Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So my old Sony Bravia broke, and I'm looking for another good ol' "dumb" TV (1080, around 40').

Thing is... I'm pretty broke these days. I must admit I'm tempted by cheap TVs like the "Insignia" brand...

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=3ee26330b02f5f22deb21ec4c2ece942en02

Would that be a huge mistake?

It's good enough. They essentially use LG parts on the inside. In this size it doesn't really mater. The only good 43" or under TV these days is the XBR43X830C, a 4K 120HZ TV. A decent "cheap" TV would be a Vizio maybe. And smart TV usually is a model series higher by brand, so you're not only getting features, but image quality too. Why not finance it? You'll be stuck with it for years, don't settle.. Your last one was good if it was a Bravia.

Is Vizio actually worth buying? I know they've stepped up there game in recent years but I'm so skeptical. I'm looking for a 65' to 75' 4K TV for a decent price but feel like I need to go Samsung or Sony.

They're falsely advertising that they sell a full array TV. Their M series is fine, I'd buy it over a non S series Samsung. Sony still easily beats all competition. About to upgrade my XBR55X850B to a XBR65X930C. HDR compliant partial array..so excited.

well not really...yet

still cheap crap. youre better off with a smaller sony or samsung than a larger vizio

Ah, goddamit. I'm getting very infrequent (every 3 days or so) HDMI dropouts on my Sony W8 TV/Onkyo 828 receiver. I'm suspecting it's the screen as the amp doesn't seem to lose signal, the display on the amp doesn't change or flash and the audio remains constant. Curiously it's been happening since around the last firmware was released for the TV about 3 weeks ago. Happens on both my PC and PS4. Amp hasn't had a firmware update for ages.

Currently trialling a new HDMI cable from the amp to the TV. Any suggestions where to go next? Bypassing the amp is probably a good start.

Our W8 was doing this too, and I suspect it was the software update - just mentioning it as we tried the hdmi cable and removing the amp etc and it still happened. I think they dropped a dud firmware. The Sony has now been refunded and we're waiting on delivery of a new LG tomorrow. Woo!

Bugger. Thanks for letting me know anyway. I've emailed support but that's obviously going to be futile.

So, is there a TV with good picture/black levels/colors, 4k res, hdmi 2.0, low input lag, 60"+ for under 2000 dollars?

Has anyone bought the Samsung 7100?

I'd be curious to hear how it is for gaming. I think that it pretty much meets your criteria. The 60" is available for $1799 now at best buy. I'm seriously considering buying it.

It's time to change my old Sharp to something more modern.
From what I was in stores I like the picture of Samsung h6400 series, how they are for gaming? I understud that Sony w8 is a better choice, but at retailers I've trust they much expensive than Samsung

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I found a Samsung 40' EH5000 for the pretty affordable price of $400 (CAD). From what I read, it sounds better than pretty much anything else I could get for that price, and I'm tempted to pull the trigger...

Any opinion from the experts here?

I'm interested in the X930c, it apparently has an input lag of 36ms. My current TV is 20ms.

I know everyone is different but am I likely to notice this increase?

Seeking very specific TV suggestions..
Hey, I've been rocking a Panasonic Viera TH-50PX80U since about 2008. I honestly love Plasma TVs, they look absolutely fantastic. However I have some issues...

1. 1366 x 768 resolution. Even 720p would be better. I've gotten an XRGB mini recently and its annoying that Im using this odd resolution, huge pain in the ass.
2. Lack of DVI, or VGA. Small complaint but it would be nice to have. Not a huge deal.
3. Permanent Overscan, absolutely no 1:1 pixel mapping mode! WORST!

So this TV is pretty much unusable for PC gaming, even if I set it to the native resolution it still cuts off areas. And dear god I want to go to 1080p land. Im very open to hunting for the right TV, so feel free to suggest TVs that arent on the market anymore. (Id have to get on Ebay or something.) Production level displays are fine too, I've seen those suggested before. (AKA displays not intended for consumer use.) Heres my desired features...

1. 1080p resolution. 4K isn't wanted or desired.
2. 1:1 pixel mapping, no overscan. I want to be able to do PC gaming!
3. Plasma, or something as good. I really dont want to give up the contrast ratio / colors / black levels.
4. No smart features desired. These usually are very bloated / crap compared to using my PS3.

Things Id have hooked up:
PC hooked up via HDMI
Gamecube via Component Cables into XRGB Mini
NES / SNES / GEN via RGB into XRGB Mini
PS3 via HDMI
Wii U via HDMI

I was checking out that site earlier today and noticed they rate tvs without price in mind so as a result, non-expensive tvs get hammered. The TV I was watching in particular was that Sony XBR-49X830C

I am looking for a TV to play PS4 games on, use my PC (mostly non gaming), and is no more than a $1,000. Help me GAF!

Why can't one of these manufacturers make a DUMB tv??

I bet 90% of the input lag comes from all the damn software on these new TVs. I don't need webOS or youtube/Netflix/prime/HBOgo/hulu/etc/etc/etc built into my TV. My console does all of that just fine (and so do computers for that matter).

If they would just get rid of all the CRAP we don't really need on these TVs they'd be a bit cheaper (at least) and probably have lower latency.

I went to best buy the other day shopping around and asked if they had ANY TVs without all this shit on them, and was pointed to a dusty old corner with some 32" models.

/sigh

That software isn't what causes input lag mate. Typically image processing and such. Even better, many of these TVs improve input lag. My last firmware update on my Samsung HU9000 halved the input lag.

I don't think price should ever be considered in a review. It's extremely subjective and one of the reasons I don't like the Wirecutter.

It's best to put the information out there with only facts and let the consumer decide if it's worth the price.

That Sony model in particular deserves it. This one would be way better and the 50" around somewhere and cheaper -

I want this set but the lag is a worry. Does input lag often get reduced post release?

Here's the thing about the input lag on that set. It's measured with the local dimming on, while the samsung flagship has the local dimming off in game mode. I'm wondering if you're able to turn it off and get a lower reading, or if it's locked on. I can check next saturday when I'm around that TV. If it's locked on that's something they could fix with a firmware update.

I guess there is no chance of G SYNC on a tv any time soon is there? I'm coming up on 5 years with my Panasonic VT25 50" plasma, and there just doesn't seem to be anything worth upgrading to. I have 2x 970's, PS4, and WiiU via an hdmi 1.4 receiver running to the set.

There is tons of cool monitor tech these days, but the screen size is a turn off. I guess VR will be cool, but I'm sure it will be a while before it's really worth it. I really wish I could do 1080p60 3D vision on my current set up but it's limited to 1080p24 or 720p60.

My dream set would be an OLED (since plasma is dead) with 4K, 3D, G SYNC, and 120 hz. I would pay up to 3K for this television.

What about this Samsung 4K TV? This got better reviews than that Sony TV we were discussing. I sacrifice 120 Hz, 3D, and pay about $100 in exchange for 4K @ 50 inches. I could care less for 3D and 120 Hz won't matter for console gaming though. Input lag is 26.5ms which is still good for gaming.

I bought the Samsung JU7100 a few days ago ad I can't seem to get the picture quality to be as good as it should be. I have it set to game mode right now if that matters. The picture quality just seems to grainy. Any tips would be helpful.

Generally speaking Samsung game mode dims the picture a lot. That why I've stuck with Sony TV as I can put it in game mode and still have the exact same picture but with less input lag. I just bought a kdl55w700b. I just couldn't justify double the price to go up to 4k with so little supporting it and I'm not a big fan of up scaling

The problem is that you bought a Samsung, Milk.

Didn't think choosing a TV would be this hard lol. You guys don't seem to think Samsung is good for gaming but RTINGS does with testing to back it up. Well at least for the 2015 models. I usually trust customers before reviewers but these guys seem very legit.

Anyone got one of the new Sony TV's? Looking at the 43" W805C range. 43" is a odd size so it might mean a different panel from the other sizes (they've done this in the past).

Sony had really good input lag ratings last year, wondered if that has continued this year.

Talking about TV modes. On my current Samsung, which the display happened to go bad this weekend, I used to play on PC mode and there was an option to turn on game mode at the same time. The picture would take a hit so I left it off. Have they improved on any of this in the new models?

I wanted to buy a Sony this time since I only had my Samsung for almost 3 years before it crapped out on me, but the 2015 Samsung models seem to be killing the competition as opposed to last year's models from Sony.

This is mostly during movies. Playing games its fine but I watched Star Trek on bluray and the picture quality kinda sucked and I know that that movie is supposed to look great. I tried taking it off game mode and was only able to get it to go from grainy to blurry. Think one of those calibration blurays would help?

Change to PC mode or turn off all those post-filtering settings.

$3k? lol sets that dont have even half of those features cost twice as much as that.

A 1080p OLED at 60hz costs nearly that right now....

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhitttttttttttttttttt

i want this tv very bad. i can afford it but everyone is telling me to hold off for the 4k model. pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. congrats

also is it possible to hang the curved tv on a wall ?

The 4K model costs too much and I don't see enough content to justify for me. The lack of HDR is the bigger issue but I still think the 1080p oled is the best TV at ~2k price range.

AAFES had the 55EC9300 for $2000 but I'm hoping for a lower price during prime day so I can price match with them (no tax or shipping with AAFES).

Otherwise they have the UN55JS9000 for $2K currently and I might settle for it.
