Indie Games 2015 [July] Now Voting - Post 280!

I was lucky enough this weekend to get offered some hands on experience working PR for a pretty big music festival in the UK.

Turns out doing PR is about being really nice to people, telling people how great they are and drinking a lot of alcohol.

Still - an amazing experience, will look nice on the old CV as well. I've got some screenshot saturday stuff and impressions to post in here when I get back, still a couple of hours on the train left.

What have you guys been playing this weekend? Come on, fill me in!
Sounds interesting!

Been playing Starship Rubicon and Caves of Qud

Video actually was posted in May, but I just saw it today

Why I’m Letting Heat Signature Get Bigger
"Here is a video blog about that, and how I’m changing how I think about working on it."

I thought it was a very insightful video about scope, managment, the reality of game design, of adding and/or removing features. Sometimes, reading comments on GAF and elsewhere, you get the sense that some people don't have an idea of what game development is like or entails, and that's why videos like this are important and, IMO, fascinating

That was really interesting, thanks for posting. Tom Francis is super interesting to listen to.

This game severely needs performance improvements. If that game runs significantly worse than skyrim, their optimization is fucked up.

Damn that sucks to hear! The steam user reviews didn't mention too much of it when I browsed through them, maybe I wasn't paying enough attention.

In other news Rocket League has taken over my life.

Well, no clue about others, just speaking from my own experience. I couldnt get this game to run smoothly in any way on a notebook that can run Skyrim on low-medium settings just fine.

I don't think it's fair to compare Grav performance to Skyrim. The minimum system requirements for both are very far apart.

My point is that they shouldnt differ that much. I dont really see why I shouldnt be able to play this game at least on the lowest settings somewhat decently.

This might be a bold statement, but That Which Sleeps is shaping up to be one of the deepest and complex grand strategy games I've seen

Here's some stuff from the latest KS update
h5KtUFG.jpg

The intent of the screen is to allow any important event or status to be properly highlighted and draw the eye to what is occurring. Ignoring that disclaimer let's talk about what you're seeing. The Planes consist of the Underworld, the Dreamlands, and five Middle Planes. Gods only exist in the five middle planes, and the Underworld and the Dreamlands are not only home to Old Ones but they also have multiple distinct locations that Heroes/Agents can visit, though often with great difficulty.
---
The five Middle Planes are the homes of the gods. Each of these planes has unique abilities associated with it as well as thematic to the gods that live there. These planes can be destroyed, and if each is destroyed this has serious repercussions on the game - for instance Azlan cannot complete his awakening ritual without a plane connecting to the Underworld, the AI is aware of this and can, with sufficient desperation, attempt to "Nuke the Heavens".

Gods have a variety of functions in the world depending on their personalities. Some Gods will do nothing and watch as their followers are pushed aside, others are quick to rise to any affront to their power.
Gods can spawn divine quests, create artifacts, send instructions to their worshipers, or perform miracles (when prompted by a priest). Miracles are much like rituals though they require faith to be cast as well as gathered.

This looks fun

APT - August (PC, Mac, Linux)

Using a combination of your Test Suit abilities, interact with and manipulate trial elements to reach the goal door. Refine your skills and earn ranks based on time then post times against your friends on the intergrated Steam Leaderboards
The Jump Jets are your main source for navigation. With a short cooldown and subtle directional response, time them correctly for the best approach, adjustments, and angle.

If anyone is debating whether they should buy Not a Hero since it is on steam sale today then know that I refunded my purchase after 30 minutes of play. It ain't great.

What didn't you like about it?

Their just isn't enough to it, the combat feels like it is lacking moves or abilities to evolve it beyond just room after room of repetitive goons that can be downed by the same strategy. This isn't helped by the lack of clarity in the graphics and the grating after mission chat by Bunnylord that although begins amusing enough gets irritating after a mission or two.

I've seen others mention the same things. Guess I can always get a refund if I find it dull.

Really struggling to find time this month to play and put stuff up - will hopefully get my finger out sometime next week and get some stuff done.

Had a look through the list of games and think i will be struggling to get more than a few in.

I've been the same - mega behind on a lot of real work this month and Rocket League came out so I was doubly ruined.

My Quick Look of Tachyon Project:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx8nNLSwl0c

header.jpg

Quick Impressions:

Essentially, it's a Geometry Wars-like. The scoring method is inversed. So instead of shooting things to increase your score and picking up their gems to increase your multiplier, you shoot things to increase your multiplier and pick up gems to increase your score.

I kind of prefer the way scoring is handled in vanilla Geometry Wars, but this way is completely valid.

The parts that expand on the Geometry Wars formula is with the ship's configuration. You need to advance in the game to unlock new weapons and augments, but essentially you can create a custom loadout for your ship, which is also pleasantly necessary as the game progresses (instead of just being a thing you can do with no purpose).

For instance, instead of your standard mini-spread gun pattern, you can opt for a more narrow but faster shot, like a machine gun. Or you can go even tighter and with a higher frequency and have a laser.

Vanilla Geometry Wars gives you Bombs, Tachyon Project gives you bombs as well. But they aren't level destroyers, they just do a spread of damage. It doesn't necessarily have to kill your enemies, just injure them. Or you could opt to do one set of bombs and one set of proximity mines, or freezing bombs.

Additionally, you get two augments to complete your loadout. Augments such as fire faster, do more damage per shot, your ship goes faster, etc.

The last thing I want to mention is the timer. The timer has two mechanics attached to it. One is that it's your health. You can gain health/time by defeating enemies. The second is your bombs/secondary weapons use 1 second per use (each secondary weapon has a cooldown, so you can't just spam it forcing yourself to die.)

Bottom line: Tachyon Project is a well done Geometry Wars clone, mechanics-wise. The visuals and sound are not up to par though.

My Quick Look of Zombie Killtime:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWz3vck2s_U

header.jpg

Quick Impressions:

I've played tons of these types of games before, the most recent one I can remember is Zombie Kill Of The Week - Reborn. Essentially, it's like CoD Zombies, but in 2D. Zombie Killtime features Minecraft-like characters and enemies. They aren't voxels as far as I can tell, they are just chunky pixels.

There are a few character classes, (Medic, Scout, Soldier, etc) of which I only tried assault: as no one is really playing this game yet (it doesn't come out for another few weeks.)

It's a game where you really need to have friends play with you to make it worthwhile, kind-of-thing.

Sat down to play a couple of early access bits tonight:

Secrets of Grindea - still amazing, can't wait for the full game.

Into The Stars - UI is all kinds of amateurish and there's some weak elements in there, but a lot of potential as well.

If anyone is thinking of getting "Battle for the Sun" uhm. Ya no.

My video review inside the spoiler incase we don't allow any kind of promotion here.

If you don't like youtube reviewers then I will sum it up.
Its not good.

Its fine to post videos/reviews/links and whatnot. One note though, if you post a link, I would appreciate at least a short summary, so people know the general direction and are not blind-directed to external content (which also makes it less likely to be clicked on btw).

INto the Stars I have a love hate relationship with. The ideas are tech are sound. Other issues though...wow

Been playing a bit of Feist, too early to tell if it's a good game or not, but visual- and atmosphere-wise, it's really well-done so far. Well the concept may sound similar to Rain World (2D platformer, a little creature in a world filled with other predators and species, need to use the environment to fight back and survive), the two are nothing alike. Feist is more arcadey, faster, action-focused, where you're dodging stinger projectiles and throwing logs at teleporting biped things

Grindea is really fantastic. Found myself grinding lanterns and having a blast. Can't wait for final release. Might hold off until then. Only completed the Sky Ruins.

It really is - I'm only on the first quest but it's just really high quality stuff. The animations are amazing.

So...this thread has been quiet this month...

Have to say, really weird to see the IOS threads growing again after a big dip due to moving to Community while the Indie thread is so quiet.

What have you guys been playing recently? Still enjoying Feist, but I finally picked up Dying Light so I've been hooked on that today

Dark Souls man, not time for indie games when DS2 is sucking out every minute of free time I have in its always hungry maw. Although thinking about picking up Cradle this evening but seeing Ant-man with the lads so I won't be able to play it till tomorrow at the earliest which is a little rubbish.

How is Feist coming along? I like its art style but don't really have the funds at the moment to take a gamble on something.

I was finishing Evil Within this week (and played some of the DLC). Absolutely fantastic game btw, but maybe I get to play some Indies tonight/tomorrow.

It's been a quiet gaming month for me in general so I haven't had much to post about, nor have I played much in the OP.

I have played some Rocket League (which is great), I have also played some Grindea (which is great), Into the Stars (which could be great) and I'm also trying to finish Beyond Good & Evil.

I couldn't hack DS2 at all. I finished it, obviously, but I think it's easily the weakest of the 4 "souls" games.

I'll probably pick up Cradle tomorrow morning as well then try and spend some time with the games in the OP and research a few more for next month's OP.

I haven't really played anything in months. Been far too busy with real work, going out, post-release support on Malebolgia and early development for The Godbeast.

I have a press copy of Enter the Gungeon and it is incredible.

I do not like this genre normally. But this game? THIS GAME? It's amazing.
