I just started a new podcast about legal and business issues in the board game and video game industries. It's called Legal Moves, and it is based on a segment I had been doing on a popular board gaming podcast over the last year. There's a site up now. Recording episode 2 in an hour or so, and it'll be up by Wednesday.
In the next couple of days I am going to check this out.

Came back to this thread after a 2 week hiatus and love the commitment and content that fellow GAFers have put into this OT. Thanks for initiating this OT More_Badass! Because of your efforts, I was able to discover a new and interesting film podcast, F This Movie.

Thanks!

If Kermode and Mayo's film review (BBC) isn't added to the film section in the OP I can't take this thread seriously...

However, it's a great thread idea, have been looking for new stuff to listen to so will check some of these out.

I absolutely love The Adventure Zone. The McElroys playing D&D... What could go wrong? It is a fantastic mix of humor, storytelling, and shenanigans wrapped up in a fairly true game of D&D.

I only wish it was a weekly podcast, I can't get enough.

Stuff You Should Know, My Brother My Brother And Me, and the Beast/Bombcast are my other go to podcasts.

Has anybody started a podcast before? What did you use to host your media? I'm thinking about using Soundcloud.

Soundcloud is junk if you don't pay to use their unlimited service and they're already a so-so music playing service.

Archive.org is a free option and their speeds are decent enough for beginning podcasts to deal with. It's got unlimited storage, extremely hands-off in content scanning, and direct linking.

Pair that with a free Wordpress.com site, Feedburner to roll an RSS feed, and PodTrac to get analytics and you've got 90% of Soundcloud's podcasting features for free. Hell, you can get away without PodTrac and still get a subscriber count from FeedBurner.

I gradually stopped listening to Mysterious Universe. Great hosts, but the topics went more and more into science-fiction/future tech whereas I'm more interested in mysteries and supernatural stuff.

What's wrong with the Soundcloud basic service?

More people should listen to the Film Junk podcast. I can't stand overproduced film and tv review podcasts, I like mine laid back. Sean, Jay, and Frank have great rapport and hilarious arguments about all sorts of pedantic film geek minutia. They're the only film podcast I like anymore. They're the Giant Bomb of film for me(loooong episodes too).

You don't get near enough time. Assuming you have even a 30 minute show, that's only 12 episodes on the paid Pro account (half that on free). Plus, with Soundcloud's ambiguous stance on advertising, they could potentially (in the future) run an ad before your show that doesn't go to you. Soundcloud also has some rudimentary music-detection tech that may be an issue if your show features copyrighted music.

That's all a non-issue if you roll your own free, basic framework and you get expandability should you decide you want to create a larger site around your work.

Just gave this a listen and I really enjoyed it. Great job, man!

It was nice to hear some knowledgeable talk about the business/legal side of the game industries. Looking forward to episode 2!

Crossposting from another podcast-related thread.

Any recommendations for [a podcast app] for someone stuck in iOS 7.1.2? The default podcast app sucks so much ass..

I tried Stitcher and it was okay, but apparently the free version doesn't let you add your own RSSs... Which sucks.

Just wanted to let you know I am an avid listener to Diamond Club shows, I greatly appreciate your work and help. Its extremely noticeable the amount of work you put in, and it has made the shows better in my opinion. Keep up the work yo <>.

I've listened to the first 4 episodes of The Black Tapes and I'm pleasantly surprised. If I had to criticize it, the degree to which it tries to copy Serial detracts from the experience; I don't want to feel like I'm listening to a parody right down to the theme song ripoff - specially when I'm supposed to be getting creeped out - the show is good enough to stand on its own feet without the needless and sometimes tacky Serial callbacks.

The acting is also a little stiff. Maybe I'm too used to Welcome to Night Vale levels of acting, but they do have to improve a bit before I stop feeling like they're reading from a script.

The cases are great though and the general setup ties the whole thing together neatly, even if the plot twists and reactions from people are cliched sometimes (dramatic pauses EVERYWHERE). Regardless, I'm really enjoying it and would recommend it to any fan of paranormal fiction.

Legacy Music Hour is awesome.

Just wanted to pop in again and say, yes, Legacy Music Hour is so completely awesome .:D Just a straight hour of game music with no interruptions or hosts talking endlessly. It's just what I've wanted for a gaming music podcast! Not that I dislike VGMpire (they're still gonna be on the rotation), I like what they do too, just that Legacy Music Hour's closer to what I was originally looking for. I'm gonna download their whole backlog when I get home today (I only do that with podcasts I reeeeally love, Retronauts was the only other one thus far).

Anyone that likes gaming music has to give this one a go.

Man, I really want to like The Last Podcast on the Left but I can't stand the hosts. They're so goofy and no where near funny enough to pull it off. The 'jokes' just distract from the subject matter so much for me.

Is there anything similar but without the humour attempts?

Just checked out Goosebuds after reading through that thread loaded with nostalgia about Goosebumps books.

It's pretty good so far, kinda disappointed though that it doesn't seem to have a very regular schedule as they've only done 7 episodes in a whole year.

I've gone through 26 episodes of Sword and Scale and I'm torn on it. There aren't too many shows that get as in-depth as they do into the world of True Crime, which I appreciate. That said, there's something a little creepy about how the material is presented. It's a little cynical and leans too much towards entertaining. It's an odd feeling. There are times when I really disagree with some of the commentary that the host/narrator intrudes with as they present audio from 911 calls or police interrogations. They'll offer odd observations or even off-handed jokes meant to pass judgment.

There is some DARK freaking subject matter on this podcast. One really disturbing episode about a supposedly christian puppeteer that was actually a cannibal pedophile was too much for me to listen to. They try to re-enact transcripts with computer-generated voices to tell the story, but then in the VERY NEXT EPISODE as the narrator is congratulating himself on how he approached the material, he jokes with a friend about the same material in a way that I had to turn the radio off.

Anyway, I recommend the podcast for people that want something that tackles true crime with a sort of morbid fearlessness. That said, the host seems like the type of person that one might expect would be borne from chasing this type of material for years. A sort of dispassionate cynical, borderline asshole personality that tackles material most won't touch. CRIMINAL is an alternative podcast with a much lighter touch that might appeal to some, too.

LORE is fun if you're into horror and legend. The narrator has a fantastic voice and seems a great writer, so the episodes are highly entertaining (i've not read his novels yet). So far the Werewolf episode is the best.

The NPR block of podcasts are all exceptional: Serial, This American Life, Planet Money (which doesn't get nearly enough love), Invisibilia (still finding its voice), Mystery Show, and Snap Judgment.

REVEAL, the social conscious podcast about social justice is solid and a natural fit for those that enjoy This American Life when it centers around inner city topics. APM Marketplace is hard financial news told narratively, which is awesome. It's what I modeled my old, failed, gaming podcast around and is definitely worth a listen.

REPLY ALL, and offshoot of TL:DR podcast, is REALLY hit or miss. The Start-Up podcast is unfocused and tough to listen to in Season Two.

...just going through the huge list of podcast I listen to on a regular basis...

Legacy Music Hour is awesome. I'd definitely recommend it. If you like it, check out Top Score as well - it's like LMH but it's run by a branch of NPR and centers more on the music/theory aspect of it. The host is great.
Turbo Game Club is a fun one. It's a game-of-the-month club podcast. It starts out rough, but really picks up. The Lion King, Earthbound, Beyond Good & Evil, and the Music ones are my favorite.

Thank you for these posts. I have been looking for more podcasts with video game music.

I listened to a few episodes of Super Marcato Bros. Video Game Music Podcast, they are good, and bring some great music. I have also tried Sound of Play. But they seem to talk a lot.

I'm using Buzzsprout. I went over the free time limit, though, and just paid them. Next month I'll be more careful.

But thanks so much. I use an audio-technica atr2100 USB. Works pretty well!

Hmm, I'll have to give Super Marcato Bros. a try. :3 I love the music podcasts the most (probably because I don't have to pay as much attention during them, haha), so I'm trying to fill out my list with more musical stuff. On the non-gaming side I was also going to give NPR's Classical 101 a try (but I don't know how much of it is actual music), since that seems like it'd be something great to listen to at work.

Mini-update: I do enjoy NPR's 'Story of the Day' overall, but it's sort of hard to recommend them as podcast material. The episodes rarely go above 5 minutes long, but they do update everyday and all that. But, they are more like radio snippets (er, I guess not like, they *are*) than actual podcasts. Also I think I like Top Score, but I can't tell. :p It's interesting, at least. It'll stay on the rotation for now, haha.

I agree with you a lot about the host. 95% of the time, I think he provides interesting insight, but the other 5% of the time his biases show through. That snippet after the pedophilia/cannibalism episode was definitely a mis-judgment and went on far too long. Although, on later episodes he has been a bit more compassionate towards some of the people in his stories. I think he's probably done a bit more research about 911 calls (or been told by people) as he's had more positive comments regarding them.

That said, I couldn't help but laugh at his big "is humanity good or evil?" podcast. On the one hand, it was awesome that he'd been asking that question to all his guests from the beginning. It showed a lot of foresight. On the other hand, he was surprised almost everyone leaned on the side of "good" and seemed to pressure them a bit to change their answer. When almost no one answered "evil," he closed out that episode with his own thoughts, which of course, was "evil." Overall, I think he's backed away from the overly dramatic reads (and his interviews continue to be really interesting and on point. I really enjoy how he doesn't mind probing a bit and getting more depth than, say, nightly news would).

There is some really dark subject matter and I wish he would do a better job telling the audience when the documented audio would include the sounds of the actual murder. He does this in one home-defense case (also snippets of two guys, one hammer) and I was destroyed for a day or two. I love the podcast, but the host doesn't seem to understand people very well.

I love the show, and I'll keep listening, but I do wish that he'd be a bit more considerate at times.

Top Score has a few less-interesting episodes, but then there are some that are just amazing. My favorites were with the composers of Halo, Diablo/Torchlight, and then my all time favorite was the one with the composer of Ori & the Blind Forest.

Holy shit, Sword and Scale is intense. This is crazy. I was listening while riding my bike and it was creeping me out. Just finished the first ep. I finished all of Lore at work. ~20 minute episodes are too short. SaS is what I want.

You don't sound like a muppet at all. You're just not used to hearing your own voice from an external source. It's okay, everyone dislikes their own voice at first. Over time you'll learn to listen to it with an objective ear. You might even start to appreciate it!

I've never had any experience with dynamic microphones such as your ATR2100 (mine is a condenser mic, much better for vocal clarity and accuracy but much more sensitive), but I know they're good at suppressing background noise, and I don't hear any when you speak. What's your recording environment?

MOVIE/FILM/TV
You really need to include:
The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith
KCRW's The Treatment
KCRW's The Business
I Was There Too

Those are podcasts ABOUT movies/TV..not people giving their worthless opinion on them.

If you want worthless opinions..
Hollywood Prospectus. - Andy Greenwald always has a good take on TV shows. And his buddy, Chris..well..he looks like Corky from Life Goes on.

Also...
In sports, not including The L.A.W. feed isnt cool. Best wrestling podcast(s).

I completely agree, the first 5 episodes started to present an in-depth analysis of criminals and the things they do. By episode 20, it turned into murder porn...it made me feel sick to be honest, I had to stop listening.

I already recommended it in the last thread, but FantasyFiction ist one of the only podcasts I regularly too. (found them after watching Continueshow on youtube... kinda related I guess)

I think the description on their website says it all.

"Fantasy Fiction is a podcast where two friends read stories to each other and laugh like fools."

It is pretty much... stoner-fantasy.

Thought of another one to mention quick since I don't think many people have heard it.

The Twilight Highlight Zone. A couple of Game Informer editors took it upon themselves to watch every episode of the original Twilight Zone series. They're about 30-40 minutes on average and they cover a handful of episodes in each one while also rating them. At the end of each season they held an awards episode where they would dole out stupid made-up awards for different episodes or characters.

I will admit though, it is kind of a pain to find all of their episodes since iTunes doesn't seem to have all of them on their page, though it could just be my inexperience with iTunes. You can definitely find them all for download still though on the GI website, this link to one of their last episodes includes links to every episode they did as well.

It's really a fun one to listen to. I've never watched the Twilight Zone, but I've listened to that whole podcast multiple times now and feel like I know all about that show.

Thanks for the Twilight Highlight Zone recommendation! I listened to about 10 episodes so far, love it.

OP, you should totally add You Made It Weird to the comedy section. Pete Holmes is not only a hilarious comic, but he's very insightful. I've learned a lot about how to approach life from his podcast. Definitely worth a listen IMO.

Yeah, this is another comedian hosted podcast where he gets a lot of good guests. He even got Dave Coulier! His latest one with Jimmy Kimmel was great. They both make fun Adam Carolla and do his voice.

I started listening to the Fighter and the Kid podcast recently and it is a lot better than I thought. Brendan and Brian are funnier than I thought it would be. Same thing happened when I listened to the Rogan experience with Marc Maron and got into that one. I assumed it would be all fight talk and I am not a big mma fan but it really isn't. Brendan is a lot more entertaining than I thought a fighter would be.

Lore has led me to look for something like the episodes "Echoes" or "The Castle", except that's like every episode. Less mythology, more real/unexplained/creepiness/messed up stuff. Any suggestions?

Hey Guys,

I actually recently started my first podcast and the first episode has just gone live on iTunes. It is a gaming podcast with a similar theme to the one used in the BBC show "Desert Island Discs", it centers around my guests choosing what eight games would they take with them to a deserted island, if they could only play those games for the rest of their days.

It is called - "Final Games" and my first episode features Pete Donaldson one of the members of the popular Soccer podcast "Football Ramble".

Don't know if it's been posted, but the entire Laser Time network is fantastic.

Cape Crisis for comics
Cheap Popcast for wrastlin'
Vidja Game Apocalypse for gaming
Laser Time for all kinds of stuff
VGEmpire for video game music podcast

All great all the time.

Laser Time was a spin off of the (at the time) popular podcast TalkRadar. Made by the original members.

They should be more popular..
