After two extra "killer features" for Mario Kart 8, what's next for series?

So, with DLC and free updates, Mario Kart 8 received two new distinctive features that could easily be selling points for Mario Kart 9 and 10 - the inclusion of non-Mario/DK universes and 200cc.

Of course it's safe to assume that these features will be present in the next Mario Kart. I, for example, especially hope for more deep work on guest universes, maybe even for new series of cups based on every Nintendo franchise (so we would have Nitro GP, Retro GP and Crossover GP).

But there must be something else, something that makes every single Mario Kart so unique and innovative - like two-player teams in Double Dash!!, bikes in MK Wii, gliders and underwater courses in MK7... so what do you think it will be, or what would you want to see?

Campaign mode? Planes? Some new type of mechanics? 8-player split screen? Nuts & Bolts-style kart building? Level editor?

Take your guess.

Honestly I don't really know what they do next other than Super Smash Bros Kart. They could tighten up the roster and make characters more distinctive.

Hopefully some more attention to the battle mode.

This. A giant stain on a nice kart game.

Limited Edition Amiibo used to unlock non-tilt controls exclusive to GameStop.

Don't even joke about that.

I'd prefer they stick to the Mario universe with occasional guest appearances by characters from other franchises. Part of the fun of Mario Kart is seeing all these detailed interpretations of the Mario universe.

Non-Mario characters are a good DLC hook they could use again in the future, while keeping the base game about the Mario universe.

To be fair, if Mario Kart 8 ever get a DLC with a proper battle mode, I wouldn't be able to think of anything that could improve the series after MK8.

This game went far and beyond my expectations.

What time is it?
The non-Mario related DLC really upped my appreciation for MK8. I hope they move forward with with this type of variety moving forward. I doubt they'd re-brand it from Mario Kart.

I will prefer something more like a distinctive "guest zone" for non-Mario characters and tracks, with separate GP (similar to Nitro/Retro) and the separate row in character select screen.

Pull a MGS2 and market and push the game as Mario Kart 9, but what's actually inside the retail discs and download is the sequel to F-Zero GX

Mario Kart 9:
-All cars are real brands and not optional
-Realistic driving
-Realistic powerups
-Realistic weapons
-Maps based on real cities
-Mario is an engineer

that about covers it

At this point of history, "Mario Kart" is pretty much a common noun, so, yes, gotta stick to Mario Kart.

400cc or bust.

And yes, proper battle mode. And bring back that mission mode from Nintendo DS; boss battles and all. And have half the playable characters be from other franchises, yeah. Okay this sounds good.

It's already the best mario kart.
A cup with more crazy mario courses would be cool (based on 8/16 bit mario & mario galaxy for example) - and while I like the extra DLC, I also am fond of the idea of keeping non-mario universe courses as DLC only. It's a nice thing to experiment with and look forward to but I wouldn't need it as my main mario kart persé.

The only way they could improve this one is with gamepad vs tv screen 2 player races - it's the only thing mario kart 8 is really missing for me. Don't care about voice chat or battle modes personally.

I'd like some more tracks and characters (from any Nintendo franchise) of course. I'd pay for them. :p

People demanding Mario universe only characters got owned the moment Link and Villager was announced. So go nuts with more series inclusions.

I'd like to see a bit more fine-tuned item balancing and removal of fire hopping, I'm honestly surprised the latter hasn't happened yet.

Mario Kart 8 was almost perfect. I really don't know what's left to do.

I wish the dev team would focus on F-Zero for a few cycles now.

While this isn't a huge feature I think Nintendo should add unlockable costumes for each character in MK9 so as to add more variety to the online mode and have more stuff to unlock.

Open, Mario-themed world with challenges, new game modes and collectibles. Cut portions of the world into levels (i.e. Wario Stadium could be a location within the world you can race in individually or explore), or make it entirely separate from the cups (preferable, but very expensive to produce, presumably).

I'd like to add it would be awesome if they incorporated more vertical level design elements into the game.

- 1st-person cockpit view
- 10minute point A to point B races
- Long(er) flying sections
- Pit-stops

Ooo..
Cockpit view sounds cool, pit-stops are stupid this a kart racer not a racing Sim.

10 minute courses are too long as well. Stages with linger flying segments would be fun though.

Not all games need to be open world.

Voice chat with friends during actual races instead of just lobbies.
Real battle mode arenas
Bring back mission mode
An option for double-dash mode with 2 characters per cart and unique items

Work on improving battle mode and netplay. They've pretty much nailed the racing portion of the game. I don't think any Mario Kart game comes close to Mario Kart 8.

Super Smash Kart idea is pretty much coming alive with MK8. There's still room for much more DLC so I expect more characters from their other franchises.

Edit: Mission mode is a good one. More single player content would be great.

-Campaign mode (doesn't have to have a story, can be something similar to Mario Kart DS or Sonic Racing Transformed)
-More crossovers
-Better battle mode
