Xbox One really does take a long time to install games.

My roommate bought an Xbox One today, it's been five hours since we started installing the Master Chief Collection and it is still only 90% done. I can't even comprehend why it takes so long.

I will say, it's great to play Halo: CE's campaign again, couch co-op with a modern console.

It doesn't take long to install, it takes long to install and update; the latter is key to any length problems or so I've seen.

Going offline while installing helps....a little.

I bought a PS4 last week and I am stunned at the difference between install times between the two systems. Every PS4 game I've installed so far has allowed me to start playing within a couple minutes.

Wasn't there a 20gb day one patch? Or something as ridiculously high? That'll be why it's taking so long

To me this seems like an issue caused by two problems:

1) Engineering problem. Sony engineers performed wizardry when it comes to installation. Microsoft engineers did not have the same foresight and didn't implement a system to very quickly install games (and by very quickly I mean within 60 seconds you should start playing any game like on PS4).

2) UI problem / patches: For some reason Microsoft has decided to combine patch updates with game installation. MCC has a 20GB day one patch so of fucking course it will take long to install. There is not a PS4 game in existence that will install quickly if it had to install a 20GB downloaded patch before you could play....

Microsoft has to do two things:

1) Divorce patches from game installation. Make it so the game always installs first, and then the patch installs. This is possible

2) Make base games install as fast as PS4. I don't know if this is possible

it's a 62.7 GB game what he expect? of course something that big would take hours to finish
No. I recently picked up NBA 2k16 on PS4 which is around 50 GB and it installed in like 30 secs. Now updates will depend on your internet and what not but simple installation on the X1 is very slow.

If you're downloading it, it definately takes 5 hours.

Well yeah, if you're downloading the entire thing, sure. I assumed we were talking about installing from the disc, in addition to downloading patches.

If you take your console offline before installing, XB1 games still take far, far longer than they should.

Bullshit. You may have been able to start playing it in 30 seconds, but it sure as hell didn't install in that time. that's one of the things I just can't stand about my PS4, no option for a full install as a default, no I gotta put the disc in, let it do its thing, and check every 10 minutes to see if the game is fully installed yet. So annoying.

True. I think the difference I've noticed though is most XB1 games that are "Ready to Start" after part of the installation rarely are. Most of the time, you cannot get past the main menu.

Then again, I've only installed a few PS4 games so far. They all definitely installed far faster than anything on my XB1 though.

I'm talking about xbox one downloads, ps4 lets you play as soon as possible but you're limited on what you can do until a good chuck of the game is downloaded

Good thing that ready to start from disc and full installation on PS4 are seamless from the user's perspective, but I know you like to complain about anything on PS4.

I agree that with patches includes it will take a hell of a lot longer, which will explain why MCC took a long time to install. I know it does already but I recently re-downloaded ESO yesterday and compared to when I downloaded it day 1 it was significantly longer. Like.. really fucking long.

It's a valid concern regardless of platform, I just wish the option was there you know; what's wrong with options? I'm one of those guys who hates drive noise, so I am the type of person who wants to put the disc in, get shit done, and then play. Every single console I own does things right, does things wrong, and has quirks that could be improved quite simply, nothing wrong with talking about these.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Wait, what? How is that a drawback to be able to play the game faster than a full install?

Ok...so put the disc in and leave it for 5 hours. No disc drive noise.

The game itself was probably finished installing hours ago, you're downloading the patches and that depends on how fast your internet is. MCC also has a huge day 1 patch, so..

The problem is on xbox when you install a disc it will always say "installing" even if it's finished that stage. It never updates to reflect what's actually happening, so people think installs take longer than they actually are.

The option is there, just like you posted. Just wait for it to finish, like any installation ever.

That's what happens when we allow the developers to release broken games that need hundreds of megabytes or even a few gigabytes of patches to work properly. :/ It's not that better on the PS4 from my perspective. I never start the game before the patches finish downloading (and the downloads speeds can be sloooow).

I suppose that if there is a huge patch it makes a bit more sense, but not five hours of sense. It tooks about 45 minutes for me to download Bloodborne on my PS4, so my internet isn't slow enough to make a huge difference I would think.

Oooo-hooo do not bring in PSN speeds to this argument. They are absolute shit to many, gold to us few.

Not really. PS4 has had its share of glitch-filled games in need of patching and they still don't take nearly as long to install as XB1 titles.

It's a fundamental issue with the XB1 hardware. It has nothing to do with patching. Of course those will add to the time needed to install but even if a game requires no online patch and is put on your hard drive directly from the disc, the install times are still insane.

What's your internet speed? My guess would be that MCC requires somewhere between 15-30 minutes to install from the disc. But the game has a lot of patches ... so I'm guessing that if you indeed have a slow download, that's where the other 4.5 hours of your time went...

This is absolute bullshit. I have 2K16 on the PS4, it takes a short time to install quickplay so you can play while it's installing but it ended up taking more than an hour to complete install, that's without any internet updates.

Thank god this was the first post. I don't know how people don't understand this.

Probably because it's completely wrong? XB1 games take longer to install than they realistically should, even if your system is offline. And in my experience, the "Ready to Start" option is mostly worthless and that's assuming you're even given the option to begin with (many games don't allow you to play before it's fully installed).

Worth noting "Installing" also includes any updates downloading as well. The game is only 100% "installed" when all the updates are downloaded and installed as well.

from what i understand, you cant play XB1 games until they are finished fully installing+ patches. Playgo being exclusive to PS4 is what he's talking about

What I meant was I NEVER play a new game before the day1 patch finishes installing. And it can take a lot of time with current PSN download speeds.

I wasn't comparing how the entire install process works. XONE is far worse in this aspect, I won't argue with that.

I think most people have seen your descent into near fanatic-like defense of everything XB1, but you've jumped over the abyss here. The PS4 is the console that gives you the option to play it within a few minutes or leave it to fully install to the HD, the XB1 offers no choice.

Not in all cases. Some games allow you to start before the install has fully completed but in my experience, you can't do much within the actual game until it's fully installed. I'm sure there are some exceptions though.

When I had Gigabit Fibre it took me <15 minutes to download and install the MCC. Also the ready to start function is equally useless on PS4, I don't give a shit about quickplay in NBA2k16 but it's all I can play for more than an hour until my game's installed completely.

You are limited in digital games until they're fully installed, not in disc games.

You're limited in either one. It's not fucking magic people - data can only move off the disc so fast. You might only have one mode available, or have to play the 'starter match' in sports games while it installs...but it's installing. The people who believe it installs the entire disc in 30 seconds drive me nuts.

I'm sure it's useless in some games but the few I've played on my PS4 (just got the system) has allowed me to jump into the full game proper within a few minutes, even though it's still installing.

On XB1, when I install a game, I literally leave the room for 30 minutes. Every time. If I'm lucky, the game will be ready to go when I get back. Note that I buy most of my games in physical form. I have no issue with a digital game taking awhile to download and install.

Edit - I should probably be a bit more clear. I'm sure PS4 and XB1 install times are around the same. But when it comes to being able to PLAY the game, PS4 is much, much, much faster in my limited experience. Maybe I've just gotten lucky so far though with the games I've played on the console.

I haven't said anything about how long the full installation takes.

Same thing happened to me mid last year when I bought an Xbox one. I had about 4 games and couldn't enjoy a single one because they all needed to be updated. It was the first time I've ever been disappointed with a console (out of about 20) on the first day. Even my 360, which broke on the first day playing Perfect Dark, wasn't as bad.

You said you're not limited in disc game installs, which is untrue.

From my experience with a lot of disc games on PS4, it's true. I can play the full game immediately regardless if it's still installing in the background. I haven't met a wait for full installation to finish barrier in any of my disc games, but I don't play sports games, so maybe they restrict you.

This seems like a meaningless distinction. You're still gonna need to do all that at some point if you want to play the game at its best.
