Yooka is the chameleon and Laylee, the bat, and if the dynamic and style seems familiar it’s because they were created by Steve Mayles, the same character artist who designed platforming icons Banjo and Kazooie and the modern Kong family during his time at Rare.

Using their unique abilities, the two characters work together to fight enemies and traverse the world around them. Yooka, being a lizard, uses his tongue like a grappling hook, while Laylee can pick up his partner and fly for a short period of time or unleash a sonar blast. The duo have a variety of moves to draw upon. You can see the characters in action in the news video up above.
edit: Video because IGN's layout is goddamn awful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTXBjstzwNE

edit2:
Grabbed the new key art off the site, maybe add to the OP? Guess we'll be heading to snowy locations, get hype!

So Playtonic just posted a vine of the music on Twitter

EDIT3:
Found a new in-game shot over on Tumblr. Weird that it's not featured on IGN's article, I thought they had the exclusive scoop?

Edit5:
Brace yourself.

Here we have the original original designs. Back when Laylee was a little more deranged, bless his cotton socks. He's still as cheeky as ever, though.

Yooka's look has been streamlined a bit, and is much more feminine than it once was. But you already noticed that.

Someone add these two videos from Nintendo Life to the OP.

Banjo and Kazooie, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter?

I like the character designs. Very colorful and fun looking.

Guys, check out the footage at the link. Looks AMAZING.

Things I love:

- The jumping: It looks snappy and responsive, with just the right amount of air time and air control.
- The flutter jump: Looks fluid and fun. The way they use it across a string of platforms just feels so right.
- The barrel roll: Like Diddy rolling on Donkey in Tropical Freeze, but in full 3D. Just perfect.

And those worlds are gorgeous. Was cautiously optimistic before, but that footage has me really excited. I really want to run around in those worlds.

I'm really not a fan of these designs so I hope the rest of the characters aren't like this.

Hopefully the gameplay will be good.

(edit) Maybe I was overly negative, having now seen the gameplay they don't look too bad. Really it was just the pose that rubbed me wrong.
I'm very glad to see we're getting more expansive 3d platformers though as that's a genre that hasn't been getting the love it deserves recently.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
If I've heard correctly, the Kickstarter begins tomorrow.

EDIT: Yep

Formerly known as Project Ukulele, Yooka-Laylee is the first game from Playtonic Games, a new studio formed by several veterans of acclaimed developer Rare. All footage in the news video above is the product of three month's work. Playtonic is launching a Kickstarter for the project on May 1st, with all backers able to pick up the finished copy for £10/$15. There are also plans include extras like soundtracks, art books, and a special '64-bit' special edition, a callback to the team's N64 pedigree. Full details will be revealed tomorrow.

Yeah I was kind of lukewarm to the concept shots they showed before, but in-game and in motion it looks fantastic. Really love the animations for the duo too. And the designs are great. Love the bat's goofy face and dat nose

Dude yessss the game play looks so great. I love how they have DK and Diddy's roll move from Retro's DK games.

Also did I hear that right about Yooka having a grappling hook tongue? Which is only the best game mechanic ever? Sign me the fuck UP.

Characters look great!
The gameplay looks even better - a familiar flutter-jump and a great roll.

Did that video say the Kickstarter is tomorrow?

Edit: Nice, it does. This will be my first one.

I like the character design, but I was hoping one of the two would be a girl like Kazooie.

This will still be the first kickstarter I back.
