Law & Order To Air An Episode Inspired By #Gamergate February 11

Which crime show was it where the plot of the episode was these two gamer friends kidnapped a bunch of High School students and forced them to play some kind of killing game. And the reason they did it was because they got banned from their online game of choice. When ever crime shows decided to cover video games the results are always hilarious.

Has any TV series or movie NOT been hilarious in its depiction of games? It's like they're all still in that 1940's era where all drivers ridiculously rolled the steering wheel from side to side. Well really that's how movies depict computers in general. The only areas where I've seen improvement are the depictions of messaging in movies and parts where the guy googles stuff. Quinn's article about how law enforcement doesn't understand the Internet yet just further shows how "not there yet" the mainstream public use. There's still that generational divide lingering.

Anyway, at least the subject is getting out there on TV.

What's more ridiculous than the depiction of games in movies and TV is the depiction of games and gamers in real life.

Community did a good episode in season 3 (I think it was season 3).

I've found it kind of funny that the Megathread got shut down because not enough newsworthy stuff was happening but there's been more or less continuous threads on newsworthy GG stuff since. Keep digging GG, I'm sure you'll reach somewhere eventually.

I'm sure this will be awful, but at least it's going to paint GG in a bad way.

Considering the format of the shows, the GG equivalent will more than likely end up being the obvious red herring of the show, turn out to not be anywhere near as bad (ie,killing folks) and it'l be a close friend (probably female) of the victim thats responsible.

While everyone here is happy this is getting made because it will make #GG look like the fucked up individuals they are. I feel this is going to be a completely cringe worthy episode where gamers in the end are portrayed as one of them - or in a negative light.

This will make none of us look good in the end.

Yep, I could easily see everyone getting thrown under the bus instead of just the gg community.

Okay check it out: L&O episodes are half about the court case right? The high road here would be for much of the episode to center on the prosecution trying to prove the tangibility of Internet threats.

This is the kind of lack of self awareness GG thrives on

You are you, not "gamer"

Is it really even going to deal with internet threats much? It seems like SVU comes in when an employee is assaulted at a gaming convention.

Indeed. Just going to leave this (TVTropes Warning) here to give a sense of what this episode will likely end up being.

Unfortunately, gaming has been a medium under siege from the beginning, so brace for impact.

Just be glad they haven't done an episode on the anime community. Casualties will be made that day.

it's like applying the logic of Sons of Liberty to real life.
You telling me Kojima was wrong? Am I hearing this?

I understand that, but this is our primary hobby, this is a niche gaming board, we are usually what is considered the "hardcore gamer" whether we like the titles or not. We are still associated with the title, whether directly or indirectly.

Oh god, I can just imagine the fallout of that entire episode.

No we don't. You like videogames. Guess what. Literally almost everyone on the planet does. Most people on the planet are not advocating for the targeted harassment of women in gaming and tech spaces. It's remarkably simple to be part of that group. Like, to an extent, even "gamer" isn't a bad word. It's outdated and irrelevant, but, ultimately, you can just Not Associate With Gamergate In Any Way Shape Or Form. There's plenty of good reasons to do that.

unless you outwardly discussed your hobby with someone, how do they know you're a "gamer"? lmao

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
SVU is stunningly bad now. This will be hilariously cringeworthy and awesome.

If they really want to hit all the points, they need

-a Chuck C. Johnson look-alike who's a skel with bad info
-a lawyer who thinks rape and murder are cool
-a youtuber who brags about his IQ
-an MS Paint infographic with lots of red lines

"Your game is done, but you're getting a day 1 patch.... In prison"
Special guest appearance by Major Nelson.

This is actually a really interesting thought. They've had a lot of shows over the years that cover cases where real-world courts have horribly mismanaged technological advances in our society.
Cannot wait for this. We need to have a live thread.
Interesting. We'd need to talk a mod into it for official support or I wouldn't blame them for locking it on the spot. The GAF line is to avoid generic Gamergate threads to try to keep things more specific/civil and that could break down very easily. In off-topic it could work, probably? Add a special clause of the thread gets auto-locked 48 hours after the show or something to make sure it doesn't become a generic GG dumping ground thread.

what if they got adam baldwin to play himself

Ice T doesn't write the show. Maybe they wont, I'd just put my money on it. They are going for "drama" and they like as much attention as possible. That is why they constantly do their take on big cases that recently ending or are ongoing.

I can't believe he'd let the writers go too far. I have faith in the OG, Ice would never play us like that.

It's not like he'll be writing the show. SVU has had gaming episodes before and they're always hilariously bad. That image posted in this thread is actually from one of those episodes

Okay, maybe he would.

Yeah but to the everyday person, they see the episode or read some news piece, and when they meet someone and you talk about your hobbies, what's the first thing that will pop up? Oh you are like those people? Because they are not as informed as you or I, they can't make that distinction - albeit I'm sure there will be some people who can be smart enough to differentiate the two, but I feel in most cases this won't happen.

I see your point though, I still feel this will somehow potray most gamers as this fucked up group or people, whether directly or indirectly. Think about this, how much research do you think those writers actually do? After all the Gooey Visual Basic bullshit (one example amongst numerous others), I would say not much.

And after seeing this video linked by SolidSnake, it just reaffirms my thoughts.

You mention it, you discuss it, etc... I don't see your point here?
