Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I swear I don't remember that animation though---it looks like Super Mario even shows some leg. Odd...at first I was wondering if it was an animation added in the JP SMB2 that they put in here.

Someone told me my level are to easy (referring to my 1-X and 2-X levels). So I made now this one:

The Iron Fleet

Man, I spend so much time crafting my levels and i'm lucky to get one or two stars. I should make a short troll level just to get my upload limit above the basic ten.

I've made 3 levels so far and enjoy seeing them stay at 0% clear rate. Seriously, they're not that hard!

Has there been no announcement regarding Nintendo adding checkpoints to the game? They're really needed x_x

Also, I have no hope of ever clearing 100-Mario Challenge on expert. Shit's hard.

Mario Maker has convinced me that a lot of people genuinely suck at Mario (both from a design and gameplay perspective). On my Game of Thwomps level an overwhelming majority of people die on the first Thwomp of the level that can be avoided simply by not running full-steam into it because why would you do that it's clearly too low for you to make it past in time. On my Dry Bones Fortress level a bunch of people have died to the first fire stick that you see coming a mile away.

My face when I look at where some people die in my levels:

No amount of smart level design can take stupidity into account.

Traditionally when you are going under a Thwomp in any Mario game you can make it under them if you run. Maybe throw the player a mushroom and let them take a hit to learn the lesson instead of dying.

The level I submitted for the 1-1 contest has X's at almost every possible hazardous point in the level. And it's a 1-1. Very simple. Only a few enemies. Only 2 bottomless pits which are only 3 tiles long (one with a semi-solid platform above it so it should be impossible to fall into it). I think, no matter how hard or easy you make your level, you should just assume that if there is something that can kill someone, there is someone out there that will be killed by it.

Yeah, it's very easy.

- Play around making a level for 5 minutes (no other game modes, actual editor)

- Game says "you will get more stuff tomorrow, 9/23" or whatever (this is true, but misleading)

- Play around for another 5 minutes, use every new object at least once and place at least 500 objects (500 coins etc., drag all over the screen)

- Game says "oh the stuff arrived earlier than expected, here it is"

- Repeat 8 times
You don't have to do that. Just spam the crap out of your available tiles until you get a notification that the delivery truck has arrived with new assets. Once your new items arrive(they'll have a '!' next to them), start spamming those until the truck arrives again. Rinse and repeat.

Thanks, guys. 45 minutes later and I still haven't unlocked all the parts. I hate this shit, but at least it's a one and done sort of thing and I can get to actually making the levels I want to make soon.

Cant do that. Giving them a mushroom early basically breaks that level (it's a simple puzzle level). I'm also very against giving people powerups for the express purpose of tanking hits. I even put a Goomba just before the Thwomp that's there for the express purpose of stopping the players momentum before getting there

I just uploaded my newest course. The concept this time is a castle where goombas and piranha plants have teamed up. Any feedback is appreciated!

The Goomba-Piranha Plant Accord
B08E-0000-0060-40FD

BmxiDn7.jpg

Best accord since Meech Lake. I like how you turned the Goomba-Piranha Plant combo into a regular enemy, and then varied on it. The recurring springs were great too. I also love how you kept the fire flower from us until the end, although I don't love unlimited fire flowers for the boss. That said that boss is the right idea and I don't know how else you pull that off. Really good stage!

The Terrible Tower of Terror: 27DA-0000-0060-532F

Tried to make a vertical level where you're constantly ascending up a tower. This was tricky, given Mario Maker primarily gives you horizontal space. The trick should be obvious. I'm not sure if it really feels like you're actually gaining height, but I do like having all these little broken up rooms to play with. Each room almost turns in to its own mini-level.

I don't know if it feels like climbing a tower, but I do know it's a fun stage! The key in a stage like this is to keep the elements far enough apart that you can't see the next room through the walls, and you did that. One knock is that one of these rooms is at the very beginning of the subarea, so the camera treats it differently than everywhere else. But you did very well in this stage -- you cut from doors and pipes to advance to the next room, and use a lot of extra non-warping pipes, but I never wondered where to go next. That takes work and skill!

The Hopsichord -

CD85-0000-0060-11D6

I had an idea about a piano that turned into a level in which you visit a broken giant 'Hopsichord' and delve inside its machinery to get it playing right...but something changes every time you return.

lmcbEAo.gif

Where do you people come up with these great ideas? Really good stage, although I don't know that I'd have made the platforming so tight. I hit the beanstalk note block from above the first time, which was basically a death sentence. Maybe the block should have been lower, so hitting it from below would be essentially unavoidable?

I went out of my way to make a super basic/easy mario level with some jumps on big mushroom platforms. Has less than a 50% completion and I see x marks on short and easy jumps right at the start. I don't get it.

I really want to be playing this more and just turn my brain off, hit up some nice levels and have fun but the sorting options are so poor, I am beyond sick of autoplaying levels which makes the top starred courses all nothing I want to see. Expert levels have about a 90 to 10 ratio of being unbelievably awful(and now have actually impossible levels using the glitch which I have been running into now).

So damn true.

I made a level that mirrors SMB1 1-1, except it's underwater. Replaced the goombas with Cheep Cheeps and the turtles with Dry Bones.

66% completion rate with most people dying right at the first ? block.

People will die once then give up, so checkpoints won't solve anything. The only levels that receive recognition are gimmick levels, remakes of old levels, and "don't press anything" levels.

Take for example this level I made. I included an ARROW so that you are guaranteed to make the jump as long as you jump into the trajectory of the arrow, yet there are about 20-30 x's in that one spot alone. It's unbelievable.

Everybody playing this game aren't hardcore gamers making perfect jumps. I'd imagine there are kids under age 5 playing these levels as well.

I don't get the complaining about where people die in your levels - everyone is different.

I got level designer's block quite a few times with this one, but I think I managed. I do believe it's quite a bit harder than most of my stages though.

I really need to start playing more GAF levels. I've been spending too much time making and playtesting my own stuff.

I also want to take a second to tell everyone that El Pescado's levels are pretty legit. I played everything he had last night and I legit thought I was in a traditional Mario game.

Thanks, Seph, I truly appreciate the praise. I really enjoyed your 1-1 stage for the contest and plan on playing more of your stages tonight when my kids are asleep.

I also tried to beat B-Bech's Castlevania stage, but failed too many times for my wife's patience. I plan to try and finish that again tonight.

I was originally planning on only making 4 full traditional worlds, but I'm having so much fun creating that I might do a full eight. I'll need one more medal to be able to upload them all though.

Would like to see check points in a future update obviously. Also those things Yoshi eats to get a 1up. Oh yeah, and different color yoshis.

Speaking of 1ups, right now they are useless outside of 100 mario challenge. Something needs to be done about that.

Would also like to see the dinos from SMW. And, lock and key secret exits.

Almost done with my coverage of the newest Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game.

I'm itching to get back on and make new levels, got a few more ideas in my head.

*headdesks*

The wonders of Easy 100 Mario (decided to go for a quick costume unlock). I just played an auto-level that scrolled through some song lyrics. No, not a set of note blocks that played the song.. just the lyrics.

I die a lot in the first enemy or pitfall.

I'm more likely to look away to do something else, since I don't care if I die at that point.

I just scrapped a Half-Finished Level and Saved over it.

As a sequel to my Flagship Level, Firebar Maze, it paled in comparison.

Making sequels are hard.

I feel like I just played a Gaffer Level, called FINAL BOSS (FOX). Not sure if it was gaffer made or not but it was pretty good. I couldn't finish it because the end was pretty tough. But proud that I made it to the end.

Gonna leave his code if you guys wanna try it 6212-0000-0024-5C49

Hey, uh, if all you're doing is taking a sample level and adding wings to your enemies or filling it with stars... don't worry about uploading that. Take a load off. I have played so many variations on the same level at this point I feel like I'm proving string theory.

I've remade one of my levels because I kind of rushed it last time to get it on the stream last week. I think it has improved a lot.
I could use some feedback, especially on the difficulty.
I loved making it so I hope you all enjoy it. :)

Reposting this for the new page, so far the reception has been great! It's gotten the most stars in the least amount of time, in comparison to my other stages which still get stars, just over time..

I'm really glad the sense of scale is apparent in this level. :)

Big-Tall Mountain
kuXduET.jpg
nmpav75.jpg

Unrelated to the infamous Tall-Tall Mountain portrait of Peach's Castle, Big-Tall Mountain is similar in name alone. It's here we have Mario scaling the outskirts, caves, and cliffside of Mushroom Kingdoms forgotten tower. Where giant mushroom spores accelerate growth to surprising degrees, and those lost forever inside the caverns live on to become shuffling corpses. Can Mario reach the peak?

No amount of smart level design can take stupidity into account.

I get your point but thwomps are designed to be run under. That what a first timer is going to try amd do. They are going to assume convention. If you don' want them to run under it you need to come up with a situation that makes it so ridiculous to attempt while alao making the alternative ridiculously simple as well.

Part of design is understanding people suck finding ways to accomodate it. A bunch of Xs at a first jump imdicate new players or a misjump or a ton of things. As designers we can't just throw shade at the player for not being good. Especially in a game where there is no gradual introduction of mechanics because it is user created

My first time playing a smb3 airship I got crshed by the screen within 3 seconds of the start of the level. I was 5. It's pretty awful that we're circle jerking this "get skills" thing. Everyone starts somewhere.

Hello humans of NeoGAF.

I have built a grotesque portal into the unfathomable abyss of the Ancient Ones perfect recreation of level 1-1 from the video game Super Mario Brothers as commanded by Lord Cthulhu himself by my own volition. It has been made in the exact image of the aforementioned level, down to the very last block. Please try it. It is safe to play for humans of any kind.

Also, while you wait for me to go live at www.twitch.tv/xindicate_gaming you can try my latest stage out :)

Ok, Fixed the stage since it had a few weird things on it.

I don't think I agree with that entirely. The first Thwomp you see in Mario 3 is fairly clearly set up to be jumped over after it falls (note how the player would have died had he not gone into the level already powered up) and the second Thwomp is designed for you to wait and then run under it (this technically applies to the first Thwomp as well). They aren't expressly designed simply for sprinting under like a madman and by design they're first presented as something you need to be patient with, not with haste.
