Nintendo Strategy Briefing 2015 thread (Nintendo discusses smartphone title Miitomo)

So yeah, they made a game centered on Japan first. It looks like a promising attempt for that market. I thought people didn't want to play the big IPs on phones?

Things like Wario Ware is gonna have far less appeal to the Japanese market than something similar to Tomodatchi.

Yeah I really have no idea what people were fully expecting in terms of Nintendo's first foray into mobile money making. The Mii concept is as marketable as they come in terms of Nintendo's infrastructure while maintaining the social elements that Japan loves to utilize. As a gateway game it makes perfect sense.

Sure, but they're still developing these mobile games themselves, with help from DeNA.

NX is likely their bigger focus though, no doubt.

Yeah I'm not disagreeing I just sort of expected this mobile thing to be a SERIOUS push for the company. And while its clear they are putting some effort into it, it appears the company is still more invested in console gaming by far. Even going as far as to say the purpose of the mobile games is to get people to go out and buy Nintendo's hardware.

I guess the good news for those who were worried about if Nintendo was putting serious effort into NX or mobile its been answered. NX is priority number 1 for the company

I really can't believe ppl are making a big deal about the stock. This happens all the time. Investors short stocks just before meetings to make a quick profit then rebuy the stocks the following day. I'm sure it will go right back up in the next day or 2.

I suppose many "concerned" GAF members are in fact the stock holders.

That was the whole deal from the beginning...

If the idea is to use the mobile games to draw people into their console ecosystem and encourage them to buy-in, how does a Mii game accomplish that? Who's buying a $200-$300 console to use a Mii?

Miitomo gives me faith that Nintendo won't be ditching the Wii branding for the NX

Mii =/= Wii. Think for a bit before posting.

Miis were never going to just up and disappear, the pun is not intrinsically tied to Wii.

nintendo's mobile output will focus on casual audience. WOAH WHAT THE FUCK NINTENDO

this is everyone right now. People literally builds themselves up to be disappointed.

oh noooo they didn't announce a new f-zero whyyyy

exactly people should be happy that the mobile game isnt something for them, that should tell them that Nintendo core games will be all on console

people were expecting an actual game. A spinoff, or maybe something like hearthstone would've been interesting. I just don't see this succeeding tbh

March 2016:

  1. My Nintendo (Club Nintendo replacement)
  2. First Smart Phone Game Miitomo

Unknown: "Nintendo Account" ? When is that being released or updated?

People want Nintendo to stay away from mobile, then when Nintendo gets into mobile, they want Super Mario Galaxy 3 out of it.

On the reason for the delay of the smartphone app, Mr. Kimishima says, is the need for more lead time to fully promote and explain Miitomo. The company is busy promoting other titles in the pipeline right now, he says. It will start promoting Miitomo after the year-end holiday season. Says this will have little impact on earnings.
.

People like the game, not the Miis themselves. I don't know anyone that likes that Miis.
The game...uses Miis. Part of the appeal of the game was watching a little you and little people you know communicate with each other. That was pretty much the whole point of the game. That's the whole point of this cell phone game. I don't know why you don't think the popularity would translate.

The fact that you don't know anyone doesn't mean shit. Miis are super identifiable, loads of people know them and their simplicity allows for great originality and versatility. Abandoning Miis would be really stupid and using them and a Streetpass like system on a phone is a no brainer.

This has to be a joke, right?

We heard almost nothing from Nintendo since last E3. We know almost nothing about Animal Crossing : amiibo Festival and other than posting a trailer of Mario Tennis, they haven't shown done anything to promote the game.

I think Miitomo is to get people on the new account system primarily. I would assume it's a multi-step process.

Curious about how the DeNA and Nintendo partnership is going. Senior Managing Director Shigeru Miyamoto says DeNA will focus on operation of the games. Which suggests game design is all Nintendo.

Good

I hope nintendo takes notice of the fact that when Miimoto was mentioned their company value dropped 8%.

They'd need to actually announce and produce good games/ products and stop delaying everything.

Always follow a simple rule : buy on rumors, sell on news.

Makes sense. It will easily get lost in the Holiday shuffle.

Well they're probably not going to just make Mario and Kirby platformers for cell phones. This is kind of like saying that no one is going to buy Fallout 4 because Fallout Shelter exist.

The problem with your analogy: Fallout Shelter is aimed primarily at people who are already active gamers on PS4/XB1/PC.

Nintendo's mobile games are aimed primarily at people who have lapsed from dedicated devices entirely, if they've ever played them at all.

"Oh boy, those F2P Mario and Kirby games made that subway trip fly by! I sure would love to spend $200 on new hardware so I can play $60 games featuring those characters!"

I'm not sure how much they actually believe this and how much of this is spin meant to exude confidence in the future of their hardware business, but either way, it's delusional nonsense.

Not really different from cross media properties, which have been a pretty successful endeavour this generation. It's pretty much free marketing as well.

I wouldn't say the idea of using smart devices, movies, and theme parks to increase the popularity of their ips is delusional, though it makes sense to question how many people would actually be converted.

We'll see, apparently Tomodachi Life had some success, and Nintendo said they weren't going to be fully fledged games, even a spin-off was a little far fetched as expectations.

People want Nintendo to stay away from mobile, then when Nintendo gets into mobile, they want Super Mario Galaxy 3 out of it.

Yes, even when Nintendo said they won't do that...

Perhaps nobody will convert, but even all that stuff might bring money to them.

They can do something similar to the Mii Plaza on 3DS where they put like 3 full free games but you can also buy more games that could be themed after their core franchises.
