CBR: CBR announced a new "Hercules" series from Dan Abnett and Luke Ross earlier this week. That's a character that had success as a solo character in some cult-favorite books a few years ago co-written by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, but he hasn't been seen too much lately. What made the time right for him to get another solo spotlight?

Alonso: Dan Abnett pitched the idea of a new Hercules series with a fresh new take that excited us, and so we decided to go with it.

CBR: Also, a lot of fans have been curious if the character's sexuality -- it's been strongly suggested Hercules is bisexual, and in "X-Treme X-Men" an alternate Hercules was in a relationship with Wolverine -- will play a part in the series. Is there any insight you can provide at this point?

Alonso: Hercules and James Howlett's relationship in "X-Treme X-Men" took place in a unique alternate universe, similar to how Colossus was gay in the Ultimate Universe, but is straight in the 616. Same goes for Hercules here.

[Editor's note: Marvel declined a follow-up question on this subject.]
This news has angered some.

Subsequent writers can change things whenever they feel like it. See several characters coming out as bisexual in Young Avengers a couple of years ago.

The bisexual hints for Herc himself were rather recent no? Perhaps someone picks up on that again in the future. Perhaps not. There are plenty of LGB characters in the Marvel U who aren't just hinted at.

I'm really unfamiliar with Hercules. How long was his run when he was gay/bisexual?

edit: oh reading the chat it was just an alternate version. He was never bisexual in the mainline comics?

that is a cool art. I only know Hercules from the goofy image often post in comic thread like him with shehulk or him with Thor. never got the image he's supposed to be serious character, lol

It kind of reminds of Dan Jurgens' (think I got that right) work in the 90s

There's a bunch of people on Twitter really mad about this.

They're still regularly dumping money into Marvel/DC properties on a regular basis after constant social justice snafus on an almost regular basis.

Nothing's going to change.

Won't someone think of the tweeters?

This feels like one of the series that will be cut after 6 months. I will be shocked if 25 of the 50 titles is going after a year.

It's going to be just like the New 52. Most will be culled. Regardless of the average quality, there's no way that many books are going to put up enough numbers to justify keeping them going.

As along as Ultimates pull safe numbers, everything else could go keep Squirrel Girl company on the sales charts,

Just checked the charts, Goddamn Captain Marvel.

I don't know about 6 months. If they can keep a Legion solo book going for 24 issues, I am sure Herc can stick around for at least a year.

being straight is a snafu?

There was an alternative Herc that showed up a year or so ago who had a relationship with Logan from the same alternative universe.

Some people expected that would mean Herc would be bi in the normal universe as well.

But since he's not some are deciding to take offense to that.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
I dont know anything about the characer except a few panals posted here and therem and his infamous dumb thumbs up picture.

But looking at the cover it seems to be taking place in new york, I thought hercules was part of the intergalactic universe of marvel, aka thor, GOTG, nova, etc.

I wonder how many of those angry with this decision were going to buy the comic anyway.

realtalk: ever since I've heard Greg Pak's Herc run was a thing, I've had some level of sympathy for Hercules, so I had some interest in the book. This whole bi erasure thing soured me a whole lot on it, to the point where I think I'll spend my money elsewhere.

Had. It ended last year.

I am going to have to track it down, I am curious at what they did with him. 24 issues? And they canceled the Nightcrawler series at 12.

He travels. He gets around, more so than THor.

What recent Marvel books got canceled at less than 10 issues?
Wasn't Elektra the shortest, with its 11 issues?
They're not DC bad.

It was a throwaway comment in one issue.

Doesn't count as major character development.

You can still look at him as bi or omnisexual, just that the current writer is choosing not to cover it.

I'm starting to hate comics, creators, and their fans for things like this.

Having a character be one way, but then changing them into something else.

Like the whole doombots retcon thing. But when you do it with social issues people take personal stock.

"was a thing?" What kind of thing are you thinking that it was?

Well if they want to talk specifics, he had a wife in the greek mythology story...

I can get being upset/disappointed that they didn't continue that plotline, but outrage?

Prepare to be disappointed.

The ending is.....yeah.

i read all 3 issues of World Watch, and that comic where writer went insane in the middle of issue two than claimed Mark Twain took over duties and wrote issue 3.

Fucking Chuck Austen

Its wasn't on the level of Shatterstar though.

From what I understand it was a throwaway line.

Might as well do a series based on Rogues affair with the Sentry.

No, they're not the same, because the Sentry thing was reaaaaaally stupid. But the Sentry thing at least had a mini storyline around it.

Pr response should have been "wait and see".

It was a stupid statement.

But then again "Who he going to be fucking?" isn't a very good question

People are too hip to the "wait and see" option select (options being either do nothing and wait till it all blows over or actually do the thing and make the naysayers look bad) cause companies have used the former option too much. He had to say something. Could have said something far better than this, but "wait and see" wouldn't have been enough.

It will be interesting if they reverse course and make Abbott rewriter, or they will just go ahead.

Awful I laughed, but this and the Bobby/Iceman being gay thing was just poorly handled both times.
Cause they can't let shit happen organically.

DC and Marvel suck at romance

Seriously, dumb PR. Didn't even need to say "wait and see", which would have been purposefully misleading, he could've just said something like "the romantic subplot involves a women, that's not necessarily saying that he's straight, he could be bi but his orientation is never really discussed". And then nobody would be talking about this.
