It seemed like the other threads were either too subtle or too obvious to bring out such clumsy posts. Maybe they thought they were in the OT and nobody would notice. I miss the "I don't care about Gg one way or the other but..." level.

PM speaks out against online misogyny and harassment, and outspoken fans of the medium attempt to minimize the problem, divert blame, or claim with straight faces that there is no problem. C'mon, folks.

I find it funny that gamergater depict themselves as the only "real fans" of games. When I'm a fan of something, I want it to improve in every way possible, not get stupidly angry whenever a problem is brought up.

This. Turning a blind eye to such problems only allows them to grow. Denying the problems exist doesn't make them go away, it just prolongs them.

I find kind of funny that this cool guy is against misogyny in videogames.
I mean, many gamers are rude with women because they're frustrated about not getting laid. Meanwhile this guy clearly scored on regular basis.
Those people don't get laid and then get angry. Now they're also lectured by the most popular kid in school. lol

Sadly, this tends to describe how gaming fans in general react to criticism.

Guess who have something to say on this.

So now we've got Dyack along side Derek Smart and Running With Scissors for game dev hacks who get on bandwagons for fame.

New PM seems like a dope dude.
As someone who voted for him, I'm already getting a bit of pandering vibe off him. When someone says all the right things it's either the honest truth or a complete lie. So we'll see. I do like what I saw, but we've all been wrong before.

You know, to be honest, I enjoy and love NeoGAF so much that I worry about posting something that first comes to mind or from the heart because I might get banned.

That being said, I just simply don't know why this gamergate stuff is such a big deal. I really don't. I wish I could understand. But I don't get it. That doesn't mean it's not important. That doesn't mean it's stupid or an overblown issue. But I simply don't get it. And If I don't.. then there is others who don't.

Why in the world do we need a world leader to focus their attention on this? Bigger issues in the world, or most-likely in their own country than worrying about gamergate.

Not knowing something is fine. Ignorance is not.

You also misunderstood what he said. He said:
“The things we see online, whether it is issues like gamergate or video games misogyny in popular culture, it is something that we need to stand clearly against.”, not that he wants to deploy the canadian army against GamerGate. He wants to fight online harassment and mysogeny, including, but not limited to GamerGate, a movement with a history of executing, supporting, excusing and ignoring online harrassement.

He is.
it's definitely not his young staff keeping him in the loop.
He probably knows on his own. Like, for example, we know that he knows about GAF.

He said this last month. It was only dug up yesterday.

He seriously isn't "focussing his attention" on this. This is a quote from a way longer interview about women issues. He doesn't promise to do anything concrete about it, he just states that gamergate is terrible.

Not knowing something and Ignorance is the same thing, is my understanding. Not that I ran to dictionary.com to cover my bases mind you.

Online Harassment. Ok. I still don't get it? I don't get why that's a big deal? I obviously want to understand, otherwise I wouldn't post on this. But I don't get it.

Even though I'm putting words in your mouth, your statement leads me to believe "oh ok, so basically he was just talking a 'whole-lot-of-nothing' to get some more support, votes, or whatever.

You don't understand what is wrong with online harassment? It's not exactly rocket science.

In a way, yes, I guess you can interpret it that way. Doesn't mean what he says is wrong however.

You probably have never been harassed, known anyone who was harassed, or even read the numerous harassment accounts articles out there huh?

The way I see it, not knowing is what you usually do with all topic until you know. Knowledge isn't inherent. Ignorance is the refusal of leaving the not knowing status.

And ... to clarify: you don't get what the trouble with online harassement is?

He was responding to a question based on comments he made about the topic of violence against women. Read the article.

Having the swat team knock down your door and have guns pointed at your head because some dipshit reported you as a prank is kind of a big deal

No, he's just talking about how he feels in an interview.
I personally kind of like living in a country where the new Prime Minister's Mom used to get busy with Mick Jagger.

What country do you live in?

I never would have thought that something as specific as gamergate would be mentioned by a politician in something for a general audience.. Toghether with the UN thing, it seems people needed to need something more specific than the faceless "online harrassment/bullying" or "twitter shitstorm" to take it a bit more seriously or rather: there's a clear "evil" to fight now.

I just hope the momentum is kept should GG finally crumble.

To make it simple, harassment = bad.

And that's just enough to drive Gaters into a shit-flinging rage. They should be more worried about how the TPP will essentially online anonymity.

Because you're sincerely curious, I'll try to explain it as well as I can.

People cannot communicate on the internet without having other people make death threats, racial and sexual slurs just because they have a different opinion. And when you get this kind of shit almost every time you make a post, that can be psychologically devastating.

There are many, many places to land between "a laser-like focus exclusively on gamergate" and "talking a whole lot of nothing."
