"Guitar Hero Live" Announced

Changing the guitar layout sucks because I was really hoping for a GH guitar so I could play RB4. :/

Technically if everything goes to plan, you'll just be able to use last gen GH guitars in RB4 anyway.

Interesting how we know next to nothing about both games, yet you're already saying that the new Guitar Hero game has a better tracklist and/or Rock Band 4 is shit. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of brands.

I know. Music game wars are so stupid.

At least it'll have a good track list unlike Rock Band.

I'm curious to see this game in action, but I have little faith in it. Hopefully Activision can do something cool with the series.

That being said, give me that Rock Band 4 plz.

So First person mode, and no mention of anything other then Bass/Guitar? And I have to buy new equipment? That killed my interest.

I don't think any of it sounds bad at all. They've got to try some new ideas, otherwise it's just the same highway to hell (oops). I'm excited for the new guitar actually.

Having said that, I don't think anyone would simply give up on their RB's DLC and switch franchises at this point. Most of RB's fans have hundreds of dollars spent on tracks alone. If old instruments work too, there's no way anyone is paying 100+ again for GH.

As long as i can have a "realistic" drumming experience i'm fine, and by that i mean 4 toms + 3 cymbals + double bass.

Guitar Hero had 21st Century Schizoid Man.

I know which of those songs that have been mentioned has a chance of exporting, and it sadly isn't that one.

Guitar Hero starting back on square one for everything song-related will certainly be a big hurdle to overcome. Even if Harmonix only manages to get a quarter of the library for Rock Band available right away, that's still a tremendous amount of content to try and match.

I'm sorry, I imagine live action in video games looking like Night Trap or original Mortal Kombat.

A friend of mine proposed that they use Kinect on the Xbox One to live stream the game and bounce back footage of people watching and use that for the crowd but I imagine that would go south so, so, so fast.

I think this sounds kinda neat. It could be a good change. Can't you wait to try it?

At the least you're going to have some variety in this space. That's pretty essential.

I was all hyped for this today and now I'm sitting here scratching my head. I need to see it in action but man I think Guitar Hero still has the edge in name recognition. Making a change like this seems like it will drive away the casual audience who just wanted more of the same. I hope its fun cus I'd look forward to learning a new plastic instrument but sucks that it most likely won't be RB4 compatible.

Those were some of the highlights of an otherwise average setlist.

Then again, my two favourite setlists from the GH/RB series are from the first Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5, so whatever.

Different strokes for different folks. I can't decide whether Rock Band 2 or 3's setlist was the best of that series. I'll have to reexamine the Guitar Hero setlists to come up with a favorite some other time.

So if it is First Person, that means you will be watching the crowd the whole time?
I don't want to jam to drunken frat boys.
They should just change the crowd per song. When you play Fallout Boy the crowd will be filled with teenage girls, when you play Dave Matthews Band drunken frat boys, etc.

I think my favorite will always be GH2. I know it got some complaints early on about "the bands you want, the songs you didn't," but Harmonix was so on point with the decisions they made.

Yeah, I'd much rather have that than two nearly identical rhythm games vying for the market again.

When I was younger my music taste/knowledge wasn't quite so broad, but looking back on it it really was weird at some points. Last Child? Bad Reputation? You Really Got Me? And that's not even bringing in some of the 360 exclusive songs. All of which were great fun to listen to and play, but definitely not first choices for a lot of people. That fact actually makes me the game much more endearing to me.

Don't have a problem with this. Rock Band is already going to cater to people who want the same thing as before. Do we really need two identical music games competing with each other again?

Well, my curiosity is certainly piqued. Will have to see how the changes affect gameplay.

Have they mentioned drums at all though? I've only seen guitar/bass mentioned.

Drums were in the live action trailer so that's why most of us are assuming. Speaking of, first person drums (if included) could be interesting, depending on how its handled.

I guess Lola is more populare, but surely You Really Got Me would be the second most obvious Kinks choice?

Don't really understand how RB and GH happen to come back at the same time.

All business consultants think approximately the same way, and both companies were told that a reboot would be feasible right about now? Or perhaps some spying went on and whoever moved first got found out by the other company, who wanted to copy them.

If anything it might be smarter if Acti does only guitars.
If they try to add a whole other slew of instruments it's going to be a mess again. Despite GH and RB being compatible with each other, the sheer amount of instruments is part of what killed things last time.

Sounds......interesting. At least we're not getting two identical music games this year. Really curious to see what this looks like in action.

It is being done by the DJ Hero devs so I have a lot of faith it'll be good. Actually thought they were defunct after DJ Hero 2 so glad to see that's not the case....though I still wish for a new DJ Hero.

Boy that sounds super weird.

I am firmly on #TeamRockBand because I can pester Harmonix on Twitter for Whiplash expert drum DLC

The version in GH2 was the Van Halen cover. Well, a cover of the Van Halen cover, since they wanted a VH song, but they weren't so willing to give their blessing for an original song. It's the same reason why Train Kept A Rollin' is in RB1, despite Activision already signing Aerosmith to their exclusivity contract for a few years, as it was a cover.

Props for at least trying to do something different with it.
Yeah, that's the main thing to take away here. They aren't sticking with the formula that would have easily worked. It's risky but I suppose it's necessary when trying to innovate.

I don't know why it needs to be in first person, though. That's just weird.

I feel like the time for music games have passed.

I'd understand if you had said guitar/band games but music games in general? They've always been niche. DDR, Rock Band, Guitar Hero; they all have had their time in the limelight and enjoyed mainstream appeal for a few years. Just because the genre has titles with waxing and waning popularity does not mean that the genre is dead.

Amplitude's Kickstarter succeeding, even just barely, is a testament to that.

If I had to guess, that's one of the cost-saving decisions that got the game greenlit in the first place.

Train Kept a Rollin in RB1 is hilarious for being a cover of a cover

The rockband games have a great / varied. setlist and there is a 2000+ song library to choose from.

As a primarily guitar player, I bought tons of Rock Band DLC that simply bored me. Guitar Hero took a "guitar first" approach to their song selection, even after they went full band. There are too many Rock Band songs that are "just there" on guitar, compared to Guitar Hero.

Does nobody realise that the first-person angle is most likely for the new VR platforms?

Imagine four of you standing in your room with VR headsets on, playing instruments in front of a big crowd.

New level of immersion in 'live' music, yadda yadda.

I don't like these games too much, but that prospect is interesting.

There was always a part of me that was disappointed with the move to master tracks instead of covers, I always liked to think of covers of covers being tradition across Harmonix's guitar games.

Of course, the pros massively outweigh the cons for actual recordings, but that, plus the additional solos that some songs added were always great.

VR is a pretty terrible idea for music games IMO. The idea of standing in a VR music arena is nice and all, but where does one fit the actual interface of the game? The notes will literally come flying at your face.

Train Kept a' Rollin' in RB1 is hilarious because of what happened when you tried to turn the vocals down. All hail Fake Steven Tyler.
