I love their current philosophy of gameplay. I know people like to mention UC and TLOU having very linear and basic gameplay, but in my opininion there is really more to it than that. ND always manages to have simple basics and make encounters special by mixing up the ways you have to apply it.
Let me elaborate a bit on that from my own experiences:
Uncharted 3 is the perfect example. The gameplay always has the same tried and true TPS mechanics, but there are many encounters that mix it up significantly by leveldesign and objects/weapons at disposal. Fighting in a burning building, the shipyard, on a boat, on the back of horses and cars, and in the desert all felt really different for example. Some of the vertical layouts helped mixing it up as well (loved the completely vertical shootout). And instead of having a cutscene or a QTE event of Drake escaping a plane in 007 style, they have you play it whilst keeping those same basic mechanics. Not to say no other dev does this to some extent, but ND really nails having fluent, constant gameplay mechanics mixed up with widely varying levels and cinematic setpiece moments. That whole shipyard section up to the sinking ship will always be one of my most favourite shootouts and really shows how dynamic those simple TPS gameplay mechanics can be.
They built on this philosophy further with TLOU and expanded it with stealth, more complex a.i. and more open levels that allow different tactics. And with UC4 they take those added mechanics to the more action orientated/over the top Uncharted series, on top of some new gameplay layers. Especially climbing seems to be quite expanded. And while it may seems like minor details to some, the way they implement the animations (freely and seemlessly) into the gameplay will allow for many new possibilities I think.
While it does not look totally insane graphically (still great though) and the fps will most likely be at 30, I feel like this game will become very impressive in the way people can interact with the environment and enemies. I really expect this to feel like that "next gen gameplay" to many.
On sidenote, another game that I expect to deliver on that genre innovating/defining front is MGS:V. Ground Zeroes was very promising. Who cares what will be "the biggest", this will be a very interesting year.
I wonder if they're going to mention "from the maker of TLoU" during U4 marketing
Offcourse they will. They made two of the most critically acclaimed (GOTG type) titles last gen and it would be insane not to mention it.
