NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

If TR flops horribly it's going to be REALLY hard for MS to convince publishers to do similar deals in the future. That's a problem for MS when their first party studios are so much smaller in scale (in terms of number of games they can put out per year) compared to those of Sony and Nintendo

Phil Spencer already said they are moving away from these type of deals as stated above. What they will do more of is like with Creative Assembly, Remedy, Comcept/Armature, etc. and get developers to make 1st party (ip's owned by MS) games for them.

There will always be studios like platinum, armature, remedy that they can contract to make games.

But a third party exclusive like TR? I don't see that happening again unless it's with Capcom lol

Stupid question from someone, who never actually bothered too much about sales numbers.
Especially in the last year we saw an increased number of content heavy open world games almost every month of the year.
Is it possible those games, especially considering the amount of time they occupy, keep people from buying more games? Do open world games cannibalize each other?

I think Phil said he was moving away from third party deals, or at least not relying on them as much going forward.

As for install base, I think MS gets back on the bigger side if they push forward to their supposed future of releasing things on Windows 10 as opposed to any single device. We've already had two MS execs says that's the plan, so who knows what they'll do when they finally get there.

So, like what everyone is doing except marketing deals that they can't get?

If Scalebound releases next holiday, I am predicting a similar outcome. Some games just aren't suited to crowded periods like the holidays. Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of them.

I think they said they'd be moving away from these sort of deals in the future iirc. Whether that's do to with them finding it hard to get publishers to sign up and/or because of TR and whatever went down with that.
We are moving away from exclusivity deals. They don't fit to our overall strategy.

We don't talk about sales numbers. Online statistics are much more important.

Console wars talk should end. It's immature.

Why not the top 50? Why not the hardware? Why not the whole data set in a .csv on a Dropbox?

They actually used to release data by SKUs, but they've instead decided to throw multiplatform games a bone by lumping all their sales together. (Why? Third-party lobbying, I'd imagine. Plus the console makers don't like people to see how narrow the retail market is becoming.)

Of course. I don't think Sony exiting the business is even a concern. I prefer having them at #2 though. PS+ last gen and free online was nuts. PSN worked better too.

If Microsoft or Nintendo start doing their job we won't see Sony being lazy. Playstation as market leader pushes japanese developers up. Look at SE on PS3 gen and now. Huge difference.

Good point. That's a very nice perk. However, even if the PS3 dominated in the U.S., SE would still be crappy during that gen. I think it's a combination of SE getting a new CEO and to a lesser extent, Sony being the market leader.

Man that AssCreed drop is massive. If this continues, I don't see how Ubi can justify those massive AssCreed teams they have, especially now that they have to contend with a possible hostile takeover from Vivendi.

Wouldn't be surprised if Ubi announces massive layoffs of their AssCreed teams a few years from now.

Maybe now Ubi will do that feudal Japan AssCreed most been wanting yet Ubi oddly refuses to do.

They don't really have an Assassin's Creed team. All those devs will just work on something else like Watch Dogs or Far Cry etc... Maybe we see that pirate open world game they were surveying soon.

It's for the best in November and December, unless you want 6 of the 10 titles to be Fallout 4, BLOPS 3, and Battlefront 3 next month (and probably December as well).

Quick summary for Uncharted Collection, please. How many copies + bundle ( if data exits ).

And also data for Assassins Creed : Syndicate.

Thanks! :D

Those leaked ads aren't actually read by most of the average consumer base. I would not attribute anything noteworthy to them. Still, I agree with the overarching sentiment: people are waiting.

I have a feeling this is what it is. Combined with more enticing November bundles.

So October is like that final preseason game where the novelty of Exhibition months has worn off, the teams have revealed their rosters, and everybody's just waiting for the season to kick off.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Wait, didn't leaked Holiday ads start appearing well after the period tracked for October NPD sales closed? In that case, attributing lower sales to people already knowing about specific Holiday deals wouldn't make that much sense.

So your plan was to only sell a paltry 305K with your largest franchise to boot?

And your plan was to hope Sony sold less instead of improving YoY (which lucky for MSFT that happened, and it would have looked even worse if Sony broke even with last October sales)?

I know your job is to PR, but that does not sound like some sound or exciting "plans", lol. More like lucky Sony did not have UC4 this October if these numbers are anything to go by.

November is going to be fun month for these threads.

Now that I think about it, do we have a decent recap of hardware Black Friday deals (i.e. not just the well-known bundles themselves, but special offers with coupons/free games etc.etc.)? I'd love, if possible, to make a comparison with last year's deals.

I am unsure when the ads came out to be honest, but people seen the price cuts, and knew last year had huge BF deals, so even without the ads timing, it is common knowledge to maybe wait if last year was any indication.

As for the bundles, those November PS4 bundles (CoD/Battlefront) have been high on the Amazon chart and stayed pretty much to this day in the same position since September. People are wanting those hot bundles. I know I have a Star Wars one pre-ordered, and will be selling my launch unit.

It's ridiculous to think Sony will get "complacent" even if Nintendo and Microsoft aren't competing with them. Sony aren't idiots - they know they're competing against smartphones, tablets, and all other kinds of entertainment mediums in this day and age.

Sony needs to work hard whether the Xbox or Wii U's selling or not.

Agreed. Some people's thought process, lol. They are not fighting on corporate levels like console fans. They are fighting themselves to look better every board meeting.

Their plan was yo sell most console. And they did. Stop nitpicking thier PR words now.

And what you mean by lucky? Thats like saying Sony got lucky because MS fucked up their initial reveal

You misspelled handhelds. 3DS and Vita are the platforms pushing Japanese developers "up" in the traditional market.

I don't understand how we're 2 years in and we don't have a single AAA title on PS+ when it's mandatory now. And don't get me started on U4 not having dedicated servers. I genuenly have no idea what the PS+ mandatory is for other than them taking all the money. They haven't shown what it's used for, and I wish someone would call them out on it.. preferably at a big show to humble and humiliate them a little bit.

If you're advertising your console's lineup to be the "greatest lineup", I would have expected the system to sell way better than 305K.

Sure and if you system is selling like hot cakes and you do 50$ price drop. It is also expected to have huge impact. But it did not. Now I know most of you guys will tell me oh but...all the best PS4 bundles coming in Nov. Well sure, but so are Xbox One.

All I am saying is, they both disappointed in numbers, saying one is more disappointing is silly.

Nov will be telling the most.

All I can say about Tomb Raider. I would've bought it if it came out on all platforms. I don't have an Xbox One and I won't buy an XB1 for that.

But I definitely would've bought it next to Fallout 4, don't know about you guys. I think it being a timed exlusive is more severe than it coming on the same day as Fallout 4, a week after CoD and a week before Battlefront.

What do I know though.

You should read this thread :

Are you buying an Xbox One to play Tomb Raider?

The conversation is about the PR statement, though, not about the PS4's sales nor was I claiming one is more disappointing than the other. If you want to talk about that, fine, but that's not related to the actual topic, which was Greenburg's PR. Considering you don't seem to have anything else to add, I guess the conversation is done?

I want 1 $10,000 csv on a dropbox for free please =D. Jk.

On a more serious note, Cosmic, any thoughts on how the PS4, XB1 & Wii U will do this holiday? Or how Nintendo Direct announcements affect likely US sales for the Wii U / 3DS (software/hardware)?

Also we have nothing on 3DS right?... I assume it's down YoY, but I'm curious by how much.

Edit: Wait, this is the quote from IGN "The company added that sales “have increased more than 20 percent in the first 10 months of 2015” year-over-year." for the Wii U. I thought it was easily down YoY. Is this software as well?

To be fair to Greenburg, what do you want him to say?

Are we assuming that servers for the PSN service are free?
