Wait, there was a 14.5? That has completely gone under the radar for me. Good to see Sanae back, she comes in a close 3rd behind Youmu and Sakuya.

Urban Legend in Limbo. It was released earlier this year and was a fighting game.

And
considering it's ending placed prominence on an Usami's meddling leading to the Lunarian invasion, I'm really thinking that ZUN is trying to tie in the Music CD stories with the games' story proper.
 
On a related note, Twillight Frontier is releasing the OST to ULiL.

I dont get ZUN. His games are awesome, his sense of design too... his character art is stuck since 10 years ago and still looks... not so great.
Are we still stuck in low-res too?
 
I've always heard about these Touhou games but never played them.

Decided to try the LLK demo and DAMN this is fun but crazy hard. I'm impressed and kicking myself for taking so long to try one of these.

I'll definitely be putting some time into this demo then going back and trying out the other ones. Thanks for this thread!

You should go further back than that. Compare it EoSD, and he's practically DaVinci now.

Did he also do the PC-98 art as well? They look so different to Windows era games.

Decided to try the LLK demo and DAMN this is fun but crazy hard. I'm impressed and kicking myself for taking so long to try one of these.

Maybe it's me being used to seeing ZUN art all these years, but certain characters are done really well. Examples being DDC Seija and Shinmyoumaru and Trojan Green Asteroid Maribel.

Did he also do the PC-98 art as well? They look so different to Windows era games.

He most certainly did the PC-98 art, I believe they look so different is mainly due to limitations and an improvment in artstyles. His Mystic Square stuff is indeed quite similar in style to his EoSD stuff.

Oh believe me LoLK's demo is brutal. I felt bad for putting Sanae through an endless cycle of death and rebirth at the hands of Doremy who is nowhere near "Sweet".
 
I'll be honest, LLK's demo tearing my ass apart is part of what has me so interested in it, and I'm not even a great Touhou player (I have 4 normal 1'ccs). Can't wait to never beat this game in Legacy mode ever, lol.

Yeah, I can. It's a shame though. Like, I WANT Touhou to be seen by a wider audience. I WANT it to get noticed. I want people to see what's made the games fun. It's already really niche, and not localizing the games isn't going to help with that, especially since as far as I've seen, Playism did a great job with La Mulana. Basically the only people who were going to spend 15 bucks on an untranslated touhou game when you can use shady methods easily for free like they have for years is the diehard fans. But I'd love to see more than just the long time diehard fans trying this game series and having fun.

It's the reason I was so hyped in making that OT for DDC. I wanted to give GAF a good introduction to the games so that people might learn more and consider trying. I think the worst part was that we didn't learn about the lack of English until way later on. I wonder if it was potentially in the works up until then, but either way, it never happened.

At least ZUN art these days don't make my eyes burn when I look at them. And some character designs are pretty decent.

Character design is good to great, but the execution is serviceable.

At least it lays the groundwork for doujins with actual good art =_=

Windows 10 breaks fullscreen in all Touhou games 6 to 9.5, including IaMP. This is a big deal imo.
They all work fine when windowed, but then you have to deal with the extra input lag from the Desktop Window Manager.

So I've returned to UFO after playing a lot of other games. I'm finally making some progress after being stuck on Ryou's first nonspell. It feels like her nonspells are harder than her actual spell cards, mainly because lasers that bend is confusing and unnatural and they shouldn't exist :(

I've managed to capture Ichirin's final spell card, found a semi-consistent route for Nazrin's final spell card, see Ryou's other spell cards, and get through Stage 5 - Makai with 2 bombs and a life (if I'm lucky). I'm also much more confident in being able to capture Murasa's survival spell card.

Oh crap that sucks about Windows 10. I doubt that'll ever be officially fixed, and I don't like windowed... I hope it can be fan patched in some way. I'm not nearly done with those games.

I've been thinking about this for a while. Kosuzu doesn't really fit in tone with the rest of FS. I may be misremembering things/insane, but here's my two cents.

Kosuzu is basically fairly happy-go-lucky, innocent (though she can be manipulative), and cute. A trademark of characters from cute slice-of-life anime. However, in stark contrast with this, FS also boasts some of the more terrifying/monstrous designs for its non-human/youkai characters. Contrast the Chupacabra with WaHH's Raijuu for example.

Characterizations are also generally more serious compared to their WaHH counterparts. Reimu especially is generally seen as more serious and less laid-back than in WaHH. And her brutality is not played for laughs either.

In the first case, Reimu's aggressiveness is seen as a gag. In the latter case, her line precedes the moment
she kills Mr. Fortune Teller.

Adding to that, FS is generally darker in terms of story. FS is not a slice of life unlike the Fairies manga or WaHH, it's more of a mystery/horror hybrid. But Kosuzu's status as manga protagonist really contrasts her character with the setting.

Kosuzu expects things to go well for her (such as relying on Reimu to save her when the time comes), that I think her luck will eventually run out at some point. I believe ZUN intended this contrast in order to brutally subvert audience expectations later on. Whatever happens, I do not foresee FS having a happy ending.

Feel free to ignore my insane ramblings, but I really wanted to get this out of my chest ever since I started watching School-Live.

oh hey, the DirectX8 to DirectX9 converter makes the older Touhou games compatible with OBS. Very nice.
The converter also opens the door for various DirectX9 injectors. Touhou SweetFX ENB would be hilarious.

Apart from the expected bugfixes the biggest change is in the Chapters' Reward: before it was a bomb fragment if you've got more than 1m points, now it's a life fragment!
Also from a quick run on normal it seems like Doremy's nonspells are a little bit slower but that may just be my imagination.

My progress with hard mode slowed down so much it's not even funny, it took me forever to clear PCB and I was beginning to think I fell out in love with the game which amongst my favorite in the series. :( Turns out it was just Reimu, even her B shot-type feels so weak in that game it's not even funny, once I cleared the game with her and started using Marisa I was blasting everything in my path it was glorious. And now I'm slowly finishing IN but so far I'm having an easy time doing really well in the first five stages which I can clear with my eyes closed and then wasting all my resources on Kaguya... It's an effective method but not a really satisfying one.

If there's a patch I'd probably go with 14 i guess

IIRC thcrap should work with Playism TH14 these days.
Also TH15 is coming out on August 14. Touhou goes to the moon again whoo.
 
Last Minute Speculation on the identity of the Stage 6 boss:

Stage 6 could be a genderswapped Hoori (doubtful, would be a repeat of Miko), or Tamatori-hime as they were prominent wielders of the Tide Jewels. Tamatori in particular has indirect connections to Mokou via her father. So it's possible ZUN may include her as a reference to Mokou. Tamatori-hime also embedded the Tide Jewel within herself, so she is essentially the Tide Jewel in question.

I'm playing Dodonpachi and I don't even know why my plans were to play the demo like crazy while clearing IN with every team but heh I guess I'll get back to touhou in 2 days when LoLK will come out. I'm a little bit worried about the difficulty though, I know the game is intended to be played in Point Device mode but I hope it will be clearable nonetheless in Legacy mode without having to be the next Jaimers91.
 
So have you guys seen the leaks of the rest of the LoLK bosses? There's certainly some...interesting new designs there.

Stage 5 one looks like a clown America threw up on...

I really like the design for stage 4 and 6 bosses though.

I still can't believe ZUN went with the mechanics of life pieces for every chapter, I guess the scoring play will be dominated by suiciding Reisens spamming bombs to herd mad graze, it will be glorious.

clownpiece is hilarious I still can't decide if I love her or hate her but I'm laughing a lot
 
Clownpiece is amazing. Even for Touhou she feels very out of place, and I think that's the vibe ZUN was going for her. I just love her design.


And her theme is the standout piece in the entire game. It's so full of energy and thankfully ZUN didn't went the route of Circus music for her. It's so menacing.

Other themes will need time before growing on me. Hecatia's theme was shockingly boring.

And I was there at Comiket when it all happened. ZUN's line was staggeringly long. Waited for an hour in the sun.

Slightly amusing annectdote :
One of Junko's spellcards is called 殺意の百合 (Lily of killing intent). The thing is, Lily is written with the same kanji for "Yuri", and given Junko's one of the few characters in the series who canonically has a husband, I found this rather amusing.

I definitely like the newer characters designs more than when I first saw them (though I always liked the Stage 4 and 6 bosses designs). Still don't like Doremi though and I'm kinda bummed out at the lack of portraitless midbosses (since the fans tend to be really creative with them)

The EX boss looks completely terrible though. I mean besides the really bad, Hina-tier face it feels like a complete miss, character design wise. It seems to be trying to be punk-y but Nue already does that way better than her. I know there will be good fan art, but idk. She's the first Touhou I really dislike design wise (this isn't new game syndrome either, even for my first impressions of DDC there weren't any designs I hated there)

Also I'm kinda weirdly suspicious that ZUN's been watching some western animation. Because I'm reminded of Steven Universe (because of the EX bosses name) and Star vs. the Forces of Evil (because Clownpiece is also a cheerful-looking, stockings-toting blonde-with-a-wand...) but idk I'm probably reaching

Oh, also I was looking around Pixiv (was looking for some good fan art to post here but there's not that much for all the characters) and uh looks like in terms of fan art for the newly introduced characters it's 4>5>6>EX. That didn't really happen with DDC.
That was more like almost everyone was getting attention, except the Tsukumogami Twins who were being leeched off everyone else, and then it petered out and has stayed that way (though Seija and Sukuna got bumps in art, for obvious reasons)

Decided to check up on Demetori's website on a whim, and lo and behold a new album is coming out.

Most of the songs appear to be from DDC. Very exciting stuff.

I'm really hoping they do a good Pristine Beat ~ Primordial Beat cover

Yeah I'm doing that but it's pretty tedious when I need to practice something in the later stages since I need to do everything before that again... Unless there is a way to use Pointdevice in Practice Mode? It would be so cool if the game allowed to practice every single chapter in the game.

Is 15 broken in windows 10? Running fullscreen or windowed just immediately crashes. Anyone else having this problem?
TH10 and later are all DirectX 9 and should all work on Windows 10. For me everything from TH10 to TH15 works totally fine in Windows 10.
Possibly your resolution setting is messed up. Go to custom.exe and drop the resolution.
Alternatively, try reinstalling the game.
