Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

It is a 2 disc game, which last we heard, were still being worked on. So, until they figure the multidisk thing out then it's unlikely

Which has already been repackaged as a single GoD download (and was previously featured as a GwG freebie). ;)

The "2 disc" issue is a non issue for games like Witcher 2 and Assassins Creed III that have already been reissued as single GoD images.

Thread title is awesome. Really smart and witty. Only a genius could have come up with it.

Can't wait to download dirt 3 on the 12th and load up forza 6.

Cabin Defenders by Microsoft Labs in the Backwards Compatibility video? I don't think there was any new information in this video.

I just want:

and with luck and time:

Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon

I really want Shadows of the Damned too, but it will never happen.

LO and Blue Dragon will both be coming. All Microsoft published, non-Kinect focused, games will be coming. It's just a matter if they figured out the multiple disc issue.

I'm pretty sure there's even a single disc version of The Witcher 2 on 360 avaiable at retail.

Edit - Here it is

What if i own it on disc though? It makes me put in my disc, so if I put one disc in, will I never need to put the second in?

I guess I'm a little confused about how that works (?)

Really no way to tell yet. I'll be really interested in something like LA Noire. That was made into a GoD download, but it came out on 3 DVDs. Will the Xbox One enforce putting in the first disc, or will any disc do? If any disc will do, then that one copy just became three.

Mass Effect 2 & 3 are featured in deals with gold right now, are they to be supported as BC titles? Mass Effect is mentioned in the OP.... Now I am wondering if they are going to be remastered which would be better for me since I haven't played any of the games yet :)

I bet disc swapping just like you did on the 360 is the way they handle it. It makes the most sense.

No one uses it? lol. I've been playing the hell out of Super Meat Boy and I'll fire up Gears 3 when it releases. Also, Nier was recently pointed out to me, so if that is added I'll definitely grab it.

Each disc has a separate identifier.

The most likely scenario is that MS defaults to using the game disc (or just Disc 1 of multidisc sets) to serve as the BC license. That disc will download the BC version of the game (GoD wrapped in the emulator and game art) while the other discs will likely just pop the "not compatible" error.

There would be no easy way (or practical reason really) to enforce a disc swap.

Something that the new Major Nelson backwards compatibility video brings up is that he mentions that it downloads the game, rather than installing from the disc. So does that mean the game has to be available digitally, at least at first? A lot of these games we're hoping for might not come up until later rounds when they start going for disc-only games.

Each BC game has a download package made to work.

Wow you have some really good games to play then even if they're last gen titles.

All I want really are my digital only titles supported. I despise the notion that because they're on last gen they're worthless. Sony and Microsoft should be ashamed they didn't think that BC was important

That has always been the case, it is downloading a special digital version with the emulation wrapper, I don't think it matters if it was ever available as a digital version in the past.

Ah, okay, that's where I went wrong. I figured he meant that it had to be digital, at least for the first games on the list. Digital wrappers sounds better!

The "special digital version" is a standard GoD package wrapped in the Xbox 360 emulator and the Xbox One title specific bits (ex Title identifier, package art, splash screen art, etc.).

Games which are already available in digital form have already passed cert as GoD releases and would be easier to process.

Games which do not yet exist in digital form would have that extra step of getting converted to GoD titles and certed before getting packaged as a BC title.

If you suddenly see an older title show up as a GoD title in the Xbox 360 store, there's probably a good chance it's coming to BC.

I'd say it's likely a large majority of games that are currently available either as Games on Demand or XBLA will eventually be compatible. Barring instances where there might be technical issues getting it to run or where it may interfere with sales of a new gen version/remaster.

Otherwise, the rights holder is obviously happy for the title to be sold digitally. Why wouldn't they want it purchasable and playable on an additional platform for no effort? One issue that occurs to me is that with a digital 360 game that becomes BC, suddenly ownership of that game equates to 3 licenses instead of 2 (2 "home console", 1 "roaming"). With one purchase, up to 3 different accounts could be playing online together simultaneously. Some publishers may not like that.

Games that were never released digitally, or games that were pulled from digital, are much less of a chance IMO. If the rights holder was willing/able to sell it digitally it would likely already be available on the 360 storefront.

Good call.

There are a few odd ones that have just shown up on games on demand

Fifa 13
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
Overlord

Although I think it would have been leaked at this point, I'd love for the 2 disc problem to have been solved without an announcement and a few of those games be announced next week as a suprise.

I had noticed that Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 appeared recently as GoD, but I thought Activision wasn't on board ?
I'd be tempted to double dip on the first one and try the second, even if they're a bit expensive for older games (40€ each !)

Don't see how that information would have been leaked? Its only important to those specifically after multidisk games, and even then I don't know if the problem is big enough to actually make someone risk leaking it. Actually, I don't even think anybody would care enough to specifically leak that bit of information.

I played and finally finished Battleblock Theater via BC. Absolutely loved it. Now that I've sold my 360 I'll eventually get to smash through my backlog of games I never got around to.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 were delisted a long time ago, relisted recently, totally makes sense they have been re-listed to sell via BC.

I figured someone would have noticed a Microsoft employee playing one of them due to more thorough testing, but you may be right.

There are a core group of people here who don't want Activision to be on board...

After putting off voting for a while, I finally went and voted for some titles a week or two ago. I voted for a couple late-gen games that I was waiting to see if there would be Xbone ports of: Assassin's Creed Rogue, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and Fable Anniversary. As soon as they announce that those are BC, I will buy copies.
After that, I really don't mind what gets on the list so long as most everything eventually is BC.

True, I had forgot about that.

Still, i'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best, as I already went out and bought a copy of Lost Odyssey not that long ago.
