PS4's Automatic RGB setting is unreliable, so double check your TV / PS4

I just took some screenshots using the share button, first one Full RGB, second one Limited RGB. i see no difference, does the PS4 capture at some default image setting that isnt effected by the PS4's RGB settings ?

Full

Limited

Thats alright. If your tv supports both the picture will look almost the same. Only if your TV doesnt support it you get black crush or a greyish picture.

Everything is alright.

I have a Panasonic P50ST50 plasma, and I can only find the following settings under Picture > HDMI Settings > HDMI/DVI RGB Range:

Auto
Standard (16-235)
Nonstandard

I'm assuming the 'Standard' setting is limited, but any idea why there is not a Full option? Is 'Nonstandard' supposed to be Full?

I have samsung un55b7000wf led tv. I've tried googling to see what rgb range it has and can't find anything. Does anyone else have this tv?

When I first bought my PS4, my plasma was send to standard (16-255) which made AC4 dark as night in places. Switched it to non-standard (0-255) and manually made the PS4 full and great results. Then only thing I missed was the water and tree colours being slightly more vibrant, but they were way too dark, likely not as intended.

This OP will definitely help others. I had to figure mine out with trial and error changing settings on the console and TV.

Now, why does DRIVECLUB seem so dim and drab? Even if high sun times, the game feels too dark. In the character select menu, I can barely see the character faces at times. Every other game seems perfect.

On my Panasonic plasma, Standard is 16-235 (limited) and Nonstandard is 0-255 (full).

You are better off leaving it at Auto or Standard, and leaving the PS4 on Auto or Limited.

If you want you can set the TV to Nonstandard and the PS4 to Full. Should be the same.

Black level options in my Samsung are "normal" and "low", but no "high" option like mentioned in the op for Full RGB ?

Picture>Picture Options>Black Level

On my Samsung (EU40F6400), when i go to Picture>Picture Options>Black Level, theres "Normal" and "Low" options. (i've posted test pictures above of both Full RGB and Limited from PS4 settings)

When i put PS4 to Full RGB and TV to Normal black levels, its the same as having the PS4 on Limited RGB and TV on Low black levels. Which one should i leave it on ?

So it does support rgb full?
Most likely, if the TV is a modern one (like less than 5 years old)

Normal (Full): 0-255
Low (Limited): 16-235

The terms are confusing with Samsung TVs. Once the black levels are matched, the difference is negligible unless there's a side-by-side comparison probably.

Leave it on the one you like most. I personally have mine on Normal (TV) and Full (PS4).

Same options as on the ST60. Auto pretty much never works right for mine, not sure about the ST50. Nonstandard is indeed 0-255 Full. Putting both your PS4 and TV at Full/Nonstandard is perfectly fine and so is both at Limited/Standard. Just make sure they match up.

I use Nonstandard for my Receiver which is on HDMI 2 (ARC) which has my PC, PS3, PS4, and PSTV hooked up to it and all set at Full. Auto doesn't work at all and my PC only outputs at Full over HDMI to my TV so I don't really have a choice.

WiiU is hooked up to HDMI 1 at Standard since it only outputs at Limited.

Cheers for clearing that up for me. ill be going with Normal on TV and Full on PS4 then.

Huh, I never thought to actually check if mine was working correctly - it wasn't. Auto on the PS4 was outputting full to my Samsung monitor and the monitor had that HDMI input tagged as limited or low.

I remembered I had intentionally set it to low because all my consoles filter in there and I believe the WiiU can only output limited. Easiest to just keep everything that way.

No wonder some caves in Destiny were so dark.

answer depends on your tv. what do you have it set to? if its set to auto what you are seeing is good because it means that your tv is able to select the correct rgb setting to match the device its talking with.

if you want to see the difference you need to set your tv and ps4 to use different settings. one way will crush blacks (picture will become much darker especially in black areas) or the flip flop will be a washed out image

I know a bunch of people use relievers as well. Should we be making an adjustment on those as well of they're the main hdmi source that everything is plugged into?

I finally figured out what has been causing the crushed blacks on my set. It was that dang Dynamic Contrast setting turned on (had it on medium) and not RGB Full. That setting should be abolished. It's such a deceptive setting.

Things look really bright and vivid at first, but then after a while you start noticing little things like trees, etc have blackish look to them. It looks very unnatural. And if you try to fix it by turning up the brightness, things will become washed out. I mean I know when you calibrate a tv it's recommended to turn off Dynamic Contrast, but I thought it would be fine for games. Nope, it isn't (at least on my set).

Dynamic Contrast setting turned on = the devil.

All that preset stuff is garbage. Motion blur, Dynamic Contrast, Auto Sharpener, turn it all off IMO.

Yep. I did have Auto Motion Plus turned on, but I switched it back to off yesterday. I've been back and forth with it the last few months, but it's staying off for good now. I'm not gonna lie though, some of the games looked good with it on.

Another thing I've noticed with Dynamic Contrast set to off is that I don't have much picture noise anymore. Now having read up more on what Dynamic Contrast does, it does in fact cause picture noise. So that little problem (that has be annoying me since I got this tv a few months ago) is now solved as well :)

Yeah. It seems the ps4 can't detect the rgb ranges for computer monitors. Maybe it's not an issue for hdtvs but for monitors it's a problem.

And yes, always turn off extra bullshit tv's have. Dynamic contrast off. Any additive 'feature' should be turned off ,like motion blur. You want an honest to goodness picture that is dictated by color, brightness and contrast. All that other marketing crap tv's have should be disabled.

EDIT:I am the BIGGEST IDIOTE EVER: The Full solution was working fine. The problem was um, I had brightness down to 40 ¬_¬ Bumped it to 51 and I could see *all* the squares. :D
Thanks LHK, Sir.

Something isn't right with my set-up.

No matter which combination of limited+limited or full+full I use, I never see the top set of squares in the image in the opening post. I originally put this down to my TV (which is quite new if not the very latest model) not being able to handle full RGB but then why would it have that option in its settings? The only way I can get all the squares to appear is if I use the option which causes the colours to look washed out.
My TV doesn't label the setting as RGB instead it's called Dynamic Range and has the Full, Limited and Auto settings within it.

This is my TV: http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/KDL-42W828B

This is its full spec sheet (I have the 42" version): http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/televisions/w800b-series/specifications

Thank you in advance for any help. Oh and, firmware is fully up-to-date as of a few minutes ago.

You won't see a difference by taking screens "internally" because changing the rgb range applies to the output. You'd only see a difference by looking at your TV or by taking a capture with a card plugged in the HDMI out.

The RGB range doesn't change the fact that the game is rendered with a full RGB range. The change in range is applied after that.

This wasn't fixed with 2.0? Come on Sony.

Nothing needed to be fixed. There was nothing wrong with it in the first place (thread title is wrong). It's just that some TVs don't communicate properly with the PS4 if things are left in "auto" mode.

Oh ok. Cool.

Thread title needs some serious fixing though.

Do you use the Game profile in Scene select? Leaving the PS4 on auto should work just fine with this TV combination.

i have the 55inch version and it supports Full RGB as well as full Chroma 4:4:4 resolution in Graphics and Game Scene mode. And you can also use Motionflow set to Impulse to completely get rid of any motionblur with this tv.

You can find out more here:

Thank you for the tip but the mistake was mine. I had the TV and PS4 set to Full but because brightness was at a 40 it wasn't showing the top row of squares. I've bumped brightness to 52 and all is well with the world again. ;>

I would like to update this thread and further affirm that PS4's auto RGB settings are shit. And it doesn't automatically detect anything properly.

I purchased a new gaming monitor, a 27 inch LG. Black level is set to high. The PS4's RGB settings are set to auto, yet it's assuming limited. So I had to manually change the PS4's RGB range to Full for it to work properly.

So, I've noticed then, by checking out many monitors.

If you are using a PC monitor to game on your PS4 or Xbox One, 99 times out of a 100, PC monitors have RGB range FULL. So set your PS4 to RGB FULL.

I doubt such a recent TV doesn't have a setting for the RGB range. Just check the settings menus.

Any idea about older models from 2009, like Bravia 40W5500? The settings are in Finnish, and I can't find the equivalent of "full RPG" there. I've tried to set it according to several of those calibration images, and I can see the squares I'm supposed to though.

Change the settings to english? :p
From a quick look at the user manual there doesn't seem to be an option for RGB range. So just leave your PS4 to limited.

I tried that once, but couldn't find it that way either. Dunno if it just isn't there, or is named differently. What puzzles me though is that when I set the console on full RPG, and adjust the TV's settings, the full RPG calibration images show as they should.

I have an older Samsung monitor, and the only setting related to this I found was under Picture > HDMI Black Level > Low (or Normal)

I have it set to Low because its too bright when on Normal, so is this related to the RGB setting?

Should I leave it on Low and change it to Limited on the PS4 or put it on FULL?

Does anyone know why the raiden mission in ground zeroes is so dark at times?

That mission's lighting behaves differently than the others.
I noticed the same issue, think it is the lack of environmental effects ie: rain?

Forgot where I read it but someone had the idea of making a blu-ray of the AVSHD disc and just playing that on your PS4.

So obvious, why didn't I think of that ^_^

Yup the automatic setting has been like this forever.

Here's a easy way to check if your TV supports full and if your setting on the PS4 is correct.

View the below image in the PS4 browser. If your TV supports RGB full you'll be able to see the upper left most square very faintly. If it doesn't support it or if your settings are wrong, you likely won't see most of the top row. Toggle the RGB setting from limited and full and you'll see the difference in the image. If your TV doesn't support Full RGB, you just won't be able to see the top row of squares because the blacks used are blacker than the range RGB Limited can support.

fullrgb_test.jpg

On my PC and I can't see the top row of squares.

On Samsung displays Low is limited and full range is normal.
