IGN: The SEGA Rally reboot that nobody bought

Having worked on this game, it was quite a nice surprise to wake up this morning to see an article written about it! Some very happy and sad memories (for obvious reasons) about that time in my life.

Some quotes

SEGA Rally Revo was created by SEGA Racing Studio, a new British development house that was formed in 2005 for the sole purpose of creating quality racing games for SEGA. It was an attempt to put renewed emphasis on what had been a core part of SEGA’s stable in the past, but also to pass the torch to a Western perspective. Could a studio boasting members from outfits like Codemasters and Criterion help SEGA regain relevance in the racing oeuvre?

Revo has another technical wow factor, and that’s deformable terrain. The cars carve out paths in the dirt, mud and snow, which – MotorStorm aside – was a pretty mindblowing effect at the time and still looks good today. It also has a direct impact on gameplay, as sticking to the ruts theoretically means you have more traction and are thus faster.

SEGA Rally Revo was a reboot done (mostly) right. It certainly did a fantastic job capturing the fluid, gloriously fast and slippery handling players associated with the series, but at the same time injected some cool tech and superb art direction to really make it leap off the screen. If you’re an arcade racing fan – or a fan of SEGA Rally – do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of this on PS3 or 360 if you see it for cheap. It holds up remarkably well.

Great game, I enjoyed playing through this. It's sad it didn't sell....
Didn't they do a really cheap digital version of it a while ago on PSN?
Edit: Seems the digital version was a spin-off?

I honestly never heard of it, and I loved Sega Rally to bits. Huh.
Will definitely see if I can nab this now though.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Y'know, when I built a new computer back in 2007, this was one of the games I was completely stoked to go play.

I never actually bought the thing. Now I kinda want to go back and correct this.

loved the demo but never could find a copy on ps3, might have to check it out before its gone for good... er? One of those games I wanted but never got around to.

I liked it a lot, but I'm not a fan of rally style racing. Still, it was pretty excellent for what it was.

People didn't buy arcade racers last generation sadly. It's the reason they're so rare this generation.

did it ever come out on PC?

I loved Sega Rally in the arcade and on the dreamcast. Not as much as Daytona, but close. I'd like to apologise to the OP for ignoring this, assuming it was a cheap cash-in at the time.

If it isn't out on PC and comes to XB1 as part of their 360 BC I'll see if I can find a copy somewhere

Yeah it came out on PC. It required a fairly hefty rig at the time!

I gifted it to my brother (had no way to play it myself) and later bought the PSN arcade version which is based on this (IIRC) when I got a PS3 myself.

Wonderful game and a real shame it bombed.

I have this game, I liked it.

But for me, rhe big bews in this article is: How in the world did I not know there was a Sega Rally 3?? And that it came out on XBL?

It was a great game but the handling wasn't Sega Rally at all. It's a pity it bombed because that killed any chance of more arcades from Sega.

I bought Sega Rally day one and absolutely adored it, enough to unlock everything (including the sweet Hot Wheels bonus car) and get all but 1 achievement (that silly host 100 matches online one). It was a beauty to look at, a joy to play and nailed the atmosphere of Sega Rally in a way that I didn't even think Sega Rally 2 did. Absolutely shameful that Sega shut down such a talented studio immediately when they did nothing to advertise the game, I would have loved to see their take on Daytona USA, Scud Race or Sega Touring Car Championship.

Last gen SEGA was absolutely fantastic at making and publising many great games.
They were absolutely abysmal of making people aware of this fact.

Interestingly, the spin-off was different from the arcade version. It contained tracks from the console version of the game, not the arcade version. The arcade version had tweaked tracks and (from memory) some heavy revisions on Alpine. One of the other tracks was Lakeside, which was originally intended as a DLC track on the original game, but I think under a new theme, Coastal, that never came to be. It was converted to be Lakeside so it matched the hidden track of the original SR game that had a track of the same name. Also, the original SR Desert track was converted into SR3.

I have the PSN version on PS3. I love the redone original Sega Rally track but couldnt get a grip on the handling as it is different to SR1 and SR2.

I would kill for a HD remake/PSN version of the originals SR1 and SR2 similar to Outrun HD.

To be honest (and I realize you worked on this Kenny so hopefully this is constructive), for me the game lacked most of what made the original games special and felt like a more by the numbers experience. The characteristic track design, handling, music, sega feel - was all just kind of gone. It was a fine game in its own right but it didn't seem like part of the sega rally franchise to me.

Would love to see an AM2 led Sega Rally 3 some day though that's asking a lot of modern sega - basically to be a reasonable company.

Yeah, it was a great game. I was reminded of it when I played Spintires recently and figured I'd grab it off Steam. Nope, not on there :(

I'd be OK if it's as good as the Daytona PS3 release.

I'm happy to disagree :)

It actually felt like the exact sequel I'd been waiting for, plus the handling through the track deformations was brilliant.

The sound of the mud flicking up and hitting the car was ace too!

All in all, loved it. And Sega Rally Arcade too!

Never heard of this and I loved Sega Rally Championship back in the day on PC.

/edit: Can't find the PC version on Amazon, so bothering now seems too late.

I freaking loved this game. Track Deformation is the one feature I really wish would've taken off. Are there any other games that do it?

I bought it on 360 when it originally came out - great game, although there was one track that always drove me nuts as I kept screwing up the hairpins. I always wanted to 1000 point it, but gave up at some point.

I should dig it out and see how it holds up now.

The XBLA release was a pale shadow of Revo.

Spintires, although it's not a racing game in any way. It has fantastic terrain deformation, though, which is good as that's basically it's main selling point.

An arcade game can't have that big of a scope in this day and age and probably even more so back then! Not sure if the XBLA version did any better? The market just isn't there and gamers demand more out of their games.

I personal love these type of arcade titles and really miss the classic Sega racing games! It would be nice to see so smaller indie teams work on similar titles but even then they re-playability of them would be classed as quite small these days so the sales probably fall off a cliff after the first week.

It would make for the perfect "I'll get it on Steam for 75% off" type of game. But you can't make a game of that size for £3-5 a sale :(

Guessing the only way that would maybe be profitable would be F2P with cosmetic cars and such plus a base game that covered Rally, Street, Boats and Circuit all in one. Even then the gameplay would have to be incredibly tight for people to stay invested and I suppose Trackmania is kinda scratching that itch for most time trial hooligans.

There was a SEGA Rally 3 by the same studio that made Revo for the arcade. Revo was based on that and then the actual SEGA Rally 3 that was on arcades was released on PSN/XBLA which I am only learning now.

WHY DID NO-ONE TELL ME.

I had a lot of fun with that one, still in the collection and about ready for a revisit. Every racing game has a favorite car in it that isn't commonly seen, and in this case iirc it was the Lancia ECV looking at pictures (hella fast and red though for some reason memory had it as a Quattro variant...been a while).

I had only one complaint about that game... the competition with 6 cars. For me it was not a great idea, especially if you grew up with the championship mode with 15 cars and 4 consecutive tracks. However, SEGA Rally 3 on arcade is my second favourite SEGA Rally game after the first one.

The "core" experience of a SEGA Rally game or even any other SEGA arcade racer is 60fps and colors that really pop. I remember playing the demo and even though the game was decent it just didn't feel like SEGA Rally at all, especially the 30fps.

I mean imagine if Nintendo was making a reboot of F-Zero and got a Western dev and the game lost it's esthetics and ran at 30fps. I don't think many people would go for it.

First demo I ever downloaded on my new broadband connection

I remember the demo was 600MB for some stupid reason

Bought it soon after that demo too.

I got to be honest, I was excited for a reboot of a great franchise like sega rally, but the demo made me hate the game there was something dull on it, I can't pinpoint what
