Gotta finish watching them all (now just Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, Cat Returns, Cagliostro and Earthsea left) and then try to make a list, but its up there for sure.

If you're counting Cagliostro, you might as well throw in Hols: Prince of the Sun, both Panda! Go, Panda! films, Chie the Brat, and Gauche the Cellist - if you haven't already.

I actually havent even heard of those aside from Panda! So yeah, will add to my list. Hopefully I can find these somewhere.

Why stop there? You might as well add Future Boy Conan, Heidi Girl of the Alps, Marco: 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother and Anne of Green Gables as well!

I was sticking to their films, but sure, why not? Add in the first Lupin III series and Sherlock Hound too!

Forgot to mention it GAF. Some days ago, i made my presentation about studio ghibli, and some of their films, for an english course that i'm doing. After seeing the logo and knowing what i was going to talk about, a couple of persons were pleasantly surprised. The rest remained silent.

After that, the first thing i did was to ask the class who didn't knew about studio ghibli and their films. Almost everyone raised their hands. How depressing... :p

I hadn't started the presentation yet. One of then, when he saw that i was so disappointed that almost no one knew about it, asked me if "studio ghibli" had something to do with my family or something... lol

Then i started :p

I'm really hyped for the Castle of Cagliostro release. Figured I'd post these packaging pics from blu-ray.com. Hopefully not too off-topic since it isn't technically a Ghibli film:

Looks great!

I didn't know this was happening until seeing it on Amazon while ordering the Spirited Away BD (finally!). Excited to rewatch it after so many years.

Related, seeing Spirited Away in theaters next month for the first time, also exciting.

Just watched When Marnie was There. Not magical like other movies but still quite enjoyable :)

I actually really liked the change of setting. No planes or anti-war Miyazaki trope, no Takahata feels trip. Very charming and well-made. Anna was amazingly written, so sad that no one is taking about the film on GAF. :(

Oh my, minimalistic Ghibli Blu-Ray covers never disappoint:

If only we could get something remotely as classy. :(

So, what is the consensus on Poppy Hill? I have a chance to see it in a theater next week, but honestly am not sure it's worth the trip. Also worth noting, I'll probably be heading out every week in July to see a Ghibli film in a theater so it's not like I'll be missing out on Ghibli theater time.

I wouldn't miss it. Really nice slice of life film. Just a bunch of college kids trying to keep their house. It's an old place, but it means a lot to them. So they put in that work to keep it alive.

Got my copies of Spirited Away and The Cat Returns from Amazon, but my copy of The Cat Returns doesn't have a slip cover. Is this the norm?

Yeah, they don't always come with slipcovers when you order online. The only way to ensure that you get a slipcover is to pick your copy up in person at a brick and mortar store.

Mine didn't have a cover either. It's my first out of 10+ Ghibli movies to not have one, and it's going to bug me to no end.

You can call Disney and ask if they'll send you a replacement. (I'm pretty sure they will, but I think it costs like 2.99 or something like that)

Yeah the slipcover thing is weird and inconsistent. All of mine had them but then I bought Totoro and it randomly didn't have one. It does kinda bug me. Thankfully my copy of Spirited Away has one lol.

It's funny, totoro is the only one I got a slip cover for besides whisper of the heart. Nausicaa, mononoke, and wind rises all didn't come with one for me.

Lmao, so random. I bought Nausicaa long after its initial release and I got a slip for it. Same with Castle in the Sky and Howl's. Weird.

Watched Whisper of the Heart recently. What an absolutely adorable and heartwarming movie. I thought it would be more fantastical and less slice of life but I absolute enjoyed it to bits. Can't wait to get my hands of The Cat Returns and watch that again.

The incest thing turns out to be a red herring, if an odd one. I'd agree with Asbel that it has a nice sense of place and is worth watching.

If nothing else it was a huge improvement over Tales of Earthsea and it demonstrated that Goro might not turn out to be as bad a director as Hayao was a father after all.

Ok.. it's only taken me days but I'm starting to remember now that the protagonists thought they were related in the beginning I think but weren't in the end. I'll be honest, I'd completely forgotten about the romance subplot in this movie. Their struggle to win back their house was the only thing memorable to me.

I think Poppy Hill is worth seeing if you like the naturalistic Ghibli films, of which it's the most playful and upbeat. It has a couple of utterly superb scenes, the animation is jawdroppingly gorgeous, even by Ghibli standards, and even if the whole thing doesn't quite hang together, the lead character has enough about her to be a convincing lead. Certainly minor Ghibli, but not weak.

Haven't watched my Spirited Away blu yet, but it sounds like it's really really good technically. The blu-ray.com review is positively glowing.

I know Disney is just a corporation at the end of the day, but I love them for two things: Disneyland is still pretty fun and their Ghibli blu-rays are incredible lol. There are a lot of mediocre blu-ray releases out there and the Ghibli movies could have been added to that list, but whoever handles these at Disney seems to actually give a shit.

edit: is John Lasseter still involved with these releases? Love that dude. I know he worked on earlier ones, but he's pretty high up at Disney now so I don't know if he'd still be involved in a project like this.

Hot damn, the Castle of Cagliostro blu-ray is fantastic. The transfer itself is awesome, but it has some really nice extras. And I love that they included both dubs, especially the one with David Hayter as Lupin. I somehow had no idea he did this until I saw the bonus feature interview with him.

Also like that they have dub subtitles and subtitles for the Japanese track.

Aside from some missing film grain, Discotek did an incredible job. They easily outclassed Disney's releases with all of those crazy extras, dub and sub tracks.

AND THE CREDITS SEQUENCES ARE FULLY ANIMATED

Even though I pre-ordered months ago, Amazon still hasn't shipped my copy :/
It's a little weird on Amazon. It's only on sale for Amazon Prime members right now. I got my pre-order on Tuesday, but I have Prime so I dunno if that has anything to do with it? Unless you also have Prime in which case nevermind.

Good to hear. Haven't seen it before and I was afraid they'd cheap out.

Yeah, same here. Was a little hesitant since it isn't like a major known film compared to Miyazaki's later work (at least out West) but they did it up right. This is on par with Disney's excellent releases and maybe even better because of the subtitle / audio options and extra features.

I bet Lasseter has enough pull to make sure they get done right, especially considering Ghibli is the reason he does what he does.

Also, I have most of the Ghibli Disney DVDs, I didn't get slip covers with Castle in The Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, or Whisper of the Heart. :(

Not to shit on Disney, but Ghibli has been very controlling over their releases and does not allow Disney to just go in and mess with the transfers. Most of the Ghibli US releases have been close to the Japanese releases quality wise for this reason. I'm sure if Disney could, they would go in and scrub the shit out of the images and ruin them just like they have with some of their own releases.

That's good. Just the fact hat Disney agrees to release these without interfering is great. There are so many anime / animations blus out there that are lackluster.

Discotek also deserves props for this Cagliostro release. It's great.

Just in case anyone missed it, there is a "deal" on ghibli (including spirited away) movies via best buy and amazon for $20/piece:

http://slickdeals.net/f/7946731-miy...u-ray-dvd-more-19-99-free-in-store-pickup?v=1

Also, apparently the cheapest way to get the movies is through the disney movie club, and you can get most of miyazaki's stuff for like $10/disk. There is a link to a blu-ray.com thread in the slick deals link.
Thanks! Grabbed The Wind Rises to complete my Miyazaki collection. Still have yet to see it.

Also got Tale of Princess Kaguya to start on the non-Miyazaki Ghibli films. Though I know they vary in a quality a bit, so I probably won't get all of them.

Nice. I'll take a look at the Disney Movie Club. I have a $200 Amazon gift card, so I wanted to pay with that, but if the deal is even better through Disney, then I might just have to spend the money.

Is there a reason why some Ghibli films aren't put out by Disney in the West? I would have figured they had a deal for the studio's entire output, but that's not the case.

I believe that when they initially made their deal with Ghibli, the deal was for their entire catalog up to that point. Certain titles that didn't fit with Disney's brand were released through Miramax (Princess Mononoke) while others weren't released at all (Ocean Waves, Only Yesterday), I guess because they probably felt like they were too niche to bother with (along with content concerns).

After that, I think it on a case by case basis. The first film that they didn't bring over was From Up on Poppy Hill, which is a film set in contemporary 1960s Japan with little-to-no fantastical elements. I guess they didn't feel like it was a good fit. The Wind Rises also didn't seem like a very good fit, but Disney's John Lasseter is a huge Miyazaki fan and he made it work anyway (with Touchstone).

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was very different visually and had elements that Disney might not have wanted to associate themselves with, so they either just didn't care about it or GKids outbid them. Ditto Marnie.

That's a great cover except HEY DID YOU KNOW THAT IT'S OUT ON DVD AND BLU-RAY???? WE SHOULD MAKE THE TEXT REALLY BIG AT THE TOP SO PEOPLE KNOW!

Interesting. Seems like they've gone back on some of those. Like Mononoke is a Disney blu-ray for example.

edit: I guess Mononoke is the only difference. Maybe Disney wanted it simply because of its popularity in the West.
