Can Nintendo win you back?

They mostly have. I didn't care for the Wii at all, but I love my 3DS and Wii U, especially the former. I'm not a big fan of the tablet controller, and mostly play with the pro controller when possible, but otherwise it's a nice system and has a nice first party library plus Wii game support.

I don't know that I'll buy the next console day 1, especially it it's out next fall, as I'd worry about it failing if Nintendo fans feel put off by the short Wii U life span. Once I see it's doing ok and going to get at least a Wii U level of first party game support I'd be on board for sure.
The NX is most likely a 2017 release seeing as Nintendo usually waits a year before they release a system they just officially revealed & the fact that they don't want to burn the Wii U instal base.

For how much? Would you buy it over a Playstation?

Have you ever seen a Nintendo Direct? 3DS gets so much more love than Wii U it ain't even funny.

What kind of games you talking about? Chances are they've made it, but you never played it.

Also think of the children. Let's not drown what little color there is left in the world.

I have seen most of the Nintendo Directs. Too bad many of the recent ones were mainly Wii U-centric.

The last time Nintendo really made a software push for the 3DS was 2013.

No, definitely don't see anything on the horizon that would win me back. Especially if they dump the Wii U this quickly.

Don't you think it's about time they focused supporting the Wii U? Wii U might get one game announcement every 3 directs or so, but 3DS comes raining down in titles with plenty more to come.

Nah. Too childish for me.

Nintendo makes games for everyone, the idea that they are childish is just not true at all.

Even if I can see how some people might think so because of their marketing.

No, but they can lose me if they release a new home console next year. It is far too soon to kill the Wii U. The only way that would be acceptable is if the next console is retrocompatible with (digital) Wii U games. At the moment though, I am moderately satisfied with Nintendo. While they ruined certain franchises like Fire Emblem recently, they are releasing a lot of gems in the past few years.

Edit: Top of the page noo

I really don't think it will happen next year, and I hope Nintendo drops every kind of compatibility with the Wii U because they need to go x86.

They haven't lost me but I also have no faith in Nintendo and think they are only going to get worst and worst.

They really dropped the ball with the Wii-U and have really screwed up with Amiibos.

It's going to take alot for them and I doubt they will ever get me back fully.

The Wii U has been a disaster. Four years of support is more than enough.

While I do not have a problem with Nintendo's "kid friendly" approach, to say that someone's opinion that Nintendo is too childish is not true at all is absurd. They do cater to children moreso than Sony and Microsoft. This is just the truth. Some of us prefer that, some of us are fine with it, and some of us don't like it.

But don't act like its not there.

i feel that's a troll post. but I could be wrong.

Lol possibly, and I just responded to it... darn.

why did they lose me:

Uninteresting library, underpowered consoles.

what they can do to win me back:

A console that allows TPD to simply port their games without having to downgrade and without ANY gimmicks, some other games than just Mario updates (even though I'm not interested in Splatoon it's step in the right direction) no more amiibos.

When they stop locking content behind hard to find figurines and stop gimping online games (I'm looking at you Splatoon) then they'll win me back. NX had better use some variant of the pro controller and be as powerful as the PS4 or else I'll probably skip their next home console.

They need third party support. It's why I went with them in the 8 & 16-bit eras. There are a few Nintendo IPs I like, but it's not nearly enough to get me to buy into an entire platform for them.

They've never lost me, ive had all the consoles starting from the snes and handhelds starting from GBC(except for the 3ds, still don't have one of those). I can never say no to Nintendo.

Then it would be underpowered yet again.

A disaster sales-wise, yes. But with a healthy library of fantastic first-party software.

Also, Nintendo should be careful and not pull a Sega. Their premature ending of the Saturn and failed transition to the Dreamcast were the last nails in Sega's coffin. I'm not saying that killing the Wii U now will have the same effect, but such a decision might just alienate some of Nintendo's ever-shrinking fanbase.

Nintendo never really "lost" me, but I'll admit that particularly during the Wii/DS era, I drifted to other consoles for my main gaming. Maybe it was just my tastes at the time, but buying a 360 where all my friends were and playing those oh-so coveted third party titles was more important at the time.

I'll be honest though, I find myself playing my 3DS and Wii U a ton more than I ever play my Xbox One. Part of that is because a lot of my friends have moved onto PC and it's much easier/better to play games with them there. Fact of the matter is though, I'll never be able to play Splatoon or Smash Bros. on any console or system than on Nintendo hardware. I love Nintendo games very much and that's why I'll always keep coming back.

Yep, they will have to sit it out.

For how much? Would you buy it over a Playstation?

I would buy both at 400$ ( or maybe just nintendo). I really enjoy nintendo games (the wii brought me back and probably burnt me out too due to playing so much) I just really don't like having an underpowered/featured console along with a "superior" one.

A nintendo console on equal playing field as Microsoft and Sony would be able to get a bunch of third party games as well as maintain their first party ones, so i wouldn't feel a need to get a Sony machine. If it came down to only first parties ( and I guess third party exclusives) I would definitely think twice about buying a playstation along with my nintendo.

as much as i love the last of us.

This is mostly geared to those that jumped Nintendo's ship at the start of the Wii era, but anyone is more than welcome to answer, obviously.

We're all familiar with Nintendo's drastic change in direction during the Wii era. Once they tasted that Blue Ocean, they ran with it full speed ahead, but a lot of gamers out there, some who have been with Nintendo since the beginning, felt cheated, or let down. Nintendo seemed more intent on making games that would appeal to a broader audience, which led them to forget about their core consumer.

More recently, Nintendo has seemingly started to understand that the Blue Ocean strategies of yore are not what made them popular, and are not going to make them money. We've seen them dish out a lot of fan service left and right, and it seems like it's going to continue this way.

There's still a lot to be fixed, more notably, their 3rd party relationships. So, my question to you lot is, what did Nintendo do to lose you, and what can they do that would bring you back?

I'm one of those "Nintendo kids" that only had nintendo consoles (since Snes to Wii) until the past gen.

What nintendo did to lose me?? Had me waiting for Wii games while the Xbox360 was literally drowning on games. What pissed me was the Halo 3 trailer (Believe). What broke me was the Gears of War trailer. When Namco confirmed Tales of Vesperia for 360 I bought it the next week and never looked back.

I was on the Nintendo boat not for mario, 2D platformers or kiddie games (like Yoshi, Kirby, splatoon...you know). I was on the boat for Metroid, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Zelda and JRP like Baten Kaitos and Tales of games. The most "mature" games that you could play "Only on Nintendo". I loved those experiences over anything PS1 and PS2 could give to me (OR THAT I THOUGHT....until the HD remakes for 360 :D). Wii was promising at the beginning...Zelda, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Smash...and then nothing. Years and years of nothing of my personal taste. .The kind of games I used to like weren't on Nintendo consoles anymore so I "Jumped In" into the Xbox. Ultil the last year Wii had a lack of JRPG (xenoblade, the last story, pandora's tower) and Zelda games (Twillight Princess was a Game Cube Game).

Now I have a WiiU (I won it on a contest unexpectedly) and I only bought Smash bros and Bayo2 (and the WiiU was the MK8 bundle). The only games I'm interested to are Xenoblade, Zelda and Metroid.

What could Nintendo do to win me again? Return to 2015. Good online, third party games, multiplats, account system, no meme-controllers, hardware powerfull enought to be able to run the current generation games. That's what I want.

I don't understand people who want the GameCube 2 and fault Nintendo for not delivering. The Cube had great specs, Metroid, F-Zero, a gimmick-free controller, 3rd party support, Smash at launch window... and it failed. What do people think happened? Something something disc size? I don't get it

Still don't own a Wii U, not sure if i'm going to buy a Wii U.

The only game i'm really interested in is Zelda but it feels like it will be one of the last big games on the console and i'm not sure if I want to buy a console for just one game.

I'm slightly interested in Xenoblade Chronicles X but from what i've seen so far it's not a system seller for me. More like a bonus if I ever happen to buy a Wii U.

A mainline Fire Emblem or a rpg Paper Mario for WiiU would potentially push me over the border of buying one.

.. and before someone mentions it. No, I did not like the look of Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei at all :/

Nah, pretty sure I'm done with the consoles. Handhelds maybe, but I've sunk too many bucks into their stuff of late. Fuck 'em.

I'm going to force myself not to buy Zelda because I was let down by Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess. Metroid is all but dead. Mario and DK still bring the heat, but so do other titles on the XBox, and I don't have a One yet either.

A standard controller and games made for it would be enough for me.

Some innovation on that front would be nice, BUT like in the old days. Nintendo gave us the d-pad, main buttons in diamond formation (uncomparable with genesis' abc for me, much better), shoulder buttons. They basicaly gave us PS1 controller after that. That's meaningful innovation to me - it makes controller better. If they can't do it, fine - a standard controller then.

And before someone says "But the Wii U gamepad is just a standard controller already, just with the screen in the middle". Please....

On the software side, more variety. If they can make platformers as good as Mario games, why woudn't we see some aesthetically different games from the same genre and with similar (or even different, but good) mechanics and design quality?

Just more variety in general. I feel like nintendo's creativity is in some kind of Mario and friends prison. I just want them to do something different.

It doesn't have to be "more mature", just different.

Maybe even try different genres with skills they have, I'm sure we would get something interesting.

For me it's more of they never really had me to begin with. The Wii was fun for a bit until the novelty wore off. No interest for me in the WiiU. So I guess of they start having more 3rd party content and actually try to make good hardware I'll gladly buy their product. They just can't compete with the Xbox One and PS4 for serious gaming. If they got on that level people would be more apt to but their stuff but that's just my opinion and I could be wrong. But right now the 3DS is as far as I go with Nintendo.

Sure they did a lot of casual games, but they still gave us amazing core games too so I dunno why the longtime core Nintnedo fan would feel betrayed.

They've never lost me! The Wii U is probably my favorite console of all time, behind the Dreamcast.

Basically how I feel. It's been a henemoth for me, blowing the other 2 outta the water so far.

Maybe, but it would require a big shift from their current direction -on both hardware and software- and, frankly, I don't think that Nintendo cares for gamers like me anymore.

It’s very difficult to get excited for a Nintendo console based on the type of software they make these days. Their focus has shifted towards casual games, party games, life simulators, quirky gimmick-based stuff, mini-game collections, myriads of Mario cash-ins etc. They may throw a bone here and there, like Xenoblade, but the matter of fact is that I have no interest in the type of games that dominate Nintendo consoles these days.

And while I do have interest in several of Nintendo's classic franchises, I just can't get excited by what they usually do with them. Some of them, like F-Zero, are dead and Nintendo failed to replace them with new games that appeal to me. Others don't capture the imagination like they used to, they just receive polished, but mostly unexciting, sequels that do almost nothing for me. And others, like Zelda, have either failed to evolve, or moved into directions that simply don't resonate with me. Generally, based on the software available, the reasons to own a Nintendo console became less and less over the years.

Furthermore, Nintendo doesn't seem interested -or capable- in introducing new IPs that appeal to me. When I gamed on Nintendo consoles, I wanted more core IPs like F-Zero, along with more games in the vein of Zelda and Metroid. And, by that, I mean larger-scope games, that offer full-fledged single player experiences in absorbing fictional universes that don't feel like Saturday morning cartoons. But Nintendo's teams don't make such games anymore.

I'll bite. The most popular title in Europe besides GTA is Fifa, which plays better on the GamePad than on any other controller, thanks to the additional gameplay features brought by the touchscreen, and the superb low latency, played off TV.

Only happy fews know that, which is a shame.

Until they make a console that has hardware that can be called equal to all the competition they will never have me back, and it's a shame since i do spent so much on games. Because right now, there are not allot of games on the Wii U that i would play, and why would i play 3rd party games on that thing when they clearly look better on the competitions console? There just a few of their 1st party games that i actualy like and thats just not enough for me, if they would have made a console with better hardware all the 3rd party would not have ran away from them. IMO it would have the best 1st party games and the best 3rd party games. But right now that is not the case and until they change that I will skip Nintendo and yes even if i miss out on certain very good games.

Look, the answer this gen is the same as it has been since 1996. You need to own the Nintendo system plus one but not both of its competitors. SNES was fine to have be your only console. But since then, Nintendo hasn't had decent enough 3rd party support to be your only machine unless you don't play that much. However, their 1st party support has always been good enough that you don't really want to miss out.

N64 + PSX
GCN + PS2 (or XB if you preferred)
PSWii (or Wii60)
Wii U + PS4 (or XBone)

It's a simple formula and it's been true for 20 years now. If "they lost you" during the Wii, you missed out. You missed out on the Galaxy games, Prime 3, Melee, and most importantly, you don't have the memories of making Miis of all your family and friends and then going bowling with them in 2006. Boring by today's standards? Maybe, but I wouldn't trade those memories in.

Nintendo lost me with the GameCube. My friend tried to convince me it was a good system, but the only evidence he had was Smash Bros Melee, which I couldn't stand. I was pure Nintendo up until that point. I bought a PS2 instead.

Then, I experienced the one-two punch of Wii Sports and Super Mario Galaxy. I've been almost strictly Nintendo since.

They completely lost me with the Wii and have since already won me back with the Wii U, which I purchased after Zelda was announced. It's a great machine, I love the MiiVerse, the interface. Its' my favorite of the bit 3 consoles right now.

I never left. Wii U is the only new console I own, and it's all I've been needing with the incredible exclusives. Splatoon is looking to be amazing, and they've been doing a great job with the old IPs they've been using. Would I like a new metroid prime? Sure. Would I like F-Zero? Probably.
I actually don't really like GX. Too damn floaty for my tastes
But overall, I don't think I'm ready to get off Iwata's Wild Ride just yet.

Not really.

The only big draw to a Nintendo console is Nintendo games, and they don't have the appeal they once did. I'd rather play 3rd party games which is why PC + Sony/MS console is the best choice for me. What really sucks about all this, is that it used to hurt a lot that I didn't get to play Nintendo's first party games but now it's like no big deal.

If they released a console that allowed 3rd party developers to make competitive games on it, I'd be more interested. As is, naw.

I was a die hard N64 and Gamecube fan, but since the Wii they stopped existing for me.
What would they need to do to win me back?
-release a console with current gen specs
-make a new wave race
-make a new 1080
-make a new f-zero
-make a proper squel to Donkey Kong 64
-make a proper sequel to Mario 64/Sunshine. Maybe it's time for the Mushroom Kingdom to go open world ?
-get someone to fill the void after Iguana/Rare/Factor 5 with system seller second party exclusives, and that goes hand in hand with having current gen specs

Nah. Too childish for me.

Care to explain?

As the OP, I should probably give my side of the discussion. They never lost me as a consumer, but I do have some issues with their strategies. I would love for them to remedy some of their 3rd party relations. I love Nintendo games, but I also like playing some 3rd party games and I'd like to be able to play those on the same console.

The company can be quite stubborn and that's mostly the higher ups. There's an interesting interview in an old Nintendo Voice Chat with someone from Gamespy, the people that ran the Wii & DS online infrastructure. He spoke about an argument between higher ups and developers about voice chat, if I remember correctly. The developers wanted it, but the heads of the company did not.

These kinds of things make me wish they'd let Nintendo America & Europe take the reigns a bit. The Japanese game scene isn't the powerhouse it used to be, but they still treat the community like that's the case. They hold on to antiquated ideals that are really holding them back. I feel that, more recently, they've been really open to new things, so I have high hopes for the future.

i only got back on board due to playing twilight princess & super mario galaxy on my girls 'wii fit machine' and havent looked back. wiiu & 3ds make up the majority of my gaming time now.

Nintendo never had me. First gaming system was the Commodore64 and if someone else needed it for rudimentary word processing then it was outside for me /loser

I don't limit myself. Most consoles have great exclusives. The 3DS and Wii U have already paid for themselves for me.

Well, i'm still with them, BUT, and this is a big but, they are very , very close to lose me.
My Nintendo disgusting started with the Wii, back in 2006, when they launched a console so underpowered like that. I mean, the Wii is ridiculously underpowered, but i lied to myself until 2009, waiting for ports, more first party games, better third party support, and then.... nothing. So, 2010 i decided to have a second console, a Xbox 360, and i was become more cautious about Nintendo, an decided to give a good chance with their next console, so 2011 , e3, apparently a good thrid party support, a powerful console, and bam ! the support drops one year later, and the console wasn't so powerful. Even Gamecube ( the less sold in Yamauchi era), and N64 ( with less third party support) , went to something so awful as the moment Wii U is living right now. We didn't have even good variety with first party games anymore. Back in the n64 and gc days, we had sports with real people and cartoonish, we had mario kart, f-zero, cruisn, wave race, fps, horror games, platform, rpgs, what do we have now? One racing game. No fps. No realistic sports, and the worst third party support ever.

So , i will wait to see what is going to happen with their new console. If its not powerful enough, with no games enough, i will wait until the end of it's life to buy it.
