NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Yeah, once you decide you want to go for a set its hard not to pull that trigger if you have the money. I have spent upwards of $70 on an item in my quest for CIB black box games. But that's about my limit and many of these have $100, $125 or higher BIN prices. You have to be patient.

On that note, I might as well post this - my 17th game in the black box set:

wow. never heard of this one.

I finally got Batman NES and wow it truly is great.

I'm really enjoying the platforming and it even looks good on composite, it's just a shame I had to get an NES to play it.

I'm thinking of doing a quick playthrough of Metal Gear on NES ahead of TPP. I've already played through the MSX games. How different is the NES version?
Fair bit different.
I've played through both and I prefer the NES version. If nothing else the choppiness of the MSX gets on my nerves, though the closest to original hardware I've played is a one-chip MSX2. It's also more colourful, less linear and I prefer the music.

Good write up I agree with here.

Since I cant make a thread what system should I get a 3dsxl or a wii u, and which games, or should I wait it out for the nx. thanks

This is a thread about retro gaming, specifically NES and Famicom. Look around in Gaming for 3DS and Wii U threads and ask there. Personally, I would wait on Wii U and get a cheap 2DS or 3DSXL (NEW variant not really worth it). This is probably Wii U's last "good" year. Use the money to pick up a Famicom. :D

wow. never heard of this one.

Well, it's definitely not one of the better games in the bunch. But ... you know ... complete sets and all. A very brief overview of the whole set here. There are 33 if you count the three silver colored boxes. There are two I will probably never own due to rarity and cost: Stack Up (comes in a big box with lots of pieces for ROB) and DK Jr Math (just rare and costs a ridiculous amount). I actually have a DK Jr Math cart, which I got for a really good price several years ago. I still need a Stack Up cart. I might end up putting those two in clamshell boxes just to feel like the set is complete. Or maybe I will win the lottery some day....

if you have real carts, and you're not selling, surely someone makes repro boxes. Better than those crappy plastic cases.

Someone is making a "faithful edition" of Metal Gear for the NES, restoring the content and layout of the MSX version. Not sure how far along it is but seems interesting

What a cool project.

I've definitely considered that, too. I haven't researched it very much, though, and the only repro boxes I see on eBay for something like DKJM for for like $150. Pffft. That's eBay, though. I'm sure buying directly would be a fraction of the cost.

I'm a little biased cause I want to make it my speed game but

Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is a incredible hidden gem, a heck of a little game. Simple but tough, intense, fun, and just all around a great 2d action/slight platformer. Everything feels good about it, the jumping in particular is solid.

Finally got some of my systems up in my new apartment, and of course, the RGB-modded Famicom was among the first to be set up. However, I have been wondering some things. First and most important, as well as playing Famicom-games, I have also played a few Nes-games that mostly plays fine. One big exception is Castlevania 3 (US-version) though. This game has all kind of glitches and crashed even before I get to the first level. Is this a known issue? Tried to google it, but couldnt find anything.

Another thing I wonder, is when I turn on the system, I see the screen, and after maybe a second or a little less it flashes slightly. Is this also a normal issue? What can cause it?

what converter are you using. CV3 has issues with some converters I believe. Works fine on mine.

I use a common one that I bought from Honk Kong I believe, doesnt say anything special on it. Would you care to link to a buyer that sells the one you are using?

Mine is old and not available as well. It's grey and the cart faces backward.

I'm mostly an SNES collector but just got into nes.

Can anyone recommend games that would suit my tastes? I generally enjoy platformers, maybe action shooters too, and adventure games with a save point.

Favourite game is Punch Out! Also own bionic commando, rad racer, and Mario games.

Anything I should buy?

Platformers are an embarrassment of riches on the NES. I'm omitting the Super Mario games because those are obvious.

Kirby's Adventure
Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2
Castlevania 1 and 3
Mega Man 2 and 3
Ducktales
Rescue Rangers
Batman
Journey to Silius
Blaster Master
Shadow of the Ninja

For shooters:

LifeForce
Dragon Spirit
Contra and Super C

I wasn't into adventure games during the NES era, but I enjoyed Faxanadu and Zelda II.

Obviously adventure gamers want King's Quest V.

All the puzzles with ridiculous (and easy to render unwinnable) solutions, but with a tenth of the colors, none of the voice-acting (YMMV on this) and no mouse support!

I mean, it amuses me that it exists, at any rate.

Interesting! Thanks for the feedback. You are right about faxanadu, what a weirdly cool game.

What's your feeling about startropics?

Never played it. The only traditional RPG I played on the NES during its heyday was the original Final Fantasy.

Didn't fall in love in the genre until the SNES.

So I've been doing some thinking, now that I've been clearing out on a few things here and there, I don't think I really need my NES. I have an RGB modded AV Famicom, I have an FDS, I have an Everdrive, and I do have a 72 to 60 Pin adapter as well. Is there any real reason I should keep the NES around? I can't think of any..

That it hasn't been released on any Virtual Console service yet.

It took me this long to play it after all.

You should never not have an NES :p

Sounds like your AV Famicom is your main system anyway since it can play everything paired with that converter ( and i'd think even for games like CV3, you'd be playing the Japanese version with the extra effects) so probably not?

That's what I was thinking.. and I gave my copy of CV3 to a friend as a christmas present 2 years ago so... yah, I might just clean it up and sell it off..

Ok thanks! Seems all my other games work fine, so not sure if its worth getting a new adaptor for one game. But then again, it is one of the best games on the system. Maybe this is finally the reason I need to get the famicom-version, hmm.

Keep it it's cool and not worth much anyway by itself.

Famicom is my main, too... And I'd never give away my NES. Too much nostalgia for the American side of the 8-bit era represented by that grey box.

But then again I love collecting regional variations and re-designs of consoles. i.e. I grew up on American SNES, but I needed a Super Famicom too for that slick design.

I gotta grab a Famicom and a Disc System asap. Which is the best?

Also, side note, my US 2nd gen SNES has stopped working today. Seems like the pins have stopped reading properly and will only display the game when I tilt the cartridge. Sucks real bad.

You can't go wrong with an AV Famicom. Think about the fact that it uses NES controller ports so you can use all your old accessories (needs to be internally modded for the Zapper, but if you're getting an RGB mod, perfect excuse to do that). Supports composite out of the box without a mod (original Famicom is RF only! Unlike all NESs)

Then just pair that with a regular Disk System.

Sharp Twin Famicom is a good option though. Still has wired-in controllers like the original Famicom... but I believe they have a longer length? It's a neat device but I'd prefer the Nintendo-made hardware, myself.

Yesssshhhh just beat Batman NES and I hope that fall hurt alot Joker.

The game was a lot shorter than I was expecting and tons of cheap enemy placement in the final levels too. You basically have to stun lock the bosses in order to win.

Now I need to find my next NES platforming fix.

Ninja Gaiden?

Congrats BTW.

original twin still has short cords.

The turbo twin has longer cords, but still not as long as NES, partly because they come out the back. You can make an adapter for the Fami expansion plug for NES controllers very easily though.

Also Twin is kind of plain looking overall.

AV Fami is honestly the overall best, though original Fami is my favourite. I'm working on creating the ultimate original Fami with NES controller ports, and ultimately RGB.

Kickmaster
Conquest of the Crystal Palace
Whomp'em
Gimmick (repro unless you've got that kinda cash)

EDIT:

...Man I must be out of touch with game prices again. Well, they're still worth it.

Don't give up on finding Stack Up and Donkey Kong Jr. Math. I found that Stack Up as part of an NES lot earlier this year. The lot was pretty pricey, but I was able to make back most of my money by selling everything else. In the end, I got the Stack Up for less than $100.

Haha yeah that's the kind of length you go to to complete a set. I've bought bulk lots for just one item.

3: Super C
4: Castlevania 3
5: Powerblade
6: Zen: intergalactic Ninja
7: Ninja Gaiden 2
8: Shadow of the Ninja
9: Vice: Project Doom
10: Journey to Silious

Nice! Delicious photo. Thanks for the encouragement. I have recently begun experimenting with buying lots in order to sell some and get certain games cheaper. I did a deal this summer where I got three games with a combined PC value of $240 for $120, after selling the rest of the lot. And wow, $100 is very well worth it for a complete Stack Up.

Right now I am putting a stop on buying nearly any video games - new or old - until I can sell a few more things from my basement clean-out and save some money for a Framemeister. As I've said in this thread before (but am embarrassed to admit) I am buying these retro games with no acceptable setup for playing them right now.

I tested a lot of carts this weekend, but the most fun was when my daughter sat down to try a few with me and we played Snoopy's silly sports spectacular. Not a long game by any means, but we ran through all the events multiple times. We had the whole room laughing as we failed most of the events the first time(s)...instructions might have helped, but it wouldn't have been as fun. It was really a nice surprise.

Also spent a good amount of time with Solar Jetman and ran through Contra. I haven't done that in more than a decade.
