She's right, though I consider it more of an issue of animal exploitation for profit. Her motive is just as valid though.

Good, because I agree with her.

I wanted to go to seaworld when I was younger but now I don't and I never will.

Also fuck seaworld trying to say that she's wrong.

They're basically jails where the inmates are forced to perform for our amusement. People that deal with rescued animals or animals that couldn't survive on their own, fine. But still there's no need to make them do tricks for us. We're really self-centered assholes of a race.

To those saying that Seaworld cares about wildlife education and rescuing sea animals there is one thing I gotta ask though: If they care so much about sea life, then they do they have parks in the middle of fucking nowhere inland?

Seaworld can fuck right off. I love the "but kids are learning and shit" argument, as if that's not possible without shoving giant, intelligent animals into small pools.

I've kind of developed a distaste for zoos in general as of late.

I've always disliked going to zoos, but went to the Como Zoo in the Twin Cities this past weekend, this being my daughter's first time doing something like that.

She seemed to love it. I was ok for the most part, but seeing seals, apes, and tigers looking depressed as fuck in their small exhibits was really rough.

i agee, i cant stand zoos or similar places. its always depressing to know these animals are their for idiots to gawk at. jus put these animals in nice reserves and let them be.

Yes they do. They are demonizing all the good these places do and why they exist in the first place if they don't.

So because they donate a tiny part of their profits to helping animals, it's ok for them to make these animals miserable?

Did she ask to close down epcot too?

Oh, just Seaworld? ITT gaf marine biologist come out of the woodwork bashing seaworld because they watched blackfish.

By closing Seaworld you are killing every single Orca they have. Free Willy was dead 6 weeks later. They left that part out of the movie.

Why is it so hard for people to differentiate between zoos and commercial animal parks?

There's a difference - a big difference.

Seaworld does do a lot of good stuff for the oceans and for sealife...more than most organizations out there. They have the ability to respond to large and injured animals in a way that noone else can.
They also conduct a ton of research allowing us to greater understand sealife, and have contributed a LOT in this area.

The problem is that they can do this because they have the money to. That money comes from the vacationing family of 5 buying tickets to their overpriced park. And the number one reason the Millers buy those tickets is to see the killer whale show.

Most things seaworld does ranges from great to not terrible. The problem is almost purely with the large sea mammals (the Orcas, the Beluga Whales, etc.).

Seaworld shouldn't be closed down, but the large mammals do need to go...unfortunately, they would have to be replaced with something with as great a draw.

To those saying "Close it down" ...do we just sacrifice the positive? If so, that's fine, but know that it means a lot of other sea creatures go without aid.

To those saying "Just free the whales" ....what should replace them? If nothing, that's pretty much the same as "Close it down".

I'm not defending Sea World (I personally don't care for them) but the situation isn't as black and white as it may seem.

That's not what people are arguing for. Close Seaworld (or at least, ban the large mammals part), take possession of the orcas and let them live out their lives in captivity with no more breeding is more like it. Basically remove any incentives to monetize intelligent large sea mammals in captivity.

Yeah and WE are to blame, not SeaWorld for removing free orcas from their habitat in order to enslave them and make shitload of money, right ?

Why are people ITT trying so hard to make SeaWorld look like the victim here ? What is wrong with you ?

It's obvious that these orcas won't be able to survive on their own if they're released. What needs to be done ASAP is stop the breeding and stop the hunting for new performers. Then put the orcas in bigger tanks and let them live without having to perform a daily routine for human pleasure.

It doesn't take a marine biologist to know that freeing an animal that spent all or most of its life in captivity will most likely lead to the animal's death, since it won't know how to feed itself.

How about Seaworld just stops bringing in or breeding new animals? Then once they eventually die out, Seaworld itself can die out, too.

If you have a smart dog, is it happier in a pen with no interaction, or if you train him with treats? Why do people view the shows as cruel? I will never understand that.

Also, greedy mean Seaworld closed down their highly popular Sea Lion show all spring in San Diego as they rescued over 700 Sea Lions. People act like that is trivial.

Yeah, they are building massive new tanks in all parks.

Also, who is taking care of these animals the next 40 years if not Seaworld? The US Govt that wont provide food stamps for people?

As someone who lives in San Diego, anytime there is an injured or beached animal, they come and rescue it. Every occasion I have seen of them saving an animal, someone in the public yells about how they are killing whales. Blackfish is filled with half truths and lies, like many documentaries. Are they a perfect company? Hell no, but I do not think they deserve the hate, especially when most of the people I know who have a problem with them just heard about the movie, and didn't even watch it. I hate the passion that comes from people that can't even bother to watch or research the topic they are preaching about.

Sea World is not a zoo.

As for putting animals in 'nice reserves'...you mean the ones in Africa that have poachers killing the elephants?

Or how about the ones who protect themselves against the poachers, but then kill off the animals when the population gets to be too much?

Jane's been brainwashed by her time with the Apes. It's probably just some ruse to give her primate brothers easy access to delicious whale meat.

Zoos are so outdated. If you want to see an animal you can see it on youtube. If you want to see it in the flesh, you can fly out to wherever it is. This isn't Victorian London, we have options other than zoos. I don't buy this conservation stuff for a minute, either. The worst of it is that it provides an excuse for people destroying habitat, as they can claim they won't wipe out a species because there's some "really successful" breeding program in some zoo somewhere that'll keep the species alive! Which it probably won't.

[Better than a concrete floored barn in Toronto.](http://www.torontolife.com/informer...ephants-know/?page=all#tlb_multipage_anchor_1)

Toronto moved its elephants to Bob Barker's reserve, which seems like a decent compromise.

I think Whales are probably at a similar level of intelligence, and require a similar amount of real roaming space as an elephant. We're talking bigger than anything that can reasonably be artificially made. Bigger than football stadiums.

A better comparison would be a dog that's being kept at a shelter. Once in a while they get let out to an outdoor area, maybe they get taken for a walk, but most of their time is spent in a small cage. You ever see a dog that has spent years at one of these places? They look as depressed as an animal can look.

Animal shelters are necessary, mainly due to irresponsible pet owners. Seaworld is both irresponsible and unnecessary.

Yeah, bro. I could spend thousands to fly to Africa and see the wildlife, or pay 30 bucks and go to the amazing bronx zoo.

I don't understand why I took a documentary about something everyone already knew to make people suddenly want this to end.

Well admittedly it showed a better argument for closing than "SeaWorld is fucking boring as shit." The Orlando location was just depressing to be at when I was there.

.

Yeah bro. I can see everything about animals on Youtube. Fuck the zoo. Why should I give those greedy fucks my money.

I mean, they take care of the captured animals and help contribute to their overall well being, but fuck it. Teddy Roosevelt was an asshole and his conservation efforts don't mean shit.

Being sarcastic is really tiring.

Wow, the ignorance in this is staggering. Those rhinos really benefited from not being in zoos, right? Because that was a large mammal that people were so heavily protesting against zoos for keeping...only, well, now they're gone. That 'conservation stuff' you don't buy is needed, as has been shown by the California Condor, just barely returned to the wild, or the Giant Panda, which had an unsustainable population size before zoos got involved, or fucking Hawaii, who's native bird species were being killed off until zoos applied that "conservation stuff".

Shouldn't we just be closing down this... and zoos... and circuses...?

EDIT: Maybe not zoos. A lot of species would have already gone extinct because of us if it weren't for zoos, I feel like.

Yeah, Rhinos are extinct because we didn't put enough of them in Zoos. That would have solved everything.

You paying the difference?

Seeing an animal in its natural habitat is prohibitively expensive, therefore we NEED to fly exotic animals to your town so YOU can see them. We also need sweat-shops so people can wear cheap clothing, and we need clear cutting so people can drink cheap coffee.
