I skipped the whole hype train this time (too busy playing Legacy of the Void), but some quick reactions:
- Fire Emblem in February was the biggest thing out of the show for me. I rarely buy CEs even for my favourite series, and was planning to go digital, but this is one instance where I may be swayed. I'm unclear on whether Revelations (the third campaign) is free or a separate DLC purchase when you buy both Birthright and Conquest for $40+$20; can anyone familiar with the Japanese release provide insight?
- Cloud is the face of Square, but sticks out as a character whose game never appeared on a Nintendo platform, even more so than Snake (who had Twin Snakes). But the big middle finger to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is appreciated.
- The few seconds of the new Zelda are beautiful and reassuring.
- Something I'm already curious about re: Twilight Princess is if it will have support for both GameCube and Wii controls, and if so, whether it will follow the GCN version in supporting left-handed Link in the game's original (not flipped) orientation. I don't expect this to be the case at all (GamePad-only play is likely to stick with right-handed Link and the flipped world, I think), but I do wonder.
- Given Star Fox being pushed all the way to April, and that I'm not interested in Pokken, the picture for the Wii U doesn't look any better than it did in E3. I'm guessing SMTxFE/GIRFE will be coming late in the year, but I have my doubts that shoving it under the rug digitally like Fatal Frame has been ruled out. But at least some of the "Zelda will be taken off Wii U and moved to NX" doomsayers have been shown the door.
- Super Mario Maker discovery features are appreciated, and I play the game with a second screen open for codes and level browsing as it is, but more of these features in-game would have been nice.
- The Splatoon museum map is wonderful (if a little terrifying for someone who has actually worked with museums to see the wanton ISIS-style vandalism on display).
- I really wish the additions to Hyrule Warriors Legends would be offered as DLC or otherwise patched into the Wii U original, as I have zero intention of double-dipping. But the Linkle introduction video was conspicuously at console-grade resolution before it moved into gameplay footage, so maybe this will come at a later date?
- Of the third party and indie offerings, I would have liked to know if Image & Form are still porting SteamWorld Heist to the Wii U in HD post-release like they did for Dig, but barring any announcements I will probably grab Heist at launch for 3DS.
So: my 2016 shopping list remains unchanged. Fire Emblem, Star Fox (though with an April release I won't be able to play it until summer), Zelda late in the year, possibly Bravely Second and GIRFE. Nothing new from the show for me. Still, Xenoblade is likely to last me months (especially as I don't have much time for it in December), and Super Mario Maker and Splatoon haven't stopped being interesting. I won't be getting any less use out of my (very active) Wii U; I just won't be spending on new titles.
