ARK: Survival Evolved Trailer (UE4, Dinosaur Island Survival, Beta Signup, MORPHEUS!)

From the comments this seems like a proper Early Access title, one that is still very much in development and will run like shit most of the time because it's still very much in development. People are too used to Early Access being a complete game that is all optimised and working but maybe missing the last bit of the story mode.

So are the graphics in OP bullshit?

What hardware does that take? Any way possible to get that? The screenshots posted have been... ... ... bad.
Graphics are definitely not like in the trailer. But some of the screens here seem to be with settings turned down, which is necessary for most due to this having very little(if any) work on optimization.

Being in a decently playable state is kind of important if you're charging people money to play it. This seems quite borderline.

Graphics are exactly like the trailer. The problem is the game isn't optimized enoighbfor any PCs to run it.

They have PVE Servers, but keep in mind exploring isn't as easy as say Minecraft. Your hunger and thirst drain quickly, food spoils fast, there's large chunks of land with no water, external factors like heat, cold, rain effecting your character, very long day night cycles so when night does hit you'll be in near pitch black for a long time unless you have a torch ready and even then you can't stitch to another item and keep the light. Still fun to explore but presents more of a challenge than typical.

ah I see, didnt realize it was one of those kind of games

are resources always scarce, or is there like a base camp where everything is provided - and you only have to worry while exploring away from it?

So what did they run it on lol?

980 ti can't cut it?

A 980 ti can do most of the heavy lifting but I think their trailer was made off either three 980's or three titans. It was in a stream or something like that near the announcement. Also it doesn't perform so bad it's unusable. On a GTX 580 and i7 2600k here and I'm getting 30~fps on mid-high settings with the internal resolution and ground scatter over halfway up.

It's not ideal having the internal resolution lowered but it's easy enough to balance it out to somewhere serviceable while waiting for some code cleanup. For some reason though it seems to run like absolute crap if you play single player, at least for me it does.

The graphics do actually look like the trailer if you jack it up though, and I didn't even turn on tessellation. I was getting about a frame a second though.

There is no SLI support for the game (and it won't have it till Windows 10 release) and Lirik has 3 Titan Xs and he couldn't max out the game.

980Ti will be able to run it pretty much the same as the trailer. Plenty of drops below 30FPS that is.

The game looks really nice with Epic settings (in my experience it looks very close to the trailer), now we just have to wait for some serious performance optimizations to get it to run okay at those settings as well.

Logged out in my wooden house with the door locked. Maybe I won't be dead when I login next.

Hiding in the shadows just in case something decides to investigate my campfire. It gets pitch black most nights. Started the platform for the house that afternoon after picking a spot not too far from clean water and not too close to Carnasaurs and those stupid giant eagles.

I don't think I've ever seen EA devs have this much communication this early on. Sure you might get an update once a week or something, but these guys are posting daily updates on the steam boards and having very open communication. It's really good to see and makes me even more excited for the game.

Hopefully the gaf server goes up soon. It'll suck to start fresh but I'd like to play with an actual tribe. Can only lone wolf for so long.

I found a bug that if you can prone under someones house then stand up you can loot/kill them. :/ So make sure your house is at ground level.

Obviously it was rendered frame by frame and paced up to a decent frame rate.

The trailer never said real-time.
It is perfectly feasible for something to be in-engine but not real-time.

The game will be awesome if they optimize the performance enough. It looks amazing but I was playing with 15fps yesterday.

A triceraps followed me into the ocean and got eaten by a megalodon.

Met a group of people and played for about 8 hours with them. Huge amounts of fun roaming as a tribe and hunting dinosaurs. Managed to get to level 20 where we could mount the triceratops! Too bad each saddle took alot of hide, so we had to keep hunting. Overall, theres a huge amount of things to do in the game, and even the devs have stated ~100 hours and more of content at the current state of the game.

One of my tribesmen were fiddling with the irrigation pipes (yes they are in the game)...It's pretty cool, if you manage to build the pipe from a water source all the way to your base, you can have a tap and drink from it, removing the need to swim!

The server I ordered said they hope to have all servers up within 24 hours. Hopefully it'll be up tomorrow night!

If you make it a GAF-only server, please let us know the details! I would echo other people's sentiments that a "home" server would be ideal!

So I was just watching BikeMan's stream and he was playing with some guys who are level 30. The stuff that you can craft/do is crazy. They went through some caves and in order to get through parts of the one they were in they had to craft a wooden bridge to get across gaps. There were giant snakes/bats/spiders for them to fight inside of it. They also mentioned that if you set up an irrigation system to flood a building and then release the water you can flood parts of the map out if you want to. This game is already better than any other survival game, hopefully they get the optimization fixed in a decent time.

The game has sold 45,000 copies so far in two days: http://steamspy.com/app/346110

I wonder if it could keep up the sales pace?

It will probably blow up even more if they fix the optimization issues sooner rather than later. It's a really good game with a ton of content and the word of mouth is really good even with the optimization problems.

If anyone is interested I was thinking about making an OT for this game. This thread has some pretty good info in the first post but since it's titled as a trailer thread I figured I would make a new one if there was interest.

Game seems great.

Some serious technical issues but they are patching constantly and I can already see the performance going up bit by bit.

The actual game itself is preety amazing so far, so much to do and see.

Great game just needs a patch for optimization. I get 20fps no matter what my settings on a 970. Once that happens I can get back to trying to find a new home because a T rex came in and stomped out my old one.

Got in and after 20 min, the slideshow was real with a torch on. Hopefully after a few patches this can get up to par.

Anyone know if there's a level cap preventing you from learning all craft items? Concerned getting near everything at the start will screw me in the end and then I'll need to recreate my character and hoard the points

Wow have to say some of the comments here are quite impressive. Some unique stuff.

Its not like Far Cry 4 where every story was basically "it was crazy man, creature <X> attacked enemies <Y> - and it was chaos"

v170.0 is live:

Current (v170.0) Patch Notes

* Added missing "Spyglass" engram (like binoculars), which also enables you to craft the later glasswares. Moved the "Scope" Weapon Attachment to level 30, down from level 40.

* Balance: Fist Damage reduced by 20%, Argentavis AI aggressiveness reduced by 25%, Tran Arrow Tranq-Power increased by 20%, Slingshot Torpidity Power Decreased by 10%

* Reduced the rate at which food spoils in the inventory of an NPC creature, by 75%, to aid long-term creature maintenance

* Implemented a "Low Memory (4 GB RAM)" and "Low Memory DX10" launch options that reduces graphics and audio effects to save about 800 MB RAM, likely enabling 4GB RAM players to get past infinite-loading screens.

* Reimplemented stylish animated-movie loading screen, fixed up some graphics on the "Play Local" menu, exposed various gameplay options to the "Play Local" menu, so that you can more easily customize your own server or local play experience.

* Added an option to hide the Server Name from your Pause Menu, so that streamers don't have to give away what server they're playing on.

* Selfie orbit cam, [K] by default, now collides with structures geometry so that you can't use it to... spy... into other players' houses... creeper!

* Added 3 "PvP-Hardcore-OfficialServers"... for the truly hardcore (you have to create a new survivor after each death :)

* Added ?MapPlayerLocation command argument for player-hosted servers, when used will display the current player location on the 3D Map. (not very hardcore/realistic ;)

* Populated small pickupable rocks across all of the ARK's beaches, not just in the southern coasts.

* Increased # of server search from 50 to 100
* Filter "password protected" servers on the Steam backend, rather than locally, to return more servers

* Fixed a Localization crash
* AZERTY French keyboards can now rebind keys properly
* Initial DirectX10 Shader Model 4 support -- ubersky won't yet render :p. Also reduces game memory footprint by ~400 MB

* Player counts on the server browser are now correct and accurate
* Getting "Winded" in water no longer prevents you from swimming upwards completely -- you now just swim upwards more slowly, and so are less likely to absolutely drown.
* Pause Menu now lists the Server name
* Server browser now has a list of "Survivor's Servers", upon whihc you have a survivor, Favorite Servers, and Friend's Servers
* Fixed an issue where NPC's would not attack often at lower-FPS times on servers
* Broadcast Server messages now force the chat to appear (typically used to notify of server maintance)
* Bonus Item Skins (Stomped Glasses, Cowboy Hat, Noble Saddle) are permanent, locked to your character, and given again after respawn (dropping them simply removes them if you don't want them -- if you want to keep them, apply them to an item).
* Fixed some graphical artifacts with the water, waterline, and underwater particles
* Slingshot torpidity multiplier reduced slightly
* Inventory Key can now be rebound
* Arrow keys now turn rather than strafe, and can be rebound

The server is called "NeoGAF Unofficial ARK Server". You'll have to find it using the Steam server browser and then to easily find it again add it to your favorites. I'm going to hide the password in this post for now and see how it does.

if you quote this post you will be able to see the password. Please be patient with this server as I have never owned a server before and done any of the heavy lifting!

edit - and good timing, just like that I have to update it. It should be up in 20 minutes or so!

edit2- and it's up again, enjoy!

^^ Thanks a bunch man. Be joining very shortly. Well once I figure out how to use the server browser anyway. 500 servers on there and not figured out how to add a search term other than the game yet.

I just ended up scrolling down to N and finding it. Once you find it once you can add it to the favourites so it's easier to join a second time.

Hmm. Time to restart on GAF server. I'll be around after I eat. If people want to easily meet up I say just spawn in the first available spawn location as it is the easiest area and the one most are probably familiar with

BTW, it doesn't seem like the game patches itself if you launch through the steam server browser. I coudln't connect to the gaf server so I went to launch it regularly and it turns out I had a patch to download.

They literally just put one out as you spoke, so perhaps it's just because one just showed up.

Heh maybe it was that then. With this latest patch I've definitely seen a performance improvement. I'm geting a steady 30 with settings on high now. There's still some occasional frame lag that happens but it's a lot better than what it was.

Well there's some better ones on the way too now. The low memory version should be usable very soon which could get some of us better performance, but there's also a patch for GPU utilization coming today apparently. Low Memory patch is in about 10 minutes.

The development of the game started in November and the team has 40 devs. Some of them worked on DCUO, that is why the game almsot same customizations options as DCUO. You can tame anything in the game. T-Rex takes 5 hours to tame. DX12 support will come soon to increase performance.
