WarHawk PS3 was the most fun multiplayer shooter of all time and we need one for PS4

I'm kinda making this thread in the hopes that there are some of the team that worked on WarHawk for the PS3 around, because I want them to know that they created nothing less than (in my opinion of course) the most fun multiplayer shooter of all time.

Preamble for anyone unlucky enough to have missed it, WarHawk was originally a PS1 arcade flying game by a dev called SingleTrac, part of whom were later bought by Sony and the rest split off to form the now (sadly) defunct Incognito Entertainment, who rebooted the franchise in 2007 for the PS3.

The reboot took a different route and focused on competitive online multiplayer modes in which you could either fly Warhawks, fight on foot or pilot various vehicles. The maps were huge and varied and populated by large numbers of players duking it out in traditional modes like CTF and zones.

Everything about the way it played was pure joy. The way the Warhawks controlled felt better than flying has in any other game I have ever played, after a little while of mastering them you could pull off pretty incredible feats at very fast speeds.

Warhawk was a game where one minute you would be hovering above some infantry, weaving around obstacles to maintain a lock on them, before your alarm systems go off telling you that you're in the sights of an enemy missile, so you flick only our jet propulsion and go from zero to about 100 in a matter of seconds, crossing the huge map, dodging enemy fire and guiding the missiles into a cliff face, then doing a 360 and landing in the middle of enemy territory and jumping out to grab the flag, then escape in a jeep with tanks in pursuit...

I've never had that much fun in a multiplayer game before or since and if there was one single game in the entire world I could bring back on PS4 it would be WarHawk.

None of the complexity of the StarHawk spiritual sequel, just WarHawk PS3 with a new engine, some new maps, some old, new weapons and vehicles, a couple new modes and BOOM: multiplayer shooter of the generation.

I'll leave you guys with some screenshots and a video, and to anyone who worked on this game I salute you, amazing work:

Remembering: Warhawk (PS3)

Starhawk bombed. Not sure if Sony would fund another Dylan game.

It's sad, though, because I had some good times with Warhawk. It was simple yet really fun and somehow relaxing.

Definitely it was the most fun MP I played on PS3.
Also, it has the best airplane mechanics! Easy to understand and very exciting to battle in the air!

I didn't have a PS3 until early 2009 and ended up missing out on Warhawk, but I did try MAG. I could see a new large-scale multiplayer FPS from Sony happening, though. Battlefield 3 and 4 made that sort of multiplayer seem more commercially viable on consoles.

Whenever I played it I always imagined a reskin with a big ip, no mechanic or gameplay changes, something like Star Wars (well we have Battlefront now) or even a future war from Terminator.

It was a great game but I hated the TOW miss le hoes especially in Zones

Yeah, it was pretty damn fun. I couldn't pilot planes worth a damn, so spent my times manning jeeps & tanks, as well as placing prox mines in clever places. Using the jetpack to dashing-knife people was also pretty fun, but by then I had generally moved on.

Warhawk was the worthy replacement for the lack of Star Wars Battlefront last gen. I would love a true sequel.

Too bad Starhawk was a bit of an unfocused mess.

Starhawk could've been a good game with some balance
and maybe some rubber banding.
The team should redeem themselves with a new Warhawk.

You could take 4 splitcreen online with you. Fucking amazing. Wish more games would give us the option.

Absolutely man, playing this with my brother, split screen and online.. Just unreal.

When I imagine what a current gen Warhawk would be like, with more customisation, a new engine and the DS4... *shiver* absolute nerdageddon.

It needs to happen guys. How do we make it happen?

I don't think I put anywhere near the hours on other multiplayer PS3 games like a did with Warhawk. Socom 1 and 2 on ps2 were just as close.

Warhawk PS3 was probably the most fun multiplayer game I've ever played. Teaming up with your buddies in couch co-op splitscreen and challenging the world with them was amazing. It had this cozy feeling when you and your buddies were hiding in the same bunker or riding together in the same jeep.

It needs to happen. Just keep it simple, that's what was great about Warhawk. Everyone had access to all the same stuff with a very clear simple objective. If you died it was usually your fault and not the games.

Highly unique title. I just remember flying around like a boss with my missiles and bombs. I'd have tweaked the shooting a bit, but the game was masterful.

The polished run-and-gun gameplay in Starhawk was a welcome addition, but the world wasn't appealing. I missed the colorful environs of Warhawk. Also, changing the planes so that they can't hover-strafe was a big mistake. They could've found better ways to balance the game than changing one of the most enjoyable mechanics.

I can support this. Warhawk was awesome, even when I only played against one enemy in split screen!

I just mentioned this in a different thread. I don'the think many would take to a remaster, but I'don't personally love it. Oh Lord what a fantastic game. I loved the original music. I was so disappointed when they changed it.

Coming from Warhawk I was really disappointed with the flight mechanics in Starhawk. Nothing could come close to the Warhawk jets.

Warhawk was such a ridiculously great game. Even though it scored pretty well, I think around 85%, I think reviewers were slightly harsh on it since it released in the midst of other great shooters like CoD:MW and Halo 3, but it was so unique that it never mattered to me.

One thing I hated about it were the frequent crashes and server instability, though. Drove me nuts.

I think the ground combat should basically just be ripped from Metal Gear Solid 5. Third person with the ability to go iron sights.

I would be much happier keeping the Starhawk infantry mechanics out of a new Warhawk, I don't like the close up action camera, I want to be able to look around. As someone that played mostly infantry in Warhawk it really hurt my enjoyment in Starhawk with how different it was.

MAG was also really good, 256 players, i remember it all worked perfectly.

It was indeed in that time revolutional, that many players on PS3.

RIP MAG.

I LOVE Warhawk. I put hundreds of hours into it and loved every second of it. The dynamic music, beautiful maps, fantastic controls...it all came together in a glorious package. I found the art style to be gorgeous, as well, though I know it wasn't for everyone.

I feel it was ahead of its time. It was the first "big" game to be digitally distributed on PS4, and I feel as though it was unfairly criticized for focusing only on multiplayer, even though it was cheaper than other games at the time. Today you have MP-only games for $60 and no one bats an eye.

Warhawk holds a very dear place in my heart. It was my most-played game last generation, and I still have Warhawk GAF players on my friends list. One of my favorite games ever.

I agree OP, best multiplayer game of the last generation! Don't know if they'll be able to recapture the magic though. Starhawk was pretty bad..

Star Wars Battlefront is going to be that title. Wait til the expansions come out.

Battlefront is much, much slower than Warhawk. The great thing about that game was that just moved. You could be going from Warhawk, to ground, to tank in a matter of seconds all while shooting like a mad man and/or completing objectives.

The greatest. Popped it in for the first time in a while a few weeks back and remembered why it was so amazing. Surprised to see official servers still up.

We need a remaster/reboot/remake/requel VERY soon.
