Witcher 3 sold 4 million copies in the first 2 weeks!

I do wonder how many of these people will end up being really disappointed and/or stop playing the game after a few days? This has nothing to do with the quality of the game which I believe is really good and a huge step up from Witcher 2 (which was a chore to force myself to deal with the controls. Just ignored kb/m with Witcher 3) which I liked a lot less then Witcher 1. I'm enjoying the game a good deal. If I replay the series I'm cutting the second game out. This is more about the reasons why so many bought the game. For many I think it was because it was the next big blockbuster that was being pushed. Not because they really had a strong desire to play the game or were that interested in the series. Not because they were fans of RPGs or even into heavy story based games. Instead it was the thing to buy and be apart of and then forgotten as the next big thing comes out.

Is the game amazingly polished?
At this point? It is pretty polished. Not great but good. Still enough notable complaints that further patches are needed.

But it has moved beyond where it was at launch where bugs and issues were much more rampant. It was pretty bad for a while.

I personally had frequent crashes(almost every 30mins to an hour), the XP bug, and some other minor annoyances here and there. And I wasn't the worst of them.

Elder scrolls series continues to grow and sell boatloads. Fallout too. There is certainly a bigger market for open world single player RPGs then the industry as a whole seems to think.

Going forward, hopefully other PC exclusive devs prioritize console development.

There's simply too much money on the table to ignore.

My guess:

PS4: 2.3 million
Xbone: 1 million
PC: 600-700k

I'd probably say the PC is closer to 1 million, but close enough.

Congratulations for CDPR.

If weren't for Bloodborne, my personal GOTY, along with MH4U. Still the best multi by far, though.

My favorite open world RPG of all time and I haven't even gotten to Skellige yet. Fantastic experience so far. The Bloody Baron Questline alone is worth the price of admission.

4m x $60? That's $240m...

They need 16.66m copies to post $1b dollars... they probably will get there.

I bought the strategy guide too.

This is a wonderful game and the best I've played the last couple of years. Game is just so refreshing in every way. A real emphasis on the world, story and characters without boring the player to tears.

Well deserved.

I'm about 46-48 hours in and just about to begin the Ugly Baby quest line because I've been doing so many side quests. For me that really shows the immense effort that went into making the secondary quests and contracts so enjoyable and non repetitive.

Most beautiful game of all time imo on PC. I realize thats not true from a technical standpoint but the overall art and image are just astonishing. Even after over 50 hours with this game I find myself seeing vistas that just blow me away constantly

What game is technically better? I'm curious.

I'd say we'll deserved but after getting to novigrad last night I've had had way too many issues with cutscenes doubling characters or characters vibrating or even just parts of the city not loading properly.

Atleast we know they have money to fix the issues tho

This is going to vary from game to game. Some games just aren't built around consoles in mind, they are specifically targeting PC and would not sell very well if at all on consoles. This is good, IMHO, it's why the PC has such a strong library of unique games.

Also, on consoles you still need to pony up HUGE amounts of money for the sunk in costs of retail, and advertising. Not every developer cna afford that (and even CD Project Red needed the help of Microsoft to do this).

I hope they had enough consoles sales in that 4 million to justify the controversy they endured from some parts of the community. You always want to know your work was worth it in the end

I feel bad for Fallout 4, having to release after this. Witcher 3 sets a new bar. Best new game I've played in a long time.

Dont forget batman comes out in a week or 2. Isn't that open world as well? Not exactly the same genre but I bet there will be comparisons too

Sounds like pretty good sales to me. Well deserved; Wild Hunt is an incredible game - a classic.

I also want to commend CDPR for their "DLC" strategy. It's a refreshing and fun change from the cynical greed most publishers have. From all this, I suspect the Expansion Pass will be well worth the money.

They've already said the console versions enabled the PC version (or rather, the Witcher 3 in its current state) to be made at all. So, yeah, it was worth it.

Fully deserved. Right now it's only second to Baldur's gate 2 but i'm not done yet by a long shot. Could dethrone Baldur's gate 2 even.

I predicted back in the February NPD thread that TW3 would outsell Dragon Age, Halo MCC and FC4, but people thought I was crazy. Redeemed!

CDPR did a fantastic job. It's in my top 3 favorite games of all time.

Very well deserved. I'm having an absolute blast with this game. I'm even thinking about buying the season pass which is something I never do.

I can assure you they don't have a Return of Investment on consoles near the Witcher guys'.

Well obviously when you have huge publisher like EA they can't maintain Witcher 3 like Return of Investment with all of their titles or with whole console business. Still their console business makes them boatloads of money and pretty huge amount of that is trough ''evil'' DLC ( for example FIFA prints money trough ultimate team). Obviously I would prefer of course CDproject like approach from EA too but they are doing just fine with their current business model.

Hard decision... Shadows of mordor for $25 or witcher 3 for $42 at target...

Hard decision...

Witcher is definitely worth the price, finished Mordor, full completion, in 40 hours, I'm around 80 hours in Witcher 3 and still haven't even finished half of it. Story in the Witcher is better, voice acting, graphics are better. Arguably the only thing Mordor does better is combat. Not to say Mordor is a bad game, on the contrary it is one of my favorite games to come out recently but The Witcher 3 just trumps.

Looks like the prediction I made a while ago that the Witcher 3 will see a huge jump in sales compared to the first two is coming true. I think my exact words were it is going to be a Oblivion compared to Morrowind type jump.

My most regrettable game purchase in a very long time. I cannot stand clunky combat, it bugs me to no end.

This is the main reason I've not bought it yet. I really like the look of the game world, the audiovisual experience looks excellent and I'm pleased to hear the quest design is pretty amazing all around, but I can't stand clunky combat either. I hated it in Oblivion, it's the reason I passed on Skyrim and I may well end up skipping TW3 as well for the same reason.

W3 level of combat's clunkiness is nowhere near Oblivion\Skyrim though.

Fair points, especially the bolded.

It's unreasonable to expect every PC dev to be able to develop and market a console game by themselves (and without adequate funding).

As you saw with XCOM this doesn't always work out.
