Tearaway Unfolded (PS4) shipping this summer

After hearing the endless good word of mouth right here on Gaf, I decided to give it a purchase.

I'm about four hours in and I'm pretty bored. The story isn't very interesting and none of the game mechanics so far are very challenging. I still die, but not because I'm not good, but because it doesn't matter, I have no lives and I get to start right where I died. The game is basically an experience, so you either like the aesthetic or you don't. Its a pretty game, but there's about all there is to it. It's the same deal with Little Big Planet, its pretty and there's no real platforming to speak of.

I don't even know if I should continue playing it so I can write a review for it on my blog. For a game like this, its not really a fair review if I don't finish it.

Maybe I've just grown out of platforming in general.

It gets a little better with the platforming in the second half, but this is in no way meant to be a challenging game.

It should get more attention in the sparser summer months and this game deserves attention!

I don't own a Vita, but this had been one of my most anticipated PS4 games of the year. I'll probably pick this up on launch day. This is shaping up to be a great year for console gaming in general.

It's most certainly not. It sounds like you won't end up loving the game, but as you said, it's an experience. Not saying you have to finish it, but don't review it without doing so.

Hope it has more of the focused platforming sections. The ones the Vita game had towards the end were fantastic but there simply wasn't enough of them.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Of course. Why wouldn't it.

How do you know? Source?

I loved the Vita version but I'm only getting this if there's a physical release. Resident Evil HD Remaster was digital only on PS4 so I passed on that, and that game has a much larger fanbase.

Not sure how I feel about this. This is the type of game you release in the Fall and flood the casual TV channels with marketing for the casual holiday push.

Perhaps Sony knows something I don't. They could still bundle the game sure BUT....I am not sure marketing for the game will be running by that time. Yes you have the super strong Uncharted 4 push at the same time but those Wii owners....Sony said they wanted them? Like several times now...

Funny, the wording on Tarsier's website changed to be less specific about the Mm teams involved. Probably because it's not limited to just those teams.

BEFORE said:
In collaboration with the Mm Art, Design & Tech teams, Tarsier is helping expand this remarkable papery world to a whole new audience on PlayStation 4.

Both studios are working very closely together, jamming, chatting and crafting on a daily basis, to make Tearaway Unfolded a fresh and surprising experience, whilst retaining the magic that made the Vita version so extra-special.

I'll probably rebuy it, not for $60 though. Once it drops to $30-40 I'll pick it up.

This is a good point. I liked the first a lot, not sure I'm ready to drop $60 on it though. Depends on just how much of this game is new. I might budge at $40-50 though.

Considering how poorly tearaway vita sold I could see this being a digital release.

Europe will have a physical release. After the Playstation event a preorder page went up on Amazon. The same didn't happen in NA. That's not to say it won't happen, but it's something to consider.

You think so? I feel like it's a solid B-tier game. Expecting this game to rack up a ton of sales or win lots of mindshare is a mistake, IMO. I love it, but it's a niche game that's just filling a family-friendly slot in Sony's lineup. It deserves more exposure but would easily get lost in the fall. Summer's perfect.

And we all know Sony won't promote it no matter when it comes out.

Loved Tearaway on Vita, I'm sure I'll get this at some point. A wonderful uplifting adventure game. Beautiful looking and sounding.

Tarsier Studios is doing this port. An MM producer and sound team are assisting.
Source? I know they're offering some assistance but the original announcement was pretty clear that this was being done in house.

Edit: I see the above post, but it seems pretty obvious that this is more MM's project than Tarsier's.

B-tier? This type of game on a Nintendo platform is AAA tier. It's also on PS4.

I was thinking an October or late September release. Summer as in July/June is a no-no.

I bought a PS4 in December that I have yet to hook up since there are currently no games I want to play on it yet. This game was on my list to buy. I can't wait to play it.

Great game, will buy again. Anyone who is a fan of PS1/N64 era platformers should pick it up.
More in the charm and collecting things way than being a challenging platformer. But who knows, maybe they'll add more of that into Unfolded.

Last couple levels had some somewhat challenging platforming, but other than that I agree it was more of a collectathon the majority of the game.

That's Nintendo. I just don't seen Sony treating this as a AAA release. Will be happy to be proven wrong.

played this at pax today. it's just as awesome with a DS4. they have this cool thing where you can pick up objects and throw them at the screen by tilting to DS4 up. then you can throw the object back from the screen to a target by aiming and swiping up on the DS4 touchpad. it's pretty cool. having played through vita version. i was impressed with what they've done here.

also, i talked to the guy from media molecule who said 2 interesting things

  • they don't know exactly how to solve the lack of camera issue with ps4. he said they are playing around with the idea of player making an avater that appears in the sun. but they aren't 100% sure how this will really work yet for those that don't have a camera
  • MM is working on a ps4 game, but he wouldn't say anymore about it other than that it's "amazing"

Day 1
and I never played the first (might eventually if this is really good and they're different enough games don't hurt me GAF)
. We need more platformers.

They actually reworded it too. It originally said working closely with Media Molecule's sound team and "tech team". It's clearly mainly being worked by Tarsier.

I kind of hope they'll make this the PS+ release for that month just so as many people as possible can experience it and perhaps grow mind and marketshare for potential sequels.

I love the original.

I hope they make it awesome and challenging* and sell it for full price and then drop the price and then maybe put it on PS+ a year later.

*They can make the base difficulty a bit more challenging than the Vita game and have higher score/timed challenges for gold/silver/bronze medals kind of thing.

This game looks so amazing I almost bought a Vita for it.

Guess I dodged a bit of a bullet there getting the definitive version on PS4!

Same here, though I don't think this is going to be the definitive version. The game was clearly designed with all of the Vita's features in mind and I'm afraid the spirit of it might get lost a bit in translation.

Lost all credibility.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I saw a photo on Twitter of their setup at PAX and was hoping someone would post impressions.

Can you explain this? Having not played the original, I don't understand why you'd need a camera, or what you would be missing without one?

  • Maybe they should create a phone app.

I have one of those 20th anniversary PS4s and this is potentially the first game I'd want to play on it. If I don't sell it before then I'm probably going to end up opening it and keeping it. As time passes I become weaker to the temptation.

Tearaway has a very heavy connection with the player, as the in-game characters are aware that it's you controlling their fate. As such the front facing camera on the Vita would pick up your face and display it during certain story moments; when characters look up at the sun and so forth.

You could also take photos with the back camera and use them to give objects and characters new textures.

I hope this version is actually good and doesn't try to hide it's weak platforming behind "make a crown for the squirrel king"-minigames.
