The Witcher 3 will likely have the best graphics yet (New Screenshots)

Saw the screenshots, looked for someone to point out Unity looks better and thankfully they have.

Unity is unrivaled right now, in my opinion. I just can't get over it. I'm simply willing to say Unity wins best graphics and it is a game featuring all of Paris. A place as much as a game and it looks like this:

I gotta say, reading this thread....

My faith in humanity is slowly dying.

Don't worry guys I don't want to take your in-game prostitutes away.

I realise my first post was a little ambiguous, and I was actually commenting on the choice of dress for these fictional prostitutes, considering we have no historic information on how they dressed, and I haven't read the stories but I don't believe the writer was that obsessed with dress detail, their design is solely at the choice of the developers. With the recent commotion about how women are presented in games maybe the artists could have used artistic license not to dress them like modern representations of prostitutes, that culturally reference are modern thinking of sexualisation/objectification.

Agreed. Unity is still the king in terms of graphics, imho.
The Witcher 3 is still astounding for a huge open world game though. I believe Unity is just a tiny part of Witcher 3 in size.

they claim they are using PBR but it really doesnt look like it. materials are pretty bad

Yea doesn't look too hot.

Also, Witcher 3 has a real time day night cycle. Unity really shows off the power of prebaked lighting though.

I'm honestly not as impressed as I thought I was going to be. Unity on PC looks better and The Witcher 3 graphically looks similar to Dragon Age Inquisition :(

As much shit as Unity gets, it is a hell of a looker.

I'm really liking some of the sharp texturework seen in places in these TW3 screenies, but I can't deny there's some inconsistencies.

The Witcher 3 will

likely have the best graphics
the worst graphics
the best graphics
the worst graphics
the best graphics
the worst graphics
the best graphics

and the cycle continues

I've looked at enough games and I have seen enough trends and graphics that I can judge subsets of the rendering. Unity wins out in some areas, the witcher in others. They both have great and poor assets.

Unity on PC is hands down the current graphics king.

And what's crazy is Ubi of all people delivered the closest to advterised with that title. Like it looks damn close to the early reveals and didn't get much of a downgrade at all visually.

Unity does look stunning, but this is what smaller game in scope made with 1000 member team and prebaked lightning gets you. Witcher will be something else.

While I agree that Unity looks stunning in places, it is accompanied with horrible LODs and prebaked light. I would like to see TW3 in action but for now aesthetically, TW3 wins.

I don't know what the downsides of pre-baked lighting are, but Unity looks clearly nicer in the lighting department. Witcher 3 looks pretty flat in most of the screenshots.

And keep in mind that Unity has an incredible amount of interior, vertical, and rooftop space to roam. It's a very big game with a lot of density. It certainly is one of the most explorable, largest vehicle-free cities in gaming.

Unity is the best, especially in stills, but as soon as something open world can approach its quality without the horrendous lod and pop-in issues, I'll gladly pass on the distinction.

Witcher 3 does look good, but sadly not as huge of a leap over Witcher 2 as I'd hoped. In the earlier videos sure, but currently it's definitely not a "generational" gap. I'm hoping it looks better in motion and eagerly waiting to see the new gameplay video.

On the other hand maybe this is a good thing since apparently my 970 is now bad cause stuff and reasons, thanks internet!

Yeah, Witcher 3 lighting system seems to be really bad. I'm not sure if it's because of Red engine limitation but it's (the lighting system) really not even close to the newer games.

For open world games no.. Unity looks better. For best looking game no... Order is the best looking game ever made. So eitherways these screenshots dont look impressive.

Looks like they did something to the lighting system. The tree canopies no longer cast shadows on one another.

The lighting is a bit flat in the new images, cartoonish even. It's really noticeable on the npcs.

True, but when people were calling this game graphics kings last year I was not seeing any qualifiers. It still looks good though and I'll buy it at some point if the gameplay(combat) is improved.

I want to clarify a few things about this shots folks.

Thing is, i saw one of the earlier Witcher 3 builds in 2013 behind the closed doors at Igromir Expo in Moscow. And it clearly looked even then, with 2 crashes during the demo/ In fact it looked a hell lot better. The early material wasn't any setup or, as you would say, fake. They've just simply overpromised.

Let me explain. The demo we saw was stable 30FPS with some dips, decent drawing distance (lot better than on this pics) and with much prettier lighting model. The picture on early stages were more crisp and colorful. And i'm not even talking about textures (characters/ground) that is downgraded in current state so heavily that Witcher 2 looks on par or even better. Shadow density has been clearly downgraded. This goes for shadows drawing dictance too.

Chainmail on Geralt's armor downgraded on fresh pics to a single low-res texture is awful. And from what i see they've muted the colours in the later builds, that is a shame. Build we saw was a lot more like Inquisition in terms of colour handling.

So what happened? I think optimisations happened. Our expo build was rigged to a powerful PC with 2-way SLI with top of the line GeForces. Sadly Witcher 1 and 2 was very poorly optimised upon release and this time i think CDPR just decided to take some shortcuts. Instead of expensive work with code optimisations they've simply lowered the settings.

And yes, even by console standarts after Inquisition, Second Son or Unity this pics looks flat.

One could argue to wait for PC maxed out settings screenshots. Game looks great to me. Open world no loading times with this level of detail.

I remember when Dennis played Witcher 2. He played about an hour into it and took various pictures of the sky and floor. Then he stopped and went onto something like COD; never touching Witcher 2 again.

Pretty bummed that developers still haven't gotten hair right

At least Gerlat hair is white now :p

but yeah Gerlat and other characters hair look awful here, maybe they should just use Nvidia hairworks (or tressFx) or even something like what was used in Alice. as for developers in general, well Unity got a great looking hair also it don't move that well but look good.

I really hope we see something like new dawn demo this gen.

I'm not too impressed with the graphics tbh.
I saw Witcher 2 running at max(I think) and this doesn't look that much better.
imo

I wonder how the PSone versions will run and look. urgh

I'm ok with this as long as it plays really well and the game is an amazing experience. I enjoyed the original witcher more than the sequel on the basis that it told a better story. Hopefully Witcher 3 follows suit
