Nintendo Direct coming November 12 [Over]

I skipped the whole hype train this time (too busy playing Legacy of the Void), but some quick reactions:

- Fire Emblem in February was the biggest thing out of the show for me. I rarely buy CEs even for my favourite series, and was planning to go digital, but this is one instance where I may be swayed. I'm unclear on whether Revelations (the third campaign) is free or a separate DLC purchase when you buy both Birthright and Conquest for $40+$20; can anyone familiar with the Japanese release provide insight?

- Cloud is the face of Square, but sticks out as a character whose game never appeared on a Nintendo platform, even more so than Snake (who had Twin Snakes). But the big middle finger to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is appreciated.

- The few seconds of the new Zelda are beautiful and reassuring.

- Something I'm already curious about re: Twilight Princess is if it will have support for both GameCube and Wii controls, and if so, whether it will follow the GCN version in supporting left-handed Link in the game's original (not flipped) orientation. I don't expect this to be the case at all (GamePad-only play is likely to stick with right-handed Link and the flipped world, I think), but I do wonder.

- Given Star Fox being pushed all the way to April, and that I'm not interested in Pokken, the picture for the Wii U doesn't look any better than it did in E3. I'm guessing SMTxFE/GIRFE will be coming late in the year, but I have my doubts that shoving it under the rug digitally like Fatal Frame has been ruled out. But at least some of the "Zelda will be taken off Wii U and moved to NX" doomsayers have been shown the door.

- Super Mario Maker discovery features are appreciated, and I play the game with a second screen open for codes and level browsing as it is, but more of these features in-game would have been nice.

- The Splatoon museum map is wonderful (if a little terrifying for someone who has actually worked with museums to see the wanton ISIS-style vandalism on display).

- I really wish the additions to Hyrule Warriors Legends would be offered as DLC or otherwise patched into the Wii U original, as I have zero intention of double-dipping. But the Linkle introduction video was conspicuously at console-grade resolution before it moved into gameplay footage, so maybe this will come at a later date?

- Of the third party and indie offerings, I would have liked to know if Image & Form are still porting SteamWorld Heist to the Wii U in HD post-release like they did for Dig, but barring any announcements I will probably grab Heist at launch for 3DS.

So: my 2016 shopping list remains unchanged. Fire Emblem, Star Fox (though with an April release I won't be able to play it until summer), Zelda late in the year, possibly Bravely Second and GIRFE. Nothing new from the show for me. Still, Xenoblade is likely to last me months (especially as I don't have much time for it in December), and Super Mario Maker and Splatoon haven't stopped being interesting. I won't be getting any less use out of my (very active) Wii U; I just won't be spending on new titles.

I thought the Direct was great. There was a boring section near the middle but it had many cool announcements.

Ending was very surprising too haha, Sakurai is a master.

Solid Direct for me. Shibata did his usual good job for us in Euro-land. New Indie guy was a bit odd, but I stopped caring when he started showing me games (Neo and Steamworld). Several games I want for myself on both 3DS and WiiU, and continued Splatoon support has cemented my idea to get Splatoon for my younger siblings this Christmas.

I went into this feeling really cynical about current games following Konami with MGS and EA with Battlefront, but Nintendo have cheered me up once again! :)

(If I had a complaint it would be that some of those dates seem quite far away... but I'm getting Xenoblade X, so if there was more coming out this year I probably wouldn't get to it until well into 2016 anyway.)

Quick impressions

- Twilight Princess HD is exactly what we should have expected: a remaster. I like the fact that i'll be able to play it again in HD and i absolutely love the Wolf Link amiibo, but i expected a bit more on the tech side (like better textures and WW HD's lighting engine adapted for this game).
- Zelda U is so beautiful it hurts my eyes. Only 5 seconds, left me wanting for more, but damn.
- New Splatoon content looked amazing.
- Starfox trailer was good, it showed more action and graphics got better although probably it still doesn't look as good as we hoped for before the announcement. We also finally got a release date, but i hoped it would come out a bit sooner.
- Mario & Luigi Paper Jam looks incredible, the concept is amazing and has a lot of potential, i hope Alpha Dream took their time to make the best use of it. Could be the best in the series.
- Dat FE special edition. Holy fuck.
- Dragon Quest VII-VIII finally coming to the west. FUCK YES.
- Dat Yokai trailer. LMAO. I want the demo in Europe now, c'mon Shibata!
- Linkle <3
- Pokémon Blue/Red/Yellow finally on the eShop, been waiting for this since i bought the 3DS.
- Cloud in Smash is a megaton, and could very well be a hint for VII-R on NX. It's also the first dlc character i'll buy.

- On the negative side, no tribute to Iwata made me a bit sad. I can understand why they didn't do it but i still expected to see something.
- No #FE. Why?
- I expected to see Minecraft Wii U Edition with huge amiibo functionality, like tap Samus amiibo and you get Metroid-themed assets, do the same thing with Link and you get Zelda-style assets, use Mario and you get Mario-style assets, etc. Nothing, not a word, and it should come out like... Next month according to PEGI?

Overall a pretty decent Direct, they showed a lot of stuff and the new footage shown was pretty good overall. Some things were underwhelming as well, but overall it's a solid 7.5-8. They've done better Directs, but also waaaaaaay worse ones.

Is there a list of everything they talked about and dates announced? I feel like I'm going to be spending a lot of money on 3DS games in early 2016. Which is great, because I bought so little for it this year.

Still not sure how I feel about the direct.

On one hand we got release dates for upcoming games, localization of a few 3DS JRPGs, Twilight Princess HD, Cloud for SSB, and Pokémon RBY for VC.

On the other hand we didn't get many reveals in the form of new games. I was hoping to see a new game that didn't seem low budget or a spin off, but I guess we won't be seeing stuff like that until the NX gets announced.

The Wii U line-up looks pretty pathetic so far, which is just really disappointing to me. 3DS stuff seems cool but I am much more of a console gamer, and I typically play more casual games on my 3DS (Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life, Style Savvy, Pokémon, Brain Age, etc). In that regard it's disappointing to not see Rhythm Heaven or Style Savvy have their sequels come to NA.

I was satisified and sakurai still saved the day in the end.

This is all nice, but honestly it made me even more excited about the NX.

Maybe it's just me, but I imagine ALL of this stuff being announced for the same platform, and it makes me feel faint.

I want to know too. I start work soon and can't watch yet!

Direct totally made me miss Iwata :(. Reggie and Bill don't cut it. As for the direct itself, it was ok I guess. Im not a FF fan so I giver zero shits about Cloud in Smash. Lots of great stuff coming out for 3DS and Wii U though. Disappointed nothing was said about Next Level's Metroid though :(.

Especially smash bros.. they are gonna resell that game with all the DLC characters on the cover and its gonna be fuckin bonkers

I've already pre-ordered the TPHD and MMLC bundles because of amiibo...send help now.

Anyway...
- TP HD may not wow initially like WWHD, but the textures are clearly better
- Star Fox Zero looks SO much better
- DQ7/8 coming to the west. FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY
- Pokemon games on VC. Good additions, but seemingly a bit late.
- Linkle...definitely a better design in the end.
- Cloud in Smash. All the WTF's
- Fire Emblem SE is alright.
- No Minecraft, no Fed Force, no M:ZM in the US, no Pokemon Z

8.5/10

TBH E3 was worse

I went into this Direct with little expectation and was pleasantly suprised

So, anything on the eshop or downloadable in general right after the direct?

There's XCX preload and Splatoon DLC, anything else?

Probably discussed somewhere within these hundreds of pages but what happened to Minecraft Wii U? If that was a real thing it would have been announced during the direct surely?

Agreed, it's a quick port job when Wind Waker HD had more done to it it seems, by both the EAD Zelda team and some high-res texture work from Hexadrive.

Let's stop spreading misinformation. Hexadrive did not do the textures. Digitalscape did (contract texture artists). Hexadrive had 2-3 staff who assisted getting the textures from Digitalscape back to EAD.

I really love the shitty teaser and gameplay videos in Nintendo Directs. The perfect way to not get disappointed but impressed when you buy the game hahahah

If that's accurate (did you gather that from the WWHD credits or somewhere else?) then my bad. Still, this looks like a quick farmed out port job in comparison, not that I expected anything else as Zelda's EAD team is busy. I'm happy for Twilight Princess HD existing, it's the only 3D Zelda I never beat because of that harsh opening. I'm willing to give it a second chance.

And I should add it does still look a bit prettier than the original. It has some higher res textures.

The continued support for Splatoon is top notch. I, for one, welcomed our new Nintendo Garage Overlords, ages ago.

Pokemon Picross was the best thing in there

DQVII finally coming is the second

all I wanted out of this was a Rhythm Heaven 3DS localization

Quite a wild Direct this one, with plenty of ups and downs.

Cloud for Smash is definitely appreciated by me though also bordering on something paradoxical and ironic as well when you consider that he comes from THE Final Fantasy game that led to Sony's success with its Playstation at the cost of no FF's for Nintendo platforms for a long while. I do like that Cloud's inclusion is so out there that my hope for Simon Belmont to whip into action all of a sudden doesn't seem so farfetched anymore (even considering Konami's current state...)

Both Twilight Princess HD and Zelda Wii U were appreciated, though I do wonder if the former will get some much needed tweaks and why the latter was only shown so extremely briefly. I also can't help but wonder why they are pushing Zelda so hard these past years instead of remastering some 3D Mario games from that era or giving other (dormant) IP's some attention (like Kid Icarus or Metroid).

I was quite pleased with Splatoon's DLC except for not including playable Octolings (the thing I'd care about the most, especially if they come with their own unique characteristics in order to function as this game's "heavies/tanks"). Far, far more disappointing than no Octolings though was that they didn't announce any new content for Super Mario Maker outside of the website to help search for levels (which was my least urgent request to be honest, although I can see why others would value it more). Hopefully this won't mark the end of their support for SMM.

Starfox Zero looked cooler than before, but I remain sceptical of its control scheme and lack of any narrative innovation (i.e. new characters, villains, etc.). Fire Emblem Fates looks cool still but also a bit too bloated in terms of DLC and versions. No Mother 3 for us in the West is a big, big bummer that almost seems inexcusable at this stage. Amiibo's seem to be pushed even harder than before, to the point of it becoming bothersome. The Mega Man Legacy Collection skipping Wii U still seems absurd considering their push for it on 3DS and for Mega Man in general. The Wii U version of Hyrule Warriors not getting the new 3DS content seems quite unfair as well, even though I'm not a fan of the game really.

Nothing else really caught my attention honestly, but I'm still glad the Directs are back (even when they do lack something significantly without Iwata...).
