Law & Order To Air An Episode Inspired By #Gamergate February 11

The random first person camera perspective near the end.

I'm guess that was done to illustrate that the guy saw real-life as an FPS*. I kinda dig the intention, but it was too jarring and poorly done.

*Similar to having to remind oneself to not run over pedestrians after playing a lot of GTA

Maybe you can't relate. Since the start of GG, as a woman in a prominent position on a site that constantly being brought up as an enemy of the movement, and as a target of a fair amount of harassment because of that position, I've had a lot of fears in the back of my mind, and watching this episode has given some of those fears form. It doesn't matter whether anyone has actually been a physical victim of violence. Threats cause terror on their own. There's the chance that someone will actually be crazy enough to execute something in real life, and that's terrifying. I'm sure it's a big joke to you and lots of other people, but it's not to me, and I'm not even remotely close to a primary target. I can't even begin to imagine what others are going through.
That's...actually really eye opening. I didn't even think about your position here, probably largely because I haven't seen you comment on any of this stuff to a significant degree

But then they did it with Fin, too. So were they saying he sees real life the same way?

it's not a ridiculous hour of television, if it could happen to anyone just because of their gender.

Besides, was this episode really wasn't made for us, but making people more aware of the situation.

You can downplay it all you want, but all I get out of gamer gate is entitlted gamers who think women still belong in the kitchen, and if they step out of line, these guys think they are entitlted to do whatever damage they want.

TIL that gamer gate is a terrorist organization fronted by redchanit

Well, it's not far from it. Their twitter harassment has led to swatting, a dog's death from SWAT, women leaving the industry, endless doxxing, having a board named baphomet where they can post doxxes more freely and discuss who'd they like to see dead. Baphomet, 8chan and KiA are their bases of operations and openly and freely discuss what they hate and want done to other people. Constantly organizing operation after operation to harm others.

They're scum.

EDIT: Please don't look up the baphomet board, there are some seriously messed up things there. So BIG trigger warning for all.

You know for all the cringe-worthy moments in this episode, you have to hand it to NBC for not doing the obvious twist of having the woman or her partner behind it all.

I think the worst thing they did was downplay the initial harassment at the con. The rest was so big and out there that nobody could get away with it without real consequences, but the beginning is totally believable.

A bunch of guys at a con harassing female workers and trying to shake them up when they get laughed off. That's scary and possible, and someone could easily blend in at a crowded event like that. Then they go and have her call it "leveling up".

Aka is the word for red in Japanese, while akachan is the word for baby in Japanese.

Kinda clever in a 'the vast majority of people won't understand the reference beyond #chan" way.

I think you are putting FAR more thought into it than the writers did. They just smooeshed chan sites and reddit together.

It's a mix between reddit and 8chan. I guarantee there was no Japanese reference

Well, that was genuinely shitacular. People actually watch this show voluntarily?
Its better years are behind it.

It was a significantly better show back when Christopher Meloni was on it and he was teamed up with Mariska Hargitay. She's great but ehhh, the writing just isn't there anymore.

Wow, forgot about this until about 10 minutes ago. It seems I lucked out. This show used to be good! Curse you, Stabler. Massive kudos for redchanit, both because of how stupidly obvious it is while being quite topical and relevant at the same time.

Was there actually anything to learn here or was it just a collection of "dumbest things related to gaming, ever"? There was an episode about a Second Life-type MMO some years ago that was actually decent and raised interesting societal questions, so this is a shame.

I just realized that even the Dick Wolfe name is a reference to another embarrassing episode of proto-gamergate misogynist dickery.

I haven't seen much of this show, but is this a typical example of how they handle "ripped from the headlines" scripts? Offering essentially no commentary, and escalating things as far as they can for drama? Because I'm really struggling to find a reason to call this anything other than exploitative.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
That was embarrassing, but it's par for the course of SVU episodes.
This season has had episodes tackling MRAs, Amanda Bynes' meltdown, and the Slender Man stabbing. All dealt with just as much "subtly"
In fact, that nerdy bow-tie guy was from the Slender Man episode. Fucking hell there was continuity...

Every episode literally ends with that name. Dick Wolf created the series. It's just a freaky coincidence.

No you're right. It's not just limited to SVU, it's like that for the whole franchise.

My impression is that something like this SVU episode simply goes in the opposite direction and makes the possibility harder to take seriously. It's totally sensational and ridiculous and almost everyone seems to be laughing at it. It's like "Oh, this is like all the other times those confused old guys said something on the internet going to kill me, but were totally wrong and made some memes/funny gifs in the process".

Well, it's not far from it. Their twitter harassment has led to swatting, a dog's death from SWAT,

I hadn't realized anyone or their pet was unfortunate enough to be killed in a swatting (GamerGate-related or otherwise). When was this instance?

The real insanity of swatting is that it is even possible or rather that we know it is possible (not to mention all the other mistakes, which has led to plenty of pointless deaths) and still use SWAT teams so freely.
