Black Tusk Studios renamed to "The Coalition"

This is like renaming Pixar to Radiator Springs Studio and having them make Cars movies for the foreseeable future. Disney's shrewd but not on this level, and doing it twice over.

Disclaimor: I know the analogy isn't one-to-one.

Yeah, that's a terrible analogy. Games aren't like movies. Pixar has also shown they can make brand new characters, worlds, and stories time and time again, so even if MS owned them, they wouldn't have them just make Cars. Also, Black Tusk hasn't even released a game at this point.

haha that is such a stupid fukin name for many reasons

1. no one gives a shit about geow lore, the story is trash as is the whole premise of it
2. putting 'the' in the name makes it sound like a music band or something
3. there was nothing wrong with 'black tusk studios' name in the first place

the only positive i can take away from this is ms is serious about gears and we will be getting lots of games from them in the future. still should have name it 'coalition studios' or something even 'cog studios' sounds better

The Coalition sounds more like a Big Brother alliance

At least Gears fans don't have to worry about a lack of games in that franchise

Well terrible name change and it sucks that this team that was supposed to build the biggest IP for microsoft since Halo is now just making Gears of War games. Really wanted a new IP from them.

Cool, I'll steal the Black Tusk name and turn it into the name for my new drone-death metal band. It'll make way more sense there.

Wow that's unfortunate, just a few days ago I was listening to a podcast where Black Tusk was discussed and I thought to myself what an awesome studio name that was. Guess not...

My thoughts exactly. When's your demo releasing?

When people hear 343 Industries, they associate it with Halo; when they hear Turn 10 Studios, they know that’s who makes Forza. Moving forward, when you hear The Coalition, we want you to think of Gears of War.

I understand this quote and I have nothing against it really as it's accurate and I like the series', but I'd like to see what else these studios can cook up. Forza series is getting a little stale for me (not Horizon, the main series) under the right circumstances I think 343i can make a good new IP.

I don't think it's necessarily a good thing for a studio to be known for one series, but it happens I guess.

On topic of the name, I much preferred Black Tusk.

Games aren't like movies.

AAA publishers like Microsoft want them desperately to be more like movies.

Pixar has also shown they can make brand new characters, worlds, and stories time and time again, so even if MS owned them, they wouldn't have them just make Cars. Also, Black Tusk hasn't even released a game at this point.

Fine. It's like for Pixar's first feature film in 1995 to be named Pride Rock Studios and make Lion King sequels never to hear from Toy Story, Monster Inc., name your favorite.

seeing as Bungie got sick and tired of making Halo games all the time and bought themselves out, is it possible with this studio too or will the talent simply leave if they get bored of making Gears games?

What a waste of good talents too just turn them into a Gears studio.
I was hoping a studio like this would get the chance too foster there own IPs, a shame really.

That's got to be depressing for some on the staff. To go from a new AAA IP to being a Gears of War factory.

that already happened with the Gears studio "epic games". Black tusk is only just beginning (because microsoft wanted to keep the ip going)

Trust in Phil Spencer

I’ve been really impressed with the work of @GearsViking [Black Tusk’s Studio Manager Rod Fergusson] and the team so far.

Hard to tell long term what @blacktuskstudio will be doing but for now they are busy on GoW.

But in an interview with GamesIndustry International, Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer claimed that the project was "a concept piece".

"I wouldn't say things have been shelved," he argued. "Obviously, [Gears] will become a big focus of the studio and something that will be critical to them driving forward. There's not really something that was on the road map that all of a sudden goes away.

I gotta agree, I think it sucks that these studios will only work on a singular franchise. I hope that's not really the case, but it probably is. Such a limited way to go forward.

It's crazy to me just how afraid of risk publishers (in this case Microsoft) are. This studio was supposedly formed to create new IP, and now its going to churn out GoW sequels - because new IP is too risky.

I love indies, but I also like big retail games - and their future is looking pretty bleak.

No.

MS bought Bungie, canned their new IP because they were screwing up Halo 2 and told them to make Halo which upset the founders.

Microsoft opened Microsoft Vancouver and built them from the ground up, who were originally making a Kinect FPS then it was canned and also did a Flight Simulator thing too I think? Or helped on it. Then became Black Tusk to work on a new IP, now The Coalition to make Gears. Its an entirely Microsoft led studio, theres no money to take themselves out of MS and no-one else has ever done it either.

If you want to work on Gears, you work at TC, if you want to work on non-Gears, you can go elsewhere, possibly even Redmond, where you can work on multiple games with partners which they do a lot.

Or perhaps the people there are excited to be working on such a big franchise? I really don't get things like this, if people were that upset they can always leave?

Microsoft is just dead set on making each studio only pump out one IP forever. That is going to get really artistically boring. Black Tusk was a better name, and why not just let studios try out new IP's, you might be surprised at what the creatives can do if given room.

I don't think that's a fair statement to make considering sequalitus is an industry issue in general. Not to mention the fact that Black Tusk has existed for years, and has yet to develop a game to a point where it's even presentable, let alone playable/ready for release - so getting their feet wet with an existing and proven IP is a good way to ensure that they still exist years from now.

And Lionhead's next game is a new IP, and Rare was allowed to create whatever the hell they wanted for their next game. Whether that's an existing IP, or something entirely new is yet to be seen.

I don't think Sony is forcing any of their studios to stick to one franchise which is the main thing people seem to be complaining out. Naughty Dog has worked on Crash, Jak, Uncharted, and The Last of Us. Suckerpunch did Sly and Infamous. Evo made Motorstorm and Driveclub. Media Molecule is working on a new IP. Guerrila Games is working on a new IP. Sony Bend is working on a new IP. Sony Santa Monica has worked on a lot of different games outside of God of War. The only studio that seems to be stuck to one series is Polyphony and that's probably by choice considering Yamauchi's passion for the franchise.

There is nothing to suggest tgat MS is "forcing" any of their studios to work on cerain games either. What you say about Yamauchi can be applied to Greenwalt. People just like to make their own fanfiction about whats going on with these devs and rarely does it have any basis in reality.

Being solely focused on Gears of War like 343 is too Halo is the biggest bummer.

I like Gears of War. I could see myself playing another Gears of War game if it's good. But to know this team is solely going to be pumping out Gears of War games is disappointing.

Won't argue that, although I think never is a strong word.

In the end it's up to Microsoft and when they think Halo (and eventually Gears) has run its course. Who knows when that will be.
It won't be anytime in the near future. These studios will be pumping out Halo and Gears of War games for this generation and the next.

Fine. It's like for Pixar's first feature film in 1995 to be named Pride Rock Studios and make Lion King sequels never to hear from Toy Story, Monster Inc., name your favorite.

Still a terrible analogy considering the video game industry is very different than the film industry. The AAA game industry is all about sequels. At least MS isn't doubling the studio size and forcing them to make a new Gears game every year like what we've seen with Activision, Ubisoft and EA. Even 343i got 3 years to make a Halo game. I assume we'll see something similar with The Coalition.

Also, people want their Gears. I sure do. Would fans really want MS to outsource Gears of War to another developer so The Coalition could make a new IP? Look what happened with Judgment. That was pretty rough from a PR perspective. Also, look at other franchises like LittleBigPlanet. LBP3 was a bomb without Media Molecule behind it. Sly Cooper didn't exactly do very well without Sucker Punch. Could you imagine if Santa Monica and Naughty Dog handed off their franchises to other studios and focused on new IPs? It just makes sense to have the same team consistently work on a huge franchise like Gears. Hopefully we still see The Coalition eventually branch out much like ND did with The Last of Us after 3 Uncharted games, but for now it just doesn't make sense. Even Santa Monica cancelled Stig's game and moved everyone to God of War 4 much like the current Gears scenario.

Awesome stuff. Hopefully the potential to move froward with a game like Gears 1 rather than what Gears 2 and 3 were will finally be fulfilled.

The Gears universe is filled with untapped potential with games similar in theme/atmosphere as the first.

This is good news for us Gears fans. A couple of years ago this was looking like a dead franchise :/

Now we're back.

I don't think I ever said Microsoft was forcing any of their studios to do anything.

Wait, do you really think this?

I'm a huge fan of Gears
/Epic
but the campaigns in those games are completely forgettable. the real heart of the franchise got it's roots from Unreal Tournament and it's still alive today because of the MP, not the SP.

Haha, well done.

I like the new logo, definitely bigger, better and more bad ass than Black Tusk's logo.

Pretty bad name change if you ask me. Black Tusk was fine.

I wasn't a big fan of Black Tusk at first but it grew on me over time. The new name isn't the greatest, but I expect it will grow on me over time as well.

Does anyone know the genesis of the Black Tusk name? Since the studio has changed so much since it opened perhaps the Black Tusk name didn't really fit with where the studio is at these days. Maybe they polled the people working there and they decided they would like a new one?

I liked Black Tusk for how it encompassed their city of Vancouver, but I dig The Coalition as well. Linked to the franchise they'll be working on while still not making it too obvious for those not in the know.

Love the logo especially.

Can't wait to see Gears at E3.
