Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Anyone having issues indoors with combinations of fog and light causing GPU usage spikes? The game runs maxed around 50-60% GPU usage outdoors, but sometimes I will be looking in a certain direction with light/fog in my vision and GPU usage cranks up to 100% and locked 60fps drops to around 50fps. This is with a 980@1510Mhz. Maybe using borderless windowed is causing this? I use that to alleviate stuttering, I will try exclusive full screen with .ini Vsync disabled and enable it through NVCP and test that setup as well.

Other than that small issue the game has been running great for the 4 hours I've played it.

You're a god among men. This completely eliminated my studdering and it's soooooo much better now.

No worries, just standard bethesda game fixes people have been doing for a while now.

Yeah, exact same spot. I posted earlier about it. It's not the only spot like that either, most city areas have that slowdown.

Does this get ride of the massive frame drops in the cities? Like near the Corvega factory (~30FPS drop on top of the factory) or in most city situations.

Nah, this just enables a better vsync solution, removes windowed mode stutter and reduces input lag. Any frame drops are on the graphics settings or unoptimized area in the game.

Stutter free game for me required:

1. Disabling ingame vsync in falloutprefs
iPresentInterval=0

2. Enabling exclusive fullscreen mode in falloutprefs
bBorderless=0
bTopMostWindow=0
bMaximizeWindow=0
bFull Screen=1

3. Enable Nvidia Vsync (not adaptive).

4. 60 fps RTSS limit for a bit less mouse input lag.

This is if you can run 60 fps all the time. If you can't, then remove the RTSS limit, or set it to 61, and enable adaptive vsync. If you have gsync then just step 1 and 2 will suffice. Also disable mouse accel in fallout4.ini bMouseAcceleration=0 , it adds a stupid amount of mouse lag.

Thanks, I'll give this a try when I get home

Why am I still at work again

For those running God Rays on High, can I ask why? I can see a difference between Ultra and the other settings, but Low, Medium and High are practically identical to the eye.

I can see no reason not to stress to everyone to put God Rays on Low to help with performance. The only even slightly noticeable difference with God Rays is Ultra, and you have to be looking for it.

Save those precious FPS! LOW.

So compared to stuff like Skyrim, this game will need more GPU power than CPU?

Got a i5-4670k with a GTX760, what kind of settings would I need to play to achieve constant 60 fps?

Thank you so much dude. This completely fixed the stuttering problem from what I can tell. I really, truly appreciate it. :)

Damn, I'm hopeful it can be patched out! Getting 30 FPS on a 970 at 1080p sucks!

Been tinkering around to get a decent balance between quality and frame rate

Windows 10 64-bit
i7-3610QM @ 2.3 gHz
16GB RAM
GTX 660M

Currently have my settings set to this
5fdaf1101a10b450e87fb79724103b74.png

93353b806b7147f6fba20a0c19b34b57.png

(Vsync is on because I did the iPresentInterval=0 ini tweak)

I seem to be getting around 40-45 FPS consistently like this, anyone have any more tips or tweaks to boost it up to 60? Some setting worth turning down for the added FPS?

Anyone have an ultra low ini? My friend is running on a toaster and is having some issues. The game is pretty playable, but he gets 15-20 seconds of freezing when moving into a new area. He has a core 2 duo and a r7 250.

So I succumbed to the hype and got Fallout 4 and it's running surprisingly well on medium settings even tho my PC's specs are pretty outdated:

I took out godrays but any tips for making the game run more smoothly on low end hardware would be greatly appreciated.

just had some nasty drops to the low 40s (maybe to the 30s) in a particular hectic fight

sidequest spoilers
the ghouls attackinmg the police station

its been pretty good so far, pretty much 60 or 55-60, whatever. Running on a i5 4690k, 16gb ram, 2 x gtc970 (which is moot because SLI aint working) with everything on ultra except godrays on high (basically what it auto detected). Any tips to avoid these big dips? I hear it gets much more hectic later on or near the end so if I can avoid it, well, I will

edit: oh and 1080p, no downsampling

With everything @ ultra on 1080p (except god rays, they're on high - seems to have huge impact on performance), there is consistent 60 FPS with two machines, both have an i7-4790k @ 4.2ghz and one with a MSI 970 4GB and another a 980.

In this one particular area, both machines drop from 60 FPS to 40 FPS if I look at the same certain area in a room (in a corner). For the most part it runs just fine in most places, there's just these odd little areas where it doesn't sometimes.

Never seen it go below that though.

Is is a drop due to extremely high GPU usage? Getting the same in the first large interior scene looking at certain areas with light/fog.

I've noticed it too with the 980. I've only played the intro tough, but for example when you're in the overseers office and you look at the desk and the skeleton it will stutter a little.

Uh, I can't turn godrays off? Even if I set them to bNvGodraysEnable=0 in Fallout4.ini, the Launcher shows "Low". Anyone else having this issue?

Running on all High settings with Textures at Ultra (can't see a difference though) and God Rays at Low. I made the suggested improvements from the Nvidia guide in terms of distant object detail, grass fade and shadow distance, but from what I've tested so far, only the grass fade had a considerable improvement in terms of LoD. Shadow distance was only very slightly better. I couldn't see any difference whatsoever when trying to double the distance object detail, which makes me think I messed up somewhere. Dunno. Haven't tried messing with uGrids because I'm scared of fucking my game up. >.<

Game looks good and so far, a perfect 60 even with those tweaks. I've only just got to the first area after you leave the vault though, so I'll keep trying it out for a bit.

I hear people with 970's are getting solid 60fps with god rays on low but later in the game in the urban areas it's dropping to 40's.

Are there any other expensive settings that can be dialed down with minimal impact like god rays?

Oddest problem I've seen, game starts up fine but when I click on new game and confirm it crashes without any notice/reason it doesn't even seem to start.

Tried Window mode, with and without borderless, full screen, lowering the settings, running in compatability for windows 7 with run as admin (I'm on Windows 8), have the latest drivers, and still keeps doing it.

Very very frustrating.

I have a GTX 970 with drivers updated, going to keep trying to mess with it but aI've seen a lot of crashing problems but haven't seen a lot of people with the issue I'm having.

Is there an iFPSclamp variable in one of the INI files? That always got rid of stuttering for me in previous Bethesda games.

I also had a lot of success with fpsclamp in skyrim.

In FO4 I was getting a micro stutter every time I look around while moving. Went into fallout4.ini and added iFPSClamp=60 in the general section. Glad to say it completely killed the stutters for me! Im very happy about it.

So, anybody getting stuttering while moving around, try the above. Works a treat and wont hit your FPS like borderless window mode.

I need some settings help on resolution. I'm not a pc gamer, so I'm sort of clueless.

When I start the game, the setup tool only give me 2 options: 800x400 and 1280x720 for my native 1920x1080 monitor. If I use the .ini to set to native and full screen(or windowed) it looks really strange and sort of pixelated. Any ideas?

Edit: NM, I think I have it sorted

Fallout4.exe or fallout4LAUNCHER.exe ?? What is the target program? Sorry, new to this.

NEVERMIND OH GOD IM SO EMBARRASSED IT DID BOTH

What is your rig?

Also, where have you seen that reported in the thread? I seem to have missed it.

970, old i7. And I based that on my own reports with what I managed to capture of data. Game is using 90+ of my GPU while minimized or not on focus (borderless window), then drops to 30-40 when I'm focusing on it.

Did anyone else try this flag? Doesn't seem to be working for me

Someone claims he found a working flag for the game, I can't confirm since I don't have the game yet but you can try it out and see if it works :)
"Found a flag for Fallout 4. It's 0x00140000 (lords of the fallen) flag. Works pretty well for me so far. I'll have to test further as it's late, but others can try it out. On windows 7 fyi " -syklonis

Do you have the beta patch installed?

Steam > Library > Right click 'Fallout 4' > Properties > Betas > 1.1.30 Beta Update

Solves a lot of CTDs from the sounds of things.

Alright, here goes.

AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE 3,2Ghz
AMD HD 7870 OC edition 2GB
8GB of Memory
Windows 7

The game is running at 40-50ish fps most of the time, from exploring the wasteland to the little towns like Concord. It managed to hold low 40s with some drop to 30s in the town where the raider factory is located. That's the lowest deep I've ever seen so far.

Settings and screen:

Thanks!
I've also just tried scaling the shadow quality to high and there's almost no performance impact, great. The shadow distance is the one that is killing my performance. Even on high, it's dipping to 30-40 fps most of the time. Well, I guess I'm more than happy with this outcome, nonetheless.

What's the command for getting rid of motion blur?

I have my .ini's set to Read Only so it means whenever I start the game up and try to disable it, it just reenables. Guessing I'd have to do it from within an ini but I can't find a specific motion blur setting to set to 0. All I can see is

bDoRadialBlur=1

in the Fallout4.ini, and

[BlurShaderHDR]
bDoHighDynamicRange=0
[BlurShader]
bUseBlurShader=0

in the Fallout4Prefs.ini

Is it radial blur?

I'm not sure WTF is going on. Gsync isn't limiting frames, seemingly only some version of vsync in the game does. If I set my monitor's refresh rate to 60hz in the Nvidia control panel, it limits the FPS to 60 but the game is juttery as fuck with awful input lag. It does fix the terminal glitch, though.

It doesn't seem like Gsync is actually doing anything, because if I don't have my monitor at 60hz, then my frames will jump into the thousands on the intro video and title...if Gsync were active it shouldn't go above 144.

Trying to use Nvidia inspector hasn't done much but break the game more it seems...

For anyone who's running a similar build:
i7-4770k
GTX 760 2GB
16GB RAM

I've got the game on the HIGH preset with all the distance sliders, except Actor Fade, at max.

Getting easily above 30fps, so you can cap it there. I'm more or less getting a consistent 50+fps. There are drops to 40-45 fps however.
