GOG Galaxy now open to everyone

My GoG library now says Galaxy Beta instead of Alpha but claims it's unavailable so I can't install it.

Edit: nvm, it was unavailable in the client but I can download and install from the website. Seems to be mostly the same but they have added a friends list now and you can disable creating desktop shortcuts when installing games (thankfully).

I had the alpha and couldn't connect.

Unninstalled the client, downloaded and installed the alpha again, and it updated to the beta, even on my lib.

My galaxy client is still on the alpha version and refuses to update itself. The library shows the beta client and I've already downloaded it, but I hesitate to install it over the alpha client. Gonna wait for half a day or so, maybe the client finally notices it's been superseded.

I've asked for an email like 2-3 times now over the last day and nothing shows up. Nothing in my library. Cmon GOG get your shit together. Could someone just host a mirror or something?

Company professes to advocate DRM-free games . . . requires seemingly arbitrary sign-up process to access company's client.

Seems reasonable.

What is your logic here?

You create profile to store page so you can manage your purchases and then you can have online and offline library of games. Every game comes in form of install package that doesn't require Internet connection to work and will never expire as long you hold on to it.

So what is issue here? To me that is quite DRM free.

One thing from Alpha->Beta is the storefront improved. Looks like the actual webpage you see at GoG.com now.

Still, the library listing and installing process is FARRRRRRR below Steam's. Why do I need those huge tiles? Why can't I set it to "list" mode a la Steam's where I remove the game icons and only see titles? Why is the library added to the store page when it's ALSO on the left (granted only for installed titles right now), it's entirely redundant and not needed.

It's a beta. It does seem reasonable.

They do the same thing when there's a free game promo since some time, to throttle bandwidth. If you paid for that, it would be an entirely different story.

Phew. Restarting the alpha client for the tenth time worked.

So yeah. It seems like the update is also rolled out in a staggered way. Just wait and occasionally restart your client.

Updated, achievements are there (on some games) and the chat is there but it's limited.

Still beta of course but they are improving fast now and the basic features are there. Good job GOG

Same here.

Did they say if they will have an achievements api?

TW2 only, but most of my games were released before achievements become a thing.

Thanks. Was hopping they might add some to the older titles like Witcher 1 . I imagine that would have been too much work though.

Heroes V and Assassins Creed are the newest GOG games I own. Will be interesting to see if they have anything.

Got an email this morning about the beta, thought it was my link to download the client.

Nope, just a marketing email that takes me back to the sign-up page.

Hopefully it shows up today at some point.

Edit: Missed my other email, got my key!

Updated for me today and the alpha turned into beta on my library, so yeah just wait and restart the client a few times.

Just got my invitation and looks pretty slick. For some reason however the scan only finds a handfull of the GoG games on my hard drive. Has anyone else this problem?

Same here. I have eleven games in my GOG Games folder but GOG Galaxy only recognizes Grim Fandango Remastered and The Witcher Adventure Game Beta, which i've apparently forgot to uninstall. :p

if you go to each game on your library there is an import folder option, less than optimal but the scan option doesn't work with all games for me either.

achievements should be patched and I gues they are pretty busy already with The Witcher 3 and Galaxy, I suppose they'll patch them later.

Same for the third party developers.

It'd be awesome if they were able to magically add achievements to classic games. TIE Fighter with cheevos would be a blast.

Clearly not going to happen though

The only think they can do without some work is add achievements like: "You have played GameY X hours"

I dunno. Stump was working on an emulator achievement API for older titles (read: NES/Genesis/etc.), so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that people could add hooks for achievements in older titles, it's just a lot of work to do it.

I think we need to put this thread on the gog forums into the OP.

Not only because there's a bunch of info, but mainly because of things like this:
gog staff said:
HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Cool, I downloaded the beta. Looks pretty similar to where the alpha's been, but now with friends lists.

Unfortunately, I have no friends :(

Derp, linked the alpha thread instead of the beta thread in my post above. Fixed.

Also, for convenience:
== FEATURE SUGGESTIONS ==

Please use: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy. For feature suggestions and votes on them please try do explain how Galaxy and its users will really benefit from it.

== BUG REPORTING ==

Please use: http://mantis.gog.com and include
1. steps to reproduce the bug (if possible)
2. screenshot or movie showing the bug (if possible)
3. Galaxy Client logs (see below)

Where can I find Galaxy logs on my computer?
On Windows Vista or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Mac OS X: /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/Logs

== KNOWN ISSUES ==

- few games are not yet compatible with Galaxy and are marked accordingly on Library page
- games not compatible with your current operating system cannot be accessed from the Library page
- when starting with the OS, Client doesn’t start minimised
- back / forward navigation is only available in Store section and requires further work
- pausing downloads or throttling max download speed is not yet possible
- notifications related to incoming chat messages and friend requests does not always disappear instantly when consumed and may require reloading Store page
- games imported from existing installations will auto-update once, even if updating is disabled
- games installed in Galaxy alpha 0.6 that included DLC may require a full game reinstall in the beta
- reinstalling Galaxy (Windows) to a different folder than the initial install will cause an error
- Moving Galaxy from /Applications on Mac OS X will stop the app from working
- Galaxy cannot be launched by other users on the same computer
- UI is currently available in English only but occasional quirks may happen where “download extras” list is displayed in another language
- option to change currency and some other settings aren’t yet accessible in the Galaxy
- PayPal payment window sometimes does not show properly on Windows

Xion_Stellar

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

I got my Code this morning and I will be sure to install it once I get out of work.

The one thing that's kinda stupid right now is that you can't manually add friends.

You have to click on a user/avatar on the page somewhere. Since I have never posted anything (review or forum post) on the page, it would basically be impossible to add me as a friend right now.

Other than that, I really like it. It's fast, it's sleek, the interface makes total sense for the most part... good stuff.

Thanks for the manual import tip. The automatic scan found basically nothing for me.

Yeah, that kinda bothers me, too. I guess it's quick and easy if you happen to use the forums a lot, but I never did.

Completely agree with you on both point.

Galaxy is gonna goddamn steamroll Steam.
Nope, they don't have nearly as many titles and their sales are lame in comparison. Also add the fact that steam has some of the most popular MP games in the world I doubt it would make much of a dent.

I love gog and own 50 games or so it's no where near the 990 games I own on steam...

I received a beta invite a few hours after it appeared in my games list. I'm not certain that the key will work but the first person to quote my post gets it.
