Games you remember, names you don't

I have two. Played with both in the late 90ies I think on PC. One is a chess game where if the pieces met, there came in a minigame where you actually had two fight with your opponent to take over. The other one is like a space shooter, where you see the ships from above and have to go against each other on one screen, that is endless because the edges loop. You could choose very different ships, with different weapons and everything.

The second one sounds like Star Control 1

Arcventure. I'm surprised that stuck in peoples' minds as much as it did (It's cropped up in this thread a couple of times), I thought it was rather more obscure than it's proving to be!

Archon seems the most likely, although that's 80s rather than 90s. Wonder if there was a later port or remake.

Edit: Ah, yes: Archon Ultra:

Some iteration of Spacewar, I guess, although Star Control is the highest-profile. Since you're only talking about combat, Star Control 1.

Wow you guys! These are the ones! :)

A DOS (or early Windows) game where you are a guy in a Jetpack / astronaut suit shooting at aliens. I think you could also land and walk around in some areas. I am pretty certain I had it in a 4-in-1 collection (on a 3,5' disk) with "The Adventures of Microman"

The Space Vegetable Corps maybe?

Is there a list of DOS platformers out there anywhere? There's a game I used to play at my grandparents in the 90's that I can't remember the name of for the life of me.

I generally use Mobygames for memory-jogging. It's not complete, though.

Mind you, that's what this thread's for! Any interesting traits it had?

I feel like it's something I would recognise if I saw pictures of, but not many details I could provide if asked. I want to say the main character was male and had blond hair? Semi-medieval vibe to it, you looked for keys to open puzzles/doors (though lots of games are like that). It was 2D and side-scrolling. Not sure if that's much to go on.

Damn, that looks pretty similar. The graphics almost look too good though, and the name isn't ringing any bells. Thanks for the help. Are there any others that fit that description or is that pretty much it?

That was the first one that came to mind, I'm aiming for shareware titles (because they tend to be the things you play once and then half-remember) from the mid-nineties.

There's probably more, but I'd better spend a bit of time thinking about it.

Edit: Dark Ages?

Probably gone too far the other way, graphically, now.

Could it be Phylox? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA1gJWuCBZw

I remember my brother having the same 4-in-1 disk with Microman and that's the only other game that came to my mind when thinking about it o.o

You sure it was PC DOS and not some other home computer?

As for the player character (egg), how did it move if it didn't have arms and legs? Was it just a static sprite that slides and jumps or did it maybe roll or something? Do you remember some details about the colors and graphics, was it black, white and red like in your sketch?

It was just an egg, you pressed the movement keys and it would just start moving, not really jumping, I remember having to correct the course in mid "flight" to the other platform.
The background was always black, the platform color varied, some areas were red, others blue, others green or white, each different color area had a portal and when entering you would get a password for that area. I really think it was on PC, because the PC was in the office, where the monitor box was being used as a makeshift shelf and the Timex was in my room, and I wrote the passwords in the box...

Xargon definitely looks the closer of the two. I'll have to give it a try :) Thanks again.

Wow I thought the question would just get swallowed by the thread let alone already have been asked a few times lol. Mega surprised to see it's even listed on Amazon too. Well cheers bud that's one childhood mystery solved :)

Sorry to bother you, but I'm searchin' for the title of an arcade game that I used to play in the Eighties. It was a 2D side scrolling platform game and you were an explorer of sort. Your aim was to explore an Aztec/Incas/Mayan/Egyptian temple (can't remember exactly) and to grab some treasures. The treasures were hidden inside chests that you had to open hitting them with your head, from below.

Hope that somebody can help me... I'm gettin' a bit crazy over old memories... :/

Found this game called Baluba-Louk no Densetsu, sounds like it might be the one.

Trying desperately to remember a PC game, that I believe was Shareware. A 3D game with very basic polygons graphics. You drove around a Tron-esque motorcycle, in this large map with pyramids, and ramps, etc. Your "tronbike" could shoot bullets, which might have been depicted by little triangle shapes? I think there was a minimap in the corner. For some reason I also feel like you could be, or always were, in first person view.
Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like Cyberbykes: Shadow Racer VR. I used to play this one a lot, just messed around without really knowing what I was doing. Fun fact, Vince Zampella (of Infinity Ward and Respawn) is credited as the producer.

Wow, that's it! I think I played it on some shareware disk that skipped the cinematics, but that's totally the same game. Thanks so much!

A PC strategy game (i think) that had multiple philosophical endings.

One of the endings was about being wary of those who try to keep knowledge to themselves or something.

When I was kid in the 90s, I remember playing a game on what I think was Windows 93.1.

It had "The Entertainer" as music, and was a 2D puzzle game where you had to move your character to the exit. Every time you moved, the environment/enemies moved as well, so you had to plan each movement carefully.

It wasn't advanced graphically, and had the perspective of typical 2D games like The Legend of Zelda.

I want to say you moved around a blue blob-character, but I barely remember.

I want to say the game was called "archy" but I couldn't find anything by that name. Anyone have any ideas?

There was a game on the PS1 where you play a child going through his dreams or nightmares and it was sort of a 3D platformer. Most of the game (if not all of it) took place at night. Can't remember the name though :(

PS1 Game. Front cover had a red dodge viper on it. Was a racing game that went to different planets with real life cars that had guns on them. Played it a lot back in the mid 90's.

Would love to know what game it was. Think it had a pretty good sound track too...

A 3D PS1 game were you walked around in a dark, green jungle/woodland area as a child capturing bug/pokemon-like creatures (not quite as cute, more realistic looking, IIRC) in... like... electrical cubes or something? Even as a small child I was pretty sure it was Japanese. I'm fairly certain it had random encounters and was an RPG.
I really don't remember much about it at all.
Must have been released in the UK though.
I don't remember playing it much. It may have even just been on a demo disc.
Would love to know what it was if anyone has a clue though.

Oh... wow. You're totally right! I've been wondering what that game was for over 10 years.
Always thought I might appreciate it more now than I did then. It was the first RPG I had ever played and at the time and I found it overwhelming.
Thanks again.

Any more info on the type of strategy (real-time, turn-based, grand strategy etc.), rough timeframe, some peculiarities about the graphics, setting etc? Also, did it resemble some other game visually or gameplay-wise?

Doesn't fully fit the bill but maybe Chip's Challenge? It's a somewhat frequent game asked in these kinds of threads.

LEt's see if someone can help me with this.
C=64 game. Text adventure game with graphic screens, as was usual in that era.
Started outside a a ship, a galleon or something similar. Maybe a shipwreck? I also think there was some sad blonde woman, but again, it's very likely that my memory fails me.
The boxart was a beautiful drawing of that ship, if I remember correctly.
I thought it was incredibly suggestive, but I didn't understood how to play it (was a little brat at the time), so my mom brought it back to the store and changed it with something else.
Tried to find it for ages without luck.

Also, old question:
Ok, this is an hard one. I looked around a lot, and it seems like it never existed.

Commodore 64 game. Platformer. Classical music in background. The level was a single one that kept going indefinitely. Black background, blue platforms. The main character had red hair and when he died the hair kept rotating in place while he fell down out of the screen (like he had a flying toupee).
Screen scrolled by itself and you had to keep up [not 100% sure].

Ok, this one is a big shot in the dark. I'm not sure if it was in English or French.

It's from the 80s, most likely, and more an interactive software for kids than a game in itself. It was fully graphical and I'm not sure what type of PC platform it was back then, since I "played" it at my dad's friend's house.

But basically, you had this one screen, in the forest, I think there was a big tree on the right, and every letter on the keyboard would trigger some different event on screen. And I'm pretty sure that was all there was to it.

Anyone remembers about this? I know I'm vague, but it was almost 30 years ago..

Does anyone remember the name of a fighting game for the Playstation 2, with a top down view of characters that could fly.....hover above a stage. Battles played out in Rock, paper scissor strategy using projectiles, spamming a mili attack or reflecting/absorbing projectiles. It was a psuedo DBZ game but reskinned. And i think the name began with a "D", i vaguely remember it. Could have been a late PS 1 game, my memory is shit. lol. Thanks in Advance

Could be Destrega for PS1?

I remember walking into a store named babbage's
and playing a game that could have been a pc game or turbo graphics.
since the controller was black small and rectangular.

you played as some armored warrior or swordsman
who looked like this
UWUYM4f.jpg
( I once thought I had found the game based on this cover)

Anyways the game played very similar to act raiser,
it was a hack and slash platformer...I've been dreaming about one day finding this game
that I marveled as a kid.

Any help would put to rest this anxious memory of mine to rest.

Thanks.

I have one that has bothered me for so long. Thing is, I never played. I only tried to play it at my neighbors computer, but I don't think the computer could install it. This was approximately 14 years ago, give or take some.

It was rendered in 3D on the box, and there were red curtains on the box art(this was like an SE; a big cardboard box with art on all sides, that you opened from the top.)
I remember there being several characters on the box, most of them fat, with hair in front of their eyes, kind of cartoonish cavemen looking, but with modern clothes. One of them held a knife. I'm pretty sure they depicted a family, and judging by everything, it was a story based game. I made some drawings of it, but I won't post them, as I'm really unsure if it would hold up.

It's one of those memories that I just want confirmed as not to think I have dreamed it or anything. Now I know I didn't dream it, and I drew the guy with the knife quite a lot as a kid, but you never know how warped your memory has become over the years.

Please, help me GAF, you're my only hope

Swiss Family Robinson

Do you remember something about the graphics, dominating colors etc? Also, do you remember something about those triggered events, what happened when you pressed the keys?

I've been looking through pics of old big-boxed pc games to find something that sounds like this, to no avail, post the pics, they may help, dont worry about how bad they may look ;)

Unfortunately it's not Samurai-Ghost,
I would have remember that long raid hair, I have to say the graphics quality is very similar.

I wonder if it isn't Trojan (just found out there's a DOS version).

Other games with blue(ish) armored guys that come to mind:
Chiki Chiki Boys (aka Mega Twins)
Dragon Buster
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
Kaizō Chōjin Shubibinman and Shockman (shooting instead of a swordsman)

Also, there's Gladiator (aka Great Gurianos) and Dragon Unit (aka Castle of Dragon), but they're originally arcade games and have been ported on other systems (not TurboGrafx).

I don't have them here, but I'll try! I stress, this is drawn on pc, from memory of a memory. Here we go...

The curtains were red, and the t-shirt was also in a warm color, I believe. Everything seemed like it was on a stage, kind of dark, red curtains. There was a whole family scattered around the box art, I believe, but this is the closest I can come for now.

Nope to both. It's possible that my mind mixed up different games and I remember them wrongly, I for sure played Sammy Lightfoot and it does remind me of the other game, but I'm pretty sure that it was not a game with fixed screens.
Thanks though!

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It was a mech game of sorts. In the game people would have virtual mech battles that they connected to by going up to each other and duking it out in their minds. Since it was connected to your brain you could die if things went bad enough. Even the cops fought criminals using this method... it was interesting. When you looked at people in battles they would be facing each other with a sort of bubble above them showing the fight.

The battles took place in 3 dimensional, multi level, battle grounds if I recall correctly and there was a bit of customization for your suit/mech thing. I believe it was on the GameCube.

I remember renting this a LOONG time ago. It was pretty rad so if anyone knows it... that'd be great. Thanks :)
