Thorani's ok. No Parasouls, Fillias, or Valentines though. u.u

OK? Thonari is just "ok"???

What is wrong with you!?

Also, Razmi is the cutest thing.

I presume the final push will be like 400-500k if we assume that people are holding back because of indiegogo' immediate charge. But that's just a dumb unqualified guess.

I also feel the campaign is lacking the waifu wars aspect from Skullgirls.

It might have been a good idea to monetise that, in hindsight. Something between DOAX3's paid voting and Mighty No. 9's design polls for female characters could have worked, producing several designs for characters like Thorani, Phoebe, Yan and Razmi that hit common archetypes and fetishes; which could be voted between with higher pledges boosting votes' strength.

Eh, the character designs of several unrevealed characters are already out. It's on their forums.
But I seriously hope there aren't people that choose to pick or to not pick up a game for liking the design of one character.

I got into Blazblue almost entirely because of Taokaka, with next to no knowledge of the game's specifics.

I bought Xrd for Elphelt and got into League of Legends for Sona. OTL

This might be the difference Ravi couldn't figure with the Skullgirl fans and why they're not flocking to this.

But realistically, it's on the same level of window shopping. You see a cute dress you like in the window, so it ends up making you decide to check the store out. Same theory here. It just kinda echoes the market and the publisher concerns of what sells and what doesn't, despite it not sounding so progressive. Or at least in the west, as based off his comments above, Eastern developers were more welcome to the idea of such a protag. Money speaks, and that's what the fate of this project is relying on.

And yes to above that Razmi is cute.

Oh my god, I just realized, Ravi said himself when he was looking at peoples skullgirl profiles for RPG players etc . . . He did mention seeing Neptunia. Oh boy.

This sort of thing would be really two-faced for what Indivisible otherwise is and represents, and would invite a ton of criticism. Wouldn't be worth it for a lot of reasons.

The criticism could be downplayed by giving the alternate designs their own names and slightly different backstories, superficially bringing it closer to Skullgirls' DLC voting. I agree that it'd destroy any remaining trace of the game's artistic integrity and dilute the design of the entire project, but it might have helped generate some more enthusiastic donations. And there's no guarantee the current supporters would have abandoned the game for going in that direction, either.

Lab Zero says they need money from us on top of a publisher to make this work. Why not find a publisher who will just fund the whole thing?
Because by doing so they endanger the IP, their original vision for the game and artistic integrity by having a major publisher (who are not creators) take part in the creative process of the game. I don't know if you're required to be an artist to understand that better but there are developers out there who wish to have that creative freedom.

Why is the publisher requiring a 1.5 million dollar bribe?
Less like a bribe and more like Lab Zero just fulfilling their end of the contract by having the necessary funds to reach their budget. I may be completely wrong here but my theory is that this is not even about "interest gains" or none of that stuff but a very simple deal between two parties who have agreed to split the costs with the success of the final product seen more or less as an afterthought.

505 seems to respect L0's wishes to create the kind of game they want to make, but by doing so they can't fully fund the project because respectfully, they still want to protect their own interests. So, in exchange for the creative freedom 505 is willing to fund most of the game's development and asking L0 to fund the rest. Not as to prove a point that there is a demand for this type of game but to pay their employees' salaries for roughly a year and make this one particular game a reality. I think it's something as simple as that.

Even with my crackpot theories, 505's flexibility (mentioned on the IGG campaign) is unprecedented for a publisher, probably making this the best possible deal Lab Zero could have.

How much control of the project does the publisher have?
Probably very little, if any if the IGG page is to be believed. Whether or not you see that as a bad thing or not is totally up to you.

What do they get out of the relationship?
A hell of a lot of goodwill and some profit? And even if the game gets funded but bombs tremendously, I have a feeling 505 will be fine after their (estimated) 2.5 mil investment. Games not breaking even is not entirely unheard of after all.

unlike Yooka Laylee getting a publisher after a very successful campaign, but I don't think concern is unreasonable here.
Funny, because I think one of the first things they addressed was that they had additional funding, hence why they were asking for so little. And yes they did aquire a publisher later but iirc that was only for distribution purposes.

The situation with Yooka Laylee was that they already had the money to produce the game themselves. The crowdfunding's goal to expand the scope, but Yooka Laylee was always going to happen in any case.

I see many people claiming that this would be easily funded on Kickstarter but I have my doubts. It would probably do better, for sure, but that much better? $1.5 million is a lot to raise on any platform, especially for a niche 2D RPG that's a new IP with no nostalgia or celebrity names backing it up.

I would've said Muv Luv but you said no nostalgia. Granted the genre it's in is a far bigger niche.

Even then that game was funded by only 7000 people that simply donated huge amounts.

That is a sign of a well run campaing though. People only gave a lot of money because the value they were getting was pretty incredible and only grew with stretch goals over time.

I never backed a KS for that much but $80 for digital + (limited) physical copies of 2 games is insane value.

Hope there are PS4 & Vita physical releases of Skullgirls before going kaput, and a toggle switch between censored and uncensored from whatever was changed. Never played or watched videos, just heard about it a lot.

It's not shady at all. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a deal like this.

People really like to find reasons to complain.

And yeah, they didn't put where exactly the money would go because that's not how things work. The money is spent on man-hours, not 'yeah lets use 100k on this character'

Uh oh first they came for Shenmue, now they come for Indivisible.

Seriously, do publishers still say things like this?

Unfortunately yes. We pitched a project to a few publishers and one of them told us that the main character would have to be changed to white because having a black character wouldn't make it a Triple AAA title. I just shook my head and almost told them to get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.

Yeah, GTA San Andreas was pretty B-tier.

I'm feeling really good at crossing the half-way point around the final week. We'll be past the big hump and ready to take on the final days in, hopefully, as crazy a manner as possible.

Write angry emails to who? They couldn't out who these publishers are. Not only is it unprofessional but it would absolutely jeopardize their relationships

Also folks don't forget Sleeping Dogs went thru a similar change. It used to have a female Asian lead, but was changed to a male for marketing purposes.

Thorani was basically 50% of my reason for backing.

Alright, it sounds like the guest characters are going to be a lot more optional than the rest of the cast, but would a more sexualized err say Toko drive away people? More than it'd potentially bring in a choice your favorite design or something?
Still, respect to Lab Zero for doing what they want, not taking compromises from publishers or backers.

Hey, I didn't say appealing characters don't matter, just playing/backing something or not solely because of one character design.

Woah I never heard of that. I would have loved to play a Sleeping Dogs with a female Asian lead.
