be careful you don't cut yourself with that edge.

Game looks mechanically bland and stylistically repellent.

It looks way better in person, trust me. The trailer really put me off of the art style when I watched it from the keynote, but I 180'd pretty much instantly after seeing it running on a live display at 60fps. The contrast between environments (white) and player-relevant objects such as pick ups and enemies (colored) is genius and a real boon for readability.

I think the video, whilst being overly long, is just silly fun and cute. It's not really David Jaffe's response, it's supposed to be from the POV of the character.

Jaffe gave us Twisted Metal and God of War. What did Trollygon and Shittybomb give us? - So called gaming journalism. #gofuckyourselves #teamjaffe

Honestly. It doesn't matter if you have the most well thought out criticism and politely lay out a constructive breakdown of why his recent work has not been up to par...

The answer he will always give regardless is #GoFuckYourself #ElitestPricks. Then he will find new fans that will kiss his butt and ditch the old ones that supported him for a decade.

Criticism of his last game was not out of hate or disgust with him, it was all to help improve the game, since so much in the new TM was noobified and gutted.

People will find a way to be offended by anything nowadays. If your not offending anyone at this point then your doing something wrong. Game looks creative and fun.

Game plays amazing with four players. Very tight and intimate with a smooth game flow. I played a bunch at PSX and wrote detailed impressions here. It's a game people really need to try before judging it, if only because it's so damn different. I had a blast and barely scratched the surface of the mechanics.
Nice write up. Not big on shooters, but I am a fan of Twisted Metal. I'll definitely keep an eye on this game.

I'm not digging the game the art or playstyle but #gofuckyourself? Really?
So much consistency, in both the presentation of the game and your response to it. :)

Plus, it fits the tone of the game (if I'm not mistaken, the game itself says FUCK YOU when you kill/get killed)
In Llamatron, if you entered "fuck" anywhere in your name when you got a high score, it would unlock the entire death sample, which was a distorted voice saying, "AWWwwww… FUCK!!" :D

Showing the game last was a real mistake. I thought the game looked laughably terrible in the ways that all David Jaffe games do, in that the gameplay itself looked fine but everything else about it was a complete turnoff. But I just think most people who aren't interested would have ignored it if it came in the middle of the presentation. Even if the artstyle and everything that is Jaffe didn't make me check out at the start, I can't imagine any way that showing this game at the end of the show made sense. It seems early and real niche.

Game looks fucking great. I'll be getting it day one.

But from an artists perspective I can understand the frustration, but at the same time it's better to ignore it. heh..

didn't see the conference, so i actually hadn't seen the game before

eh, it has an original look. I'll check it out for a bit. As for the response... I mean... it's Jaffe, I don't really know what else to expect.
