So is that Ronda GAF account for real or just a joke one? Looking at some of the previous posts, it kind of looks real to me. Would be cool if real.

More shocking is how incompetent she was at cutting the ring. It's understandable if she's not an elite boxer, but her whole striking game should be designed to get the clinch. The amount of energy she wasted chasing Holm is probably what cost her the fight.

There's a pretty good analysis here that I don't think has been posted. Pretty interesting stuff.

HOW HOLLY HOLM KILLED QUEEN RONDA ROUSEY

Great article, and I agree about her cutting off the octagon, however the foot positioning is why Holm landed so many clean lead lefts, when you allow a southpaw to get their lead foot on the outside you're giving them a straight line to your chin without threat of return fire because they have an escape angle.

Honestly that Mendes fight showed how bad his ground game is, so there is potential for him to get blown up for that in a future match.
.

he also pulls straight back after REACHING with that left hand punch of his. He gets tagged quite a bit moving straight away from the pocket.

didn't know Jerry Lewis was her trainer

Rogan, Ronda and Tarverdyan discussing Ronda's striking

Pure gold.

I mean being truthful her striking didn't look that bad in that particular video, problem is it isn't anywhere near "she can take out female olympic boxers", and the second problem is...she did none of that in her fight with Holly.

Joe has me dying at his hyperbole. Like bruh she doesn't look like shit in that video but I don't think you know what amazing striking looks like if you're cummin like a automatic hand sanitizer over that.

It's quite possible that they're romantically involved. When Ronda was coming to he gave off a very creepy vibe.

This may be true. As we all know that Ronda seems to get down quite often. Watch any of her Conan interviews and she'll confirm that without any hesitation.

I've said it before, but Luke Thomas's take on the fight is incredibly insightful. He gets more into the striking game, which Zahabi's video doesn't. You'll need access to the video of the fight so you can follow along, but it's definitely worth it:

Since his original one was banned, Firas Zahabi has released another version of his analysis in which he uses footage from his own gym to illustrate the match. Yes, I know the original is available on vimeo, but this is a good addition, nonetheless:

Holly Holm is a champion. She wasn't just handed a belt, she truly earned it. I wasn't paying attention to UFC for the past year or so, so I can't gloat, but y'all got played. I probably would have been there with you, too, but Jesus. Shit's obvious, looking back at it all. Seems like a lot of that has to do with a male dominated and cynical view of female sportsmanship. People weren't seriously looking at what Holm presented as a challenger, they were just playing along with a stupid, sexed-up narrative.

The first video I linked is fricken great because it celebrates the athleticism on display in the match. Specifically, Holm's. What she pulled off was nothing short of amazing. She was more than just some Buster Douglas character, catching Tyson on an off day. She employed pure science on Rousey. It wasn't a fluke. It wasn't a random bad call. It was years of brutal training, all about manipulating Holm's instincts to take on a master judoka. Holm is a champion worth praising.

Friends, it was all a work

Taz claimed Rousey deliberately lost to Holm and it was all part of a strategic plan, working in with Ronda’s increasingly packed career schedule.

“This has been done in the wrestling industry for years. A guy or girl is going to take a break or go away, or has an injury that they have to tend to, whatever the reasons are, and they’re a champion – you take the championship off of them. But you don’t want that person sitting home for five, six, seven months with that championship. It’s bad for business. Take the belt off her.”

Taz isn’t suggesting Rousey took a dive. She clearly got knocked out by Holm’s head kick but Taz believes Rousey’s poor game plan of aggressively attacking Holm in a stand up fight was a tactic she employed so Holm could beat her.

Also for everyone that slept on Holm, it would seem that she deliberately held back in previous fights

Winklejohn wasn't surprised by the result, only how quick it came about and even said Holm had intentionally held back in some of her fights since arriving in the UFC.

"Footwork is always the key for Holly Holm in her fights and Holly has held back a bit in the past and that was all part of the plan," he said.

Sorry, male fighter. I think he'll have made more than Brock after he fights Aldo, if he hasn't already.

I wouldn't think so. Connor has headlined one PPV, which did 825,000. That's a fantastic number, especially these days. But Brock headlined 5 PPVs, only one of which did worse than that (UFC 141 which did 800,000 buys). The rest did over a million. Brock is still their biggest draw ever.

So not worth it

Even keeping up kayfabe afterwards, Ronda will be huge once she makes the switch to WWE.

To be fair, Brock did those numbers back in days when regular UFC PPVs drew 1.5 to 2 times as much viewers as they do now, so relatively speaking it isn't that much of a difference. But McGregor is just starting, we'll see where he ends up. Like Ronda, his posturing and trash talking will only take him as far as his wins do.

Yeh, it's not really fair to compare buyrates to a few years ago when UFC was at its peak with PPV buys. Also Connor is in a much smaller weight class where it's harder to draw. His buyrate against Mendes was really impressive considering it wasn't for a (proper) title and Mendes isn't a big star

I'd still be amazed if Connor has somehow made as much money as Brock though.

I don't think Fedor Emalianenko or Tyson ever really fully recovered from their first big losses either. I think when you're built up to impossible levels, the physiological impact from a loss is far greater.

meh Tyson fucked up with putting the wrong people around him, and his old trainer/coach/father figure passed away. Don King + Robyn Givens? Ya done son.

The work angle is the stupidest thing to wake up to today. If there's no news other than her mandatory time off then I'd rather not discuss conspiracy crap.

How much has the sport shrunk in recent years, and why?

Feels like they get more coverage than ever. What's the hurdle stopping people from actually tuning in?

When a can like Rousey is the biggest draw, you know the sport is in bad shape.

They lost Bones, GSP, Silva, etc in a short time frame.

I don't think she'd given up, but that was definitely a sign of severe fatigue. Those arms dropping are what people do when they just got done moving but have like 5 more boxes in the truck. Lol

I don't think she necessarily gave up, but it was the moment when in her heart of heart she knew she wasn't getting out of that round. I think she knew she wasn't getting a submission after Holm escaped the arm bar and was maybe hoping a decision would go her way, though she probably knew how unlikely that was, but after she fell during the left hook you can see it in her face how she realizes how pointless to continue fighting is. It's actually a little sad.

It's shrunk a lot. The UFC has mismanaged their brand. There are too few new stars, and too many events, especially too many PPVs. Also, injuries during training have really gutted a lot of events.

The UFC has also been surrounding with controversy- the Jon Jones coke/hit-and-run/character issues, fighters being allowed to fight after pissing hot, Dana White criticizing Aldo for not fighting with a shattered rib (publicly!), the Reebok deal, and on and on.

I was a huge MMA fan during the Pride days, and enjoyed the UFC still when they absorbed Pride. But the last 3 years or so have really been downhill for the organization. I couldn't tell you the last time I bought a UFC PPV.

Far too many events, far too few with that big fight feel.
Monthly PPVs plus fight nights plus intermingles events even between those.
There are no real characters, no real stand out stars that are memorable at least not enough like there used to be.
