Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

I'm never looking at older footage again. It just depresses me and reminds me of what could have been.

What I'm going to do is genius. I'm just going to keep staring at screenshots of games with extremely ugly grass until, by comparison, my brain decides that The Witcher 3's current grass is just the sexiest digital grass ever created.

From now on, we only post terrible screenshots of old games until we are all cured.

I'll start. Look at this Duck Hunt screenshot right here. I don't see no HBAO+! I see rubbish. Compare this to TW3. I think TW3 grass looks better. What about you guys?

It's working. It's actually helping me cope. The therapy is real.

damn dude, we only have 2 days to go, hold on to your sanity!

It's weird to see CDPR go from being hailed as the saviour of PC gaming and one of the better devs out there in terms of honesty around here to downgrades and PR bullshit in the last week haha

Ubisoft, EA and others also were once pioneering, reputable companies.

I said it before but companies usually change when they grow, more investors are getting their hands in the soup, stress of getting better and better ROI increases, and shitty things start to happen internally. I've witnessed it first hand, unfortunately.

I'm afraid it's starting to happen to CDPR too with GOG.com and Witcher gaining more popularity every day.

Yup it is only a matter of time. Look at what happened to Bioware.

Look at that flat ugly grass! Nowhere near Witcher 3 !

Edit: Found this comparison, I thought it was funny

5K and PS4 look largely the same apart from a bit of aa in those shots. Okay you can make some of the distant separate tree branches out better...at 5K resolution.

Witcher 2 didn't support it in the release either, it took them 2 months to patch it in.

Crazy stupid, I know.

Oh wow really? I played it some time at launch ages ago but recently re-downloaded it to get a refresher on what happened at the end (god bless Letho the walking plot summary) and it was in 16:10.

I just assumed that it was always like that because CDPR were all PC champion like. I guess I'll either have to find a 16:10 hack or something or play on my TV with a controller. Black bars have started to really annoy me now and I don't really know what's changed.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
The console version has more aggressive LOD. Picture quality isn't taking away trees are causing lower res textures to be used.

Ja, that's what I was thinking.

If anyone with the PS4 or XBOX ONE version passes by here care to take a screenshot of that scene? (I can try to ask...)

Also the trolling was real today (I thought of buying the PS4 version just to see it for myself lol, but the stinginess was too strong... And that is a good thing, becasue I already got the PC version pre-loaded):

grass look bad imho.

TressFX 2.0 in Lichdom tanks the performance, I hope Hairworks is more performance friendly.

I've seen it look a hell of a lot worse :p ...at least it can look good there (on PC).

I wouldn't count on hairworks being playable for most but it's nice to dream, looks great in that gif too!

I watched the gamersyce PS4 Videos and the game looks really good, but that foliage is really really turning me off in some points. Sometimes it looks like a 2D setup :(

I don't get these last minute PR efforts on that front (taking down the pcgameshardware comparison video, etc.). If the day 1 patch is indeed going to bring some improvements to the PC version, then fine. If not, however, and this is all a PR ploy, then why bother at all? In that case, shit is going to hit the fan anyway and these PR shenanigans are only making it worse.

PS: I'm not bothered at all by the way the finished game is looking (in fact, I'm happy that my PC will be able to run it at 1440p). However, I question the rationale behind the way they've basically kept the PC version out of sight for the past few months.

More and more it seems to me that the 'Day One Patch' is being used as a PR stunt to try to assuage potential buyers of issues that reviewers call out in their reviews.

More often than not that 'Day One Patch' doesn't fix the performance issues or any of the major bugs, just minor stuff they've had in the pipeline since before copies went out for review.

If anything, this sounds exaggerated. I'm not expecting more than higher res, same/slightly better frame rates and a setting higher on the PS4 version. Unless he means the other way around :O

Oh, you better believe the same people up in here saying "5K PC with better LOD and IQ is 'basically the same' as PS4", will be the same people in the digital foundry Xbone vs PS4 face off saying how the difference between the two is like PS2 Vs Xbox 360.

So what will be the next great PC hope? Cuz W3 ain't it, it seems.

Right, an early PC version. CDPR has been putting the PR in CDPR lately.

Given the went full Ubisoft with the 2013 bullshot trailer, we can agree that the PR was already really strong on CDPR since that date.

It looks nice and all, but they did a really strange job implementing wind. All of the trees are swaying and bending like they are in the middle of a tornado, yet Geralt's hair doesn't blow in the same direction?

That is already driving me crazy just watching those vids... Not even the hair part, but that tornado wind effect is simply irritating.

Btw gamersyde just uploaded some PS4 and X1 gameplay. Still hoping for a bit better on PC, if not at least my 970 to handle it full on, easily.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt unless we get the same old song for Cyberpunk. Given their size it wouldn't surprise me if they bit off more than they could chew initially.

But as they say, fool me once, etc :p

Dude, I'm aware of some people downplaying the PC version, but I've never seen anyone saying the PS4 version is a generation above the XB1 version. That's beyond hyperbole. And to be fair, my post had nothing to do with the PC version, so why bring it up?

I haven't been in the thread in a long time, am I completely misreading things or does it sound like PS4 is the most preferable of the three?

It's disappointing as a PC gamer. I still think the game looks good, but it's not the eye popper it once was. That said, I would not be surprised for there to be an Enhanced Edition in a few months that adds everything back in. Both of the previous games received some significant post release love in this way. I imagine quite a bit of work had already been done with a higher level of detail and there's no need for that to be lost forever.

Not really. Pc will have smoother performance and mods later on. We supposedly have seen the final pc build if you decide to believe that.

I really doubt that, unless your PC dosn't have a decent Nvidia GPU. If you have an AMD GPU better wait until some benchmarks, we could have another Project Cars situation.

X1 version looks better than the ps4 version in all of the videos I've seen. Super interested in the digital foundry article.

It sounds almost as idiotic as saying "I will kill my handicapped father and brother, so all survived members will consist a healthy family." laptop, kids computer, whatnot, yet all are a part of PC gaming community, the vast majority to be exact. the only reason they downloaded steam is to game. left them out, PC community will left with what? yes they will be people on PC playing whatever at 1080P or higher, and those with lower end PC will have potential to upgrade, but the numbers are only as good as they gathered. provide a source to dispute steam's number if you will.

I didn't dispute the numbers which means you didn't read my comment. Which is why there's no point in continuing the discussion on who the Steam survey involves (everyfuckingone) and why it's rediculous to cite it as a measure of how many people play PC games at 1080p or above.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you do know this but pretend you don't.

But how much more manpower, time and money would need to be dedicated so whole game could be upgraded to at e.g. VGX2013 asset level and optimised?

Modders can do all kinds of crazy shit because they make mod just for e.g. super realistic hair modeling and don't need care how it affects performance overall, but hair will look very very good.

What's up with the awful water interactions/effects? Unnatural looking waves and ripples, sluggish movement, crazy clipping... Skimmed through AngryJoe's preview video and the ocean scene from min 18-19 where Geralt is racing around in his s̶p̶e̶e̶d̶sail boat really bugged the hell out of me.

AngryJoe Plays The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt! [Preview Build]

Did you have video muted? Joe clearly states that devs told them that a lot of water related stuff was incomplete or straight out broken in build they played.

Funny thing. Glaced at GAF few days back and I saw this topic next to that one about "remember RDR?", and thought "hell, I'd take RDR as is over how W3 makes me feel". The initial W3 promo pictures made me imagine RDR but with Witcher setup. You and your horse. Until you see something interesting and put a heel into your mount and speed into some rough shit.

I remain utterly disappointed and to celebrate the launch, will probably cancel my CE preorder.

Feckin' CDPR.

At least I stumbled into Pillars of Eternity last week.

Haha, actually, I did. Well, that's good to hear! I've watched a few other videos (with volume on :p) and the water effects have been bugging the shit out of me. Especially when I see people commenting to say they look amazing.

Quoting myself from yesterday:
PCGH (German) are doing a gradual tech-review. http://www.pcgameshardware.de/The-Witcher-3-PC-237266/Specials/Technik-Test-1158845/

Some bullet points:
  • Performance is "very good", regardless if you're using Radeon-GPUs or Nvidia-GPUs.
  • GTX 770 or R9 280X are sufficient for Ultra Settings @ FullHD
  • 2 GiByte VRAM is enough for the (still very good and diverse) Max Textures.
  • Config File lets you tweak the game extensively, like Distance Scaling (I know some of you were worried) and higher res shadows.
  • Every thread is getting some love. So get your 6 cores out ;). Still, the game is playable with just 4 cores @ 2GHz.
And:
PCGH is usually all about 60+ FPS. 40 is considered bare minimum there. Exact benchmarks and everything will be released once the game is out.
Looks like us Radeon gamers are in the clear for this game.
