Dead Island 2 developer Yager dropped by Deep Silver

I'm wondering if the project just got too big for Yager?

Who else are they going to give this project to? There's not that many indies that can handle a game of this scale.

One year ago at Gamescom it was looking really rough. But what really worried me was the direction they were taking the franchise to, with no story whatsoever, forced multiplayer and that silly over the top tone.

Welp that explains the no show at E3.

I think it's the right decision to go back and rework the game after seeing Dying Light improve on the formula, but I wonder what led to the decision to completely part ways with Yager.

Techland. A twist M. Night Shyamalan would be proud of.

Dead Island 2 looked and sounded like garbage, I hope this means they'll go back to the drawing in some respects and not have the game be an endless stream of repetitive missions with no end in sight.

I'm not at all surprised by this. I was able to play it at an expo last year, and it was terrible in every way possible.

I just remembered that Escape Dead Island pre-purchasers were given a registration key for the Dead Island 2 beta. Needless to say, that's still yet to kick off. I don't think I've received a single follow-up e-mail.

Man this must have been a real stinker....

Kind of a shame, the first one seemed to have some good ideas in it.

I think Dying Light doing as well as it did both critically and commercially hurt the prospects of Dead Island 2. Going back to that exact same style of game without the dynamic movement system would have felt like a step backwards.

Bet Dying Light has something to do with this change.

That game was a blast!

Dying Light reminded me why I'm a gamer. Hopefully Dead Island 2 comes out at some point and is equal to DL.

Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of resources for Dead Island 2 just get put towards a sequel to Dying Light.

What resources? Different publisher and developer.

I hated the idea of no story though, or at least no end to the story, that seemed like a really shitty idea to me.

Wow, did anyone even hint at development trouble with this game other than it not showing at E3?

The game has been in product for how long? 1.5 years? This is a big thing.

Techland (Dead Island/Dying Light developer) is independent

Deep Silver is a publisher and the owner of Dead Island, but they have nothing to do with Dying Light which was published by Warner

I still want to understand what Yager were doing between 2005 and 2012. Surely Spec Ops didn't take 7 years to develop?

They were developing a Contra reboot for Konami, likely the one teased at E3 a few years back. I don't think that was in development very long, though.

Damn second dev deep silver has dropped in a year. Not looking good for them. (Crytek with Homefront being the first)

First the delay now this. I hope no one looses their job over there

Now how awesome (and ironic) would be if they asked Techland to take on this project?

ooooh. Yager did Spec Ops? Well that explains a lot. Spec Ops was fucking garbage.

Hopefully no-one is fired over this though.

Nah bruh
I really like that game

I think some of you might be putting too much stock in Dying Light.

I think it's much more likely that given Yager's last game and how long and how many delays and revisions it took them to make a shooter with ultimately mediocre shooting mechanics, that it's possible Yager just wholesale dropped the ball.

Not exactly. Crytek killed off Crytek UK when it agreed to sell the Homefront IP due to its financial woes and Deep Silver formed a replacement studio using some former staff.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Yeah, I'm going to echo the sentiment that this doesn't sound good at all. It's hard to put a good spin on it. Really wondering if development was going that poorly.
