I feel like I'm the only gamer that doesn't get Metal Gear Solid

This series has so many memories with gamers, and I've tried to get into this series numerous times. Beat MGS on PS1, and while it was OK, the story just lost me, and wasn't all that interesting. Picked up MGS2 after a few months of solid reviews, good word of mouth from my local game shop, and yeah.....terrible story, gameplay was ok, just never really grabbed me. Started 3, played it about halfway through, and stopped.

I've seen the praises of 4, and 5 looks to be high rankings again. I just don't see the love of the series that other people do. I feel like I'm missing out, any other gaffers feel this way?

You aren't the only one.

No one is ever the only one gamer when it comes to not getting a certain video game series.

I don't get Metal Gear Solid, either.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Of course others feel this way. MGSV is just a massive release for the diehards and the people who have been asking for some changes to the MGS formula.

It's like anime. Do you understand anime?
Better analogy would be wrestling stories.

That's like me and the souls game.

Put 40 hours into Demons Souls and after that I just had enough and knew they weren't for me.

The stories were always a hot mess to me but I always found them fun to play. From the sound of things MGSV will have another bad story but the gameplay is looking great.

I have problems with all of the games, primarily related to pacing, design and controls. I still enjoy lots of other aspects of them, but the problems have always represented a barrier to my enjoyment. I love how much heart they have, and I love their knack for subverting player expectation, but they're far from perfect.

Still, Ground Zeroes managed to meaningfully address all my issues with the series, and I can't wait to see play TPP for full game that delivers on the potential that in my mind the series has always had.

Regarding the story. It is always overwrought b grade schlock. But it is overwrought b grade schlock with heart, and I love that.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
I hope MGS Legacy Collection comes out for the PS4. My PS3 is spoilt =/

Pssh you're not alone i cant get into this series at all but i have a friend whos super into nd always tell me plot related things...lets jus say anybody who says kingdom hearts plot is convoluted but at the same time getss every detail of mgs..bull

It was never the story that drew me to the series. It's always been about the gameplay. I've taken the time to understand the basic gist of the story, but there's no denying that it's pretty bizarre.

The story is honestly overrated tripe. There are some interesting characters, especially in MGS3, but it's no Homeric epic.

The MGS formula is interesting characters+mythos+quirkiness/humor+varied gameplay styles+high production values+overwrought themes that have the nuance of a sledgehammer.

I still enjoy the series and will miss it.

FWIW it looks like MGSV is the biggest shake up to the formula and the most newbie friendly since MGS1 so you might like this one since it's so different to the ones before.

I can understand not liking MGS 2's story, but to not like its gameplay at release is weird. It was cutting edge. Squad AI, 1st person aiming, interaction with the world and the graphics were beyond anything else at the time.
Just seems like a weird complaint to me...especially if you played it 13years ago when it came out.

I mean I'm a MGS fanboy but I find it hard to play MGS3 with its archaic controls in 2015, but at release I thought the game controlled fine because there was nothing else doing it better then.

Loved MGS1 on the Playstation but never got into any of the other games.

Series hasn't interested me since.

Isn't this the same with pretty much every other major IP out there?

So the game doesn't appeal to you and probably for many others too.

At the end of the day, no game is going to appeal to everyone, but it doesn't have to.

MGS3 was okay. But yeah, I'm the same, OP. I don't know what more conversation can be had here, though.

Trust me, you're not alone. There is always one big series tons of people either avoid or don't care about.
I'm a huge MGS fan, so this doesn't apply to me. But on the other hand I don't care for something immensely popular like Gears Of War or Madden or any other top selling sports game.

And honestly, if there's any franchise that is truly not for everyone, MGS.

Not much to go on here. Do you like story heavy games? Stealth mechanics? If not you could still appreciate metal gear solid for the sheer attention to detail that is unmatched in other games. Even if you don't get the series you have to give them kudos for the sheer amount of love that goes into each game. Listen to the Paz tapes from peace walker. Even removed from the context of the rest of the game it's an amazing little peace of story.

Ultimately its ok if the series doesn't appeal to you but I hope you can at least appreciate what a stunning achievement it all is.

I really don't understand. It's not like it's mega complex at all.

Unless you just mean you don't get the zeitgeist, in which case that's an issue of personal preference.

I have never seen anyone praise the MGS series for the writing.

The only one that comes close to telling a coherent story is MGS1 and 3. 1 more than 3.

I don't get the love for the Last of Us, so I fully understand not being part of a popular opinion (for the record I think mgs is great and love the story, but can fully understand how it could seem stupid to some people)

How do you understand what is going on in normal games, let alone MGS?

I'm so confused as to how you could be a habitual cutscene skipper and still play games.

Yeah, people who skip any and all cutscenes mystify me.

I was in your boat. I played 2 and 3 around early last gen, and 2 was meh in my recollection, while the story to 3 was excellent, but gameplay for both was just ok.

Bought Ground Zeroes and had an awesome time, so that inspired me to go back and play these games again.

Bought the HD versions. Struggled through 2 (story wasn't super interesting and gameplay again was eh), but I enjoyed every moment of 3. Great narrative, amazing music, all of it. Then I played 4 and PW (never played these) and I loved them both to pieces as well. So now i'm a pretty big fan of the series. I'm hyped beyond belief for MGSV.

The most enjoyment I got out of Metal Gear Solid was the LittleBigPlanet DLC story levels. I think I have every main MGS game and have only played about a couple hours all together.

Oh and I liked that VR missions PS1 game too.

Because the story straight up doesn't matter in a lot of games, or is really bad, or both. I wish I could skip the cutscenes in Max Payne 3, which is otherwise one of my favorite shooters.

I'm not a cutscene skipper but if it's not something as story-focused as an RPG I can understand why some people just want to get to the game part.

Metal Gear?

Seriously though it isn't unheard of lol. I tried to get one of my friends into Metal Gear after he and his dad enjoyed my copy of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow.

He thought the controls sucked and the game was far fetched lol.
We were in Elementary/Primary school.
