From the title I was imagining something like Bridge Commander, with crew management and diplomacy, but this is more like Freelancer, right? Seems neat.

Been trying to buy this game for 15 minutes and steam just keeps saying

"There seems to have been an error initializing or updating your transaction. Please wait a minute and try again or contact support for assistance."

COME ON!

Same here and it's not the first time. It's annoying as shit.

Same thing on this end. Steam wiped my saved payment method too.

I'm not that big of a fan of the space trucker vibe (in this or any game/media) as I prefer more sleek looking spacestuff rather than the blocky, space western frontier designs and ambiance like firefly or starcraft, but it's not a deal breaker. (Firefly was great).

It's kinda cheap here (~$10) so I think I'll buy it, but yea, Steam seems fucked and can't process my payment. Might try tomorrow.

Oh, huh. Thought it was just me. Guess I'll twiddle my thumbs playing something else until Steam fixes itself.

Edit : Working for me now.

Yep, this pretty great so far. Loving the combat.

But whatever genius came up with that attract mode - I wanna shake your hand. I could watch those little spaceships battling away all day. Awesome.

Yep, Freelancer but with a capital ship and on a 2d plane and with permadeath. When you get a very high threat warning you bail out FAST or it's game over lol.

Let me get this straight, you control a proper starship with massive weapons and a action rpg loot type game?

That's exactly it.

Got the game off GOG and played for 3 hours. I died 10 minutes in : got a distress call while warping to the 3rd story mission (still tutorial pretty much) and got gangbanged by a bunch of pirates after i told them to eff off when they asked me to hand over my cargo.

Restarted and played more sheepishly until the 5th or so story mission when a Very High threat ship and it's escorts blew me up. Had just upgraded to the 2nd ship too.

Not gonna lie, permadeath hurts haha. In a way it's a good thing it happened since i gotta wake up in 6 hours anyway. More adventures tomorrow!

If you enjoyed Freelancer back in the day, you have to buy this game.

Only had chance to play an hour tonight, but even in that brief time I've had the Freelancer chills several times (mixed with healthy portions of Firefly to be sure).

Also, this game looks like it might have the best implementation of custom soundtracks ever, letting you slot in tunes for combat, regular cruising, docking at a station, etc, and even having those tunes mixed in with the regular soundtrack if you choose.

Really, really great so far.

I really don't know about the 2d plane.
It's the only thing stopping me from buying this. Why is it 2d? Seems so dumb :/

Let me know if I'm being stupid.

Style choice for combat and travel. I think it's a really smart way to make a very ambitious game, while keeping scale in check for a tiny dev team. The combat works out to be more like naval combat. Maneuvering to get your broadside weapons on target while managing shield quadrants.

I thought it would bother me more but once you're in combat it's not something you miss or think of. Keeping it on a 2D plane makes the combat hectic and fun imho.

Played for a few hours, upgraded my ship, chased my aunt and have basically nothing to complain about.

Definitely recommended!

I completed a difficult mission that took almost 30 minutes, afterwards I head back to a station, but I made the militia hostile somehow and they killed me. Now when I continue it's from a checkpoint from before that last mission. I don't really get why, the lack of manual save control makes this a bit confusing.

Gotcha. I'm kind of on a low point in terms of new games so this definitely comes at the right time. At the price point it is it feels ideal.

As I remember it, I enjoyed Freelancer up until I stopped enjoying it :p I don't know what was it about, but one day I stopped caring and my interest just plummeted to 0. It's weird because that was one of very few games where it happened so drastically, and it bothered me because I remember liking the combat a lot. I think I stopped caring about the universe once I had the rhythm of the mechanics and back and forth down, then ship progression felt super stale.

Custom soundtracks feature sounds great tho. Screw that trucker blues nonsense, time to put my FTL OST to good use!

Wait, this game has permadeath? I have it but haven't had time to play, it didn't say anything about roguelike/lite on the main page. And reading a thread about it the devs said didn't say anything about permadeath. Are you playing on hardcore or something? Anyone confirm?

If you die you get sent back to the station at your last checkpoint.

2 hours logged and I absolutely love this game.

I can't get over how polished it feels. How well it looks, sounds & runs.

I'm so excited that we live in a time when small dev teams can deliver products of this scope & quality at only a fraction of full retail release prices.

Bravo, Double Damage. You knocked it out of the park.

I'm just going to throw my two cents in with the chorus of people here saying that this game is awesome. I'm already hoping for mod support and looking forward to expansions/post launch support. Any small issues that I have are very easy to overlook, at least so far. Great game, DD!

What? That didn't happen to me at all. Every time I died I got ported straight to the new game screen. Hmm. When I first got the game it wouldn't save the graphics options when pressing start, I had to run it as administrator for it to work but I didn't launch it this way beyond the first time. I wonder if it means the saving isn't happening either.

Is this game similar to Skyrim in terms of world exploration? It's open world right?
It's nothing like Skyrim. You fly a spaceship in solar systems, and use warp gates between systems. You remain on the plane of the solar system as you boost around the planets, nebula and points of interest within the system.

Unless you are playing some hardcore mode, then your games should be saving. The devs are pretty active on social media. Try their Facebook page or the steam community pages and they will probably hear your cry for help.

Having a lot of fun so far. Really enjoying it. Best implementation of custom music in a long time. Still in the first system, taking my time trying to beef up my ship.

Must be something with your game. After you die you should be put into main menu when you just click continue and you start the game in the last station you visited.

I put in a few hours tonight. Really joyous to play a privateer type game again for the first time in over a decade. Definitely strikes the right notes.

Man, it's hard not to get greedy and try and tick off too many missions and get yourself killed, losing progress. Just makes me dig my heels in more. Damn bounties.

Travis Baldree is very active answering questions in the Rebel Galaxy thread on Quartertothree.com if anyone wants to ask him a question.

How is the game's progression structured? Seen some people compare it to Sid Meier's Pirates, but some call it linear with a main quest?

Snagged this thing last night but didn't get to play it yet. Between the price, premise, good word-of-mouth and watching the quick look on GB, there wasn't much hesitation.

There is very much a main quest, but you can petty much ignore it from the get go if you want to just fly off and be a trader / bounty hunter / pirate / hired gun.

(You should probably do the first mission or two though, as it gets you some pretty expensive kit for not much effort)

Got this last night (well, early this morning). Really great so far, but did run into a nasty bug or two that made me have to restart. Otherwise enjoying it a lot.

Flying around during the first mission and saw a distress beacon and went to investigate. The attacking ship was way too tough for me, so I took a few missile and laser hits before both me and the person under attack could flee. Once we were away, he sent me 9k credits for the help.

I thought it was really cool, since I couldn't really do much, but I guess I created enough of a distraction for him to flee. I got a nice reward (at my early level) that let me better equip my ship.

is this well playable with a mouse? after the disaster of the battlefront starship mouse controls I thought I'd rather ask.

This game is fantastic! I guess that shouldn't surprise me given its pedigree. The graphics are nice, but the sound design in particular is phenomenal. Really excellent effects and a brilliant licensed soundtrack.

It's crazy that this was mostly made by two people.

dofry

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
I watched this on Twitch yesterday and the music is great! Would definitely buy if i had any extra money, even at 20€ i can't afford this.

It's disappointing in a way and doesn't feel like a space flight game at all as a result, but it's still fun. It's just fun as a weird space skin over a naval game.

Full disclaimer, I have yet to play this game.

Sometimes taking away the full 6 degrees makes it easier to focus on the game. For example, EVE online is just a submarine simulator, but it helps the player focus on the gameplay instead of navigation.

Not knocking space flight games at all, as the flying is the gameplay, but for an RPG, I imagine the 2D helps.

As someone who has played more complicated space combat games I much prefer this style of space combat than something like EVE which can be headache inducing complicated sometimes.
