Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - The story behind the biggest game of the year

Sounds like everything I liked about encounter design in Far Cry and Crysis coupled with sensible expansion of existing Uncharted mechanisms.

This....I mean this is an article from Edge last month so I already read that but it has some good info on game and Visuals. Tessellated water, Sony's version of adaptive tessellation, Traversal and combat improvements, open level design with multiple choice.. but no lets get hung up on "Biggest game...Nah <insert game of choice here>.

Read the article for F*cks sake!
Seriously, we should be discussing about those instead of a subjective title that's meant to get people hyped up for the game. To me, the gameplay in the PSX demo looks very satisfying and fun. The open levels are also a welcome improvement. I'm also curious to know more about the adaptive tessellation ND is using for Uncharted 4.

Maybe you'll get a sneak peak of that at GDC. There is a programming talk by a ND programmer about the light weight job system used on PS4.

Maybe it will show examples of what they do to fill their occupancy and this one of those things.

Uncharted is the classiest franchise in gaming today. The Last of Us was a complete success and one of the best told stories in media PERIOD. To top it off it's coming on the PS4, which I have heard nothing but praise from developers.

The stars are all lined up, this game is going to fucking slay brehs.

Really? That's great! Hopefully there's also more info about AA, lighting and shading. Can't wait for GDC.

Never knew Uncharted caused so much butthurt. Time to go look at that TLOU review thread.
It will only get worse, I'm dreading the review thread.
MGSV for example will beat the shit out of it with content and sales.

I think the MGS and Uncharted franchises will hit their pinnacle this year.

Everything their doing with Uncharted is exactly what I have wanted since U3. Naughty Dog has an incredible ability to evolve their game mechanics at the perfect time.

it cant be a ND thread without the butthurt or circle jerking.

to add to the latter though...

The result is the prettiest game the new generation has yet produced. Texture resolution has been at least quadrupled across the board from Uncharted 3, but that’s just the start. Drake comes to on the shore of an island off the coast of Madagascar, waking up to a backdrop of procedurally tessellated water. A new dynamic wind system makes trees, bushes and Drake’s hair – both on his head and his chest – sway in tandem. Up close, a system that was co-developed by Naughty Dog and Sony’s Advanced Technology Group delivers a more efficient way of making highly detailed surfaces without using performance-hungry adaptive tessellation; farther away, the studio is relying far more on background LOD algorithms than it ever has before. A new physically based shader more than two years in the making helps materials to look lifelike using their real-world properties.

it's gonna be epic and thanks op for sharing, it was a good read

I am sure the demo was heavily scripted. Like the hand fight under the mini waterfall, etc..
Like in the Last of US gameplay demo where they showed very interesting scenarios but in the actual game the AI was not as interesting as in the demo.
But I hope they can make it really good.

I imagine the demo might've been scripted for the sake of the presentation, but I expect it not to be in the final game.

Btw, I don't understand why people say that the TLOU AI in the demo was that much different/better than the actual game. I finished the game twice (PS3 and PS4) and I replayed many sections multiple times (the hotel being one of them), and I remember the AI behaving quite dynamic and similar to the demo.

They did behave very similarly. We had a thread where people tried the same scene and see if it can play out like the E3 one.

What was missing is the animation of an enemy waiting next to a door to ambush you. Probably due to the severe memory constraints that they were under on PS3.

I love their current philosophy of gameplay. I know people like to mention UC and TLOU having very linear and basic gameplay, but in my opininion there is really more to it than that. ND always manages to have simple basics and make encounters special by mixing up the ways you have to apply it.

Let me elaborate a bit on that from my own experiences:

Uncharted 3 is the perfect example. The gameplay always has the same tried and true TPS mechanics, but there are many encounters that mix it up significantly by leveldesign and objects/weapons at disposal. Fighting in a burning building, the shipyard, on a boat, on the back of horses and cars, and in the desert all felt really different for example. Some of the vertical layouts helped mixing it up as well (loved the completely vertical shootout). And instead of having a cutscene or a QTE event of Drake escaping a plane in 007 style, they have you play it whilst keeping those same basic mechanics. Not to say no other dev does this to some extent, but ND really nails having fluent, constant gameplay mechanics mixed up with widely varying levels and cinematic setpiece moments. That whole shipyard section up to the sinking ship will always be one of my most favourite shootouts and really shows how dynamic those simple TPS gameplay mechanics can be.

They built on this philosophy further with TLOU and expanded it with stealth, more complex a.i. and more open levels that allow different tactics. And with UC4 they take those added mechanics to the more action orientated/over the top Uncharted series, on top of some new gameplay layers. Especially climbing seems to be quite expanded. And while it may seems like minor details to some, the way they implement the animations (freely and seemlessly) into the gameplay will allow for many new possibilities I think.

While it does not look totally insane graphically (still great though) and the fps will most likely be at 30, I feel like this game will become very impressive in the way people can interact with the environment and enemies. I really expect this to feel like that "next gen gameplay" to many.

On sidenote, another game that I expect to deliver on that genre innovating/defining front is MGS:V. Ground Zeroes was very promising. Who cares what will be "the biggest", this will be a very interesting year.

I wonder if they're going to mention "from the maker of TLoU" during U4 marketing

Offcourse they will. They made two of the most critically acclaimed (GOTG type) titles last gen and it would be insane not to mention it.

What do you think the biggest game of the year is? Sorry if you answered this already earlier in the thread. My opinion is that Halo will be the biggest game of the year because that name has a lot of weight in the industry. I, for example, am not talking about the sizes of game worlds. If the rumors about MGSV are true (and given how long it has been in development, they very well might be) it could be the biggest this year in terms of game size but I think both Uncharted and Halo have more pull today. I think we have to come to an agreement about what the word "biggest" means in this context.

MGSV.

I really think all the complaints about the differences of the AI in TLOU is heavily exaggerated. The Hunters still do very clever things like flanking, reentering an area from another path and covering their teammates. The only thing that's missing is the Hunters foraging for supplies, nothing I'll miss. I'm really wondering if the fist fight in Uncharted 4 is scripted though. It looks almost too perfect.

Yeah, the only thing I remember being different was the dude yelling "Motherfucker" and smashing Joel's face with a two-by-four. The camera shot was more cinematic in that instance as well. That's the only considerably different moment between the demo and the retail version for me.

The varied climbing, combat options and improved AI all sound great. I didn’t mind how linear the previous UC games were because the games were so good, but after playing Tomb Raider Def Edition, I think a more sandbox approach is needed for this generation.

If anyone can do it well, in Naughty Dog I trust.

I trust this will be an epic. Wonder what the controversy will be outside of 30fps complaints if they don't hit the 60 they initially promised. There will be some kind of controversy. Uncharted is now TOO open world :O!?

I may have missed it but was there any talk of UC4 supporting 3D like UC3 did? It was really well done and there has been a dearth of 3d enabled titles so I'm hoping they include it with UC4.

Anyone know?"

I'm glad they're revamping the climbing segments. They became a real chore by Uncharted 3 to the point it became self-parody. Just adding a layer of unpredictability should help replays.

When Straley and Druckmann took over the first thing they did was have the level size reduced from what they were when it was under the previous directors.

I post too much to be able to find my own posts from June/July 2013. Maybe someone else can remember the title.

I'm expecting something like "Gunplay feels the same!" or worse, "Uncharted 4 was downgraded so much it looks nothing like the E3 demo!"

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
How many copies of the Batman Arkham or Witcher series have been sold on current gen? That is no excuse. It could have been current-gen only.

Konami doesn't have many good IP's that sell well left. Metal Gear is one of their biggest flagships so of course they want to get as much out of it as possible. It's not like a new MGS game comes out every 2 or 3 years.

The last console MGS game (MGS4) came out in 2008.

Stereoscopic 3D gaming is dead. (until VR)
