MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE END OF EPISODE 2

There's one thing in particular that instantly made me completely infatuated with this game.

Yes, you can save Kate. But in order to do so, you had to have paid attention to her life. It doesn't give you any hints, any clues--in a way, it's a question of how much you were roleplaying. Did you actually care about Kate? Did you take the time to get to know her, to a degree that not only did you look into her family life, but were interested enough in it that you remembered? It's an almost forth-wall breaking thing, and really drives home the emotion of the scene. I had such a sense of panic going through me during that scene, and it was the exact same panic that Max felt. The fear that I didn't get to know her well enough, that I wasn't a good enough friend to save her.
I just pulled out the journal because it keeps a record of all the notes, posters, and such that you've come across and the answers to satisfy her are all found in things around her room. I can just imagine Kate on the edge of the building ready to jump while watching Max rummage around in her journal for 3 minutes preparing a canned response.

Well, technically there is only one right choice for one of the decisions.

(Massive not really spoiler for...think it was episode 2?)
Better pick them bacon and eggs, m'fer.
Big episode 4 spoiler:
Chloe doesn't die if you chose the pancakes. Everyone lives happily ever after.

Pancakes

hot, steaming, as melted butter slips into the cracks, drizzled with sticky sweet syrup OH GOD
Oh god episode 4.

The first major decision. Chloe pls no, don't make me do this T___________T

Just finished episode 4...I need to sit down...

I motherfucking called it that Jefferson was a factor in this shit. Someone was encouraging Nathan's fucked up photos and it was Jefferson. I think his dad wanted to get his son under control and decided that his fucked up art calmed him down from being a complete psychopath or someshit. So he hires some washed up photographer who is also into some dark shit (and happens to have a couple scandals for blackmail) and has him teach Nathan. Drugs and fucked up photos were working for awhile but something went wrong with Rachel Amber. In one the bunker photos she's not drugged and seriously pissed off. I think she realized what exactly was happening for this reason Sean Prescott and Mr. Jefferson decided she need to disappear permanently. Nathan has no idea about any of this of course since he is drugged in that photo of him and Rachel in the junkyard. I don't know if the Principal is in on this shit but I wouldn't be surprised at all. I also feel like the Doe is Rachael Amber's spirit or w/e.

Now a lot of what's gonna happen in the next episode is gonna depend on your friend status with Victoria, Frank being alive, whether or not you went against David. Warren's photo will also probably be used to jump back into time and save Chloe and/or brutally murder Jefferson. It'd be pretty funny if helping Alyssa every episode will culminate into her saving you from danger.

I need episode 5...yesterday.

I had such a sense of panic going through me during that scene, and it was the exact same panic that Max felt. The fear that I didn't get to know her well enough, that I wasn't a good enough friend to save her. So I am guessing that the people simply failed to save Kate.

In another thread, people kept talking about how shocked they were about the end of Episode 2. Strangely enough, I was completely let down when
I was able to save Kate. I was thinking - wait a minute, where is the "shocking" event that is supposed to blow me away? Not that I didn't like Kate - I really like her as a character and feel sorry for what she's going through. But I was expecting Nathan to shoot Kate, or Kate to actually kill herself, instead I saved her, which was awesome, but unfortunately I kept expecting some other huge event to occur. It's like when someone says there is a twist in a movie - you keep waiting and waiting for this huge twist to materialize and nothing that occurs can meet your expectations
.

But now that I've read your post aasoncott, I feel soooo much better and I'm appreciating the game a lot more.
I did legitimately care about Kate. I answered her phone call, I stood up for her when she was being harassed by David, and I made sure to tell her to go to the police even if it went against my better judgement. In the back of my mind I knew going to the police right away might be a bad idea but ONLY because of how influential and bulletproof Nathan seemed. What if the police were in Nathan's family's pocket? Might be better to get more evidence, no? But once I saw how extremely happy Kate was when I encouraged her to go to the cops, I couldn't reverse the decision

Was driving to work today listening to the first song that plays in episode 4,
at the party
, and came to the conclusion that of this game sticks the landing, it will be one of the best story experiences of the year in any medium.

As far as these type of narrative games go -- it's probably the best one since The Walking dead. The Wolf Among Us had great peaks but was quite inconsistent, first episode (especially the ending) was fantastic. I really like Walking Dead Season 2, but I know it has a tonne of problems. Only played the first Tales from Borderlands episode, was good, showed promise, i'll go back to it. Game of Thrones has been a mixed bag, episode 1 had an incredible ending, but the rest of the season hasn't matched it -- plenty of time to redeem that though.

I feel really great about Life is Strange, all the way through. I know some people have hated on the writing, and I feel like this is comparable to when people complained about Juno, it's just something I feel works in the established world, and there's a consistency to it that just works for the characters -- the "no-one talks like that!" argument doesn't really hold any weight in my books.

I love this game, I'm going to miss these characters so much.

Was just watching a Twitch Stream of LiS, and the chat on that particular stream mentioned that Episode 5 could be released as soon as Tuesday, August 25! This is according to the Steam Release page for LiS episodes.

So, what does Gaf think about this? Could Episode 5 actually be coming out on Tuesday?

As of today, Dontnod are only just recording necessary voice work for episode 5, so there is absolutely 0 chance. Late Sept at earliest. More likely to be October

I picked this up yesterday. Excited to check it out! I just need to wrap up Resident Evil Revelations 2 first, then i'm hoping to squeeze in an episode or two before MGS5 comes out. Is this a good game to take breaks from or wait and tackle all at once?

it's one of the few episodic games i feel works really well in episode format. i say play 1 & 2 together, then take breaks in between episodes.

Seconded.

GOTY for me is probably going to be TW3 (I just can't see anything upcoming that's going to top it) but LiS really has been outstanding aside from the stupid bottle hunt section. Like KoruptData I really hope that they deliver on the ending, because it would be a shame if Dontnod stumbled at the last hurdle. Albeit I guess it's unlikely we'll see these characters again (though I'd be totally up for Max as some kind of time travelling photographic detective set in NYC or some such). I hope that Dontnod produce further narrative games of this quality.

Telltale need to take a long hard look at LiS and get their act together. Re-evaluating their game engine choice wouldn't be a bad starting point.

I think you're giving way too much credit to their decision making tech, the strength of the choices is purely because of the writing, ultimately most of them are of no consequence to the development of the main storyline.

But Telltale should definitely switch engines because of all the bugs.

don't marathon it!

give yourself a day between each episode

great advice. play each episode as just that: a single adventure to play through and enjoy.

give it a little time, then play the next. it really is paced well that way.

Welcome new players to LiS! The game has been such an amazing and pleasant surprise for me.

Definitely on my GOTY short list, and emotionally engaging/affecting on a level few games achieve. It's great to see people pick it up.

i haven't played Witcher 3, so my closest contender is Rocket League.

LiS takes the lead if it really sticks the landing

Nothing else is really close for me. Witcher 3 maybe but I don't know when or if I'll ever finish that.

For me LiS stands out with stuff like Axiom Verge and Hotline Miami 2 not even that close behind. I suspect MGSV gives LiS a good run for its money on my list though.

If the ending of LiS falls flat, no one's going to remember it outside of the disappointing end.

Not entirely true. It has some good moments. It'll be remembered for having solid execution on different paths, with an ending that left a lot to be desired for either mechanical and/or story reasons. Unless they cheap out, though, I don't see either happening. All they have to do is hold to the same method they've used since episode 1, and the number of outcomes should allow a good ending for just about anyone... unless they've written the story to hammer home one moral, regardless of how you played. A million outcomes, all meaning the same thing. Which would be very TellTale of them.

Even strong branches can break.

Finished Episode 1 last night. Missed some optional photos so I will go back and replay when I finish up to Episode 4.I heard the first episode is the worst of the bunch so I am intrigued. I personally like the dialogue thus far. It's pretty genuine for high school kids. The topics they cover and damn near spot on.

I did feel the first episode drifted a little but I suppose they needed to set up the archs. Pretty cool. Will play the rest.
