It came with an external component, s-video and audio mod (as well as Unibios).

I don't use it as RGB is king.

I didn't realize unibios worked on AES. That's pretty handy. And component is also a nice option for the NA crowd who has trouble scoring PVMs.

Got these from Mexico, MVS games are super affordable over there, specially since the US Dollar is super high a the moment. These were like $30 each, I also got Garou and Blazing Star for $60 each.

Wait like physically in Mexico? From an auction or do they actually have shops there that sell off arcade stuff?

There's an Ebay equivalent named Mercado Libre (Which I think it's the same company)
And also the Arcades.MX forums which are similar to Arcade Otaku.

I just had them shipped to my Uncle's address in Mexico and went to pick them up a few weeks ago.

That and some churros.

But how were the churros?

Considering picking up an MVS, but is there something I should be aware of? Also, does there exist a library of games for this console that is not superduper incredibly expensive, but still owrth getting, or do I look forward to $50+ prices for everything on it?

A lot of the fighting games you can get for under 50. Samurai Shodown, fatal fury, kof, etc. Some of the metal slugs I got for less than 50. Sports games are usually cheap except for a couple. Patience is key though, I set up tons of searches on eBay and watch them. I got some stuff of forums as well. Almost all the shmups are 50+,the smaller fighters as well. Puzzle bobble is cheap but boots are everywhere.

Absolutely, there are a lot of games that are under $50 and entirely worthwhile. I haven't found too many duds on the system in general, honestly. Even weird things like the horse racing ones are surprisingly well crafted.

My advice is to watch Yahoo Auctions Japan; a few times a year big lots of tons of stuff go when I assume an arcade shuts down or someone clears out a storage unit.

Thanks both of you, good to know its possible :)

It's like any other retro system. If you concentrate on just the big releases that everyone talks about, you're going to be miserable. Definitely get one or two things like Metal Slug 3 or Last Blade before they spiral completely out of control, but you'll probably find more joy in discovering weird little gems that are inexpensive.

The really awesome thing about MVS collecting is that it doesn't matter what region you get the game from; it's going to be in the language you pick provided you have a custom BiOS), or whatever region your system is from otherwise.

Anyone want to put together a list of good yet non-pricey (as of yet) Neo Geo games then?

AES?

Samurai Spirits
Samurai Spirits 2
Fatal Fury Special
Art of Fighting 2
Fatal Fury 3 No longer dirt cheap because lawless degenerates bought them all up to use the cartridge shells to make their filthy conversions and straight up boots.

That's it.

Should've been specific. I mean MVS carts, sorry.

how does it work exactly, can you just pop an AES cart open and clearly see it's a repro like genesis/NES etc?

You can but it's not easy because the cartridge sticker covers where the plastic shell meets on the top.

Are you going to bust open your AES Metal Slug and risk ruining the sticker just to confirm it's legitimacy?

The AES game ain't for the faint-hearted, fam.

The Axis of AESvil.

I would never buy an AES game from those countries because they have terrible bootlegging reputations.

Even Japan is not safe really. Apparently a lot of the bootleggers have been selling their stuff to the used Japanese game market.

The way I see it is with Japanese sites. Anything over 1000USD in value, I'd be wary of.

You can be fairly safe at big-name reputable stores selling used AES in Japan because they would rather commit sudoku than get a reputation for selling bootlegs. Online is a totally different barrel of fish.

You really only have to watch out for Metal Slug 1 and 2 which are the most common high-priced counterfeits. If you can afford MS AES then you can afford a plane ticket to Japan and check out the goods yourself.

If anyone offers to sell you a European copy of Kizuna Encounter, you yell "STRANGER DANGER!!", kick them in the junk, escape and report them to the authorities.

That's why I'll stick with my mvs generic label strips.

Even though mvs labels would be awesome...

Umm...anyone make mvs front labels?

someone should do a low-level breaking bad but instead it's about flooding domestic and foreign markets with AES boots

...i'd watch that

I've yet to see one at a decent store.

Mine and my friend's seperate experiences in Tokyo last year and this year - we both took loupes down and there were plenty of boots in "decent" shops. It's reckless to state that buying from "decent" shops means that you won't get a boot.

Good lord. I don't think I could take collecting for a console that necessitates loupe ownership.

It's absolutely ridiculous but if you're an AES collector you need to own one and know how to use it. Thanks bootleggers.

Time out, THATS what those mono-magnifiers are called?

Yup, jeweler's loupe. I got mine from a supplier to jewelers in our jewelry district.

Shopping for old games in Tokyo is the first mistake as the prices are jacked because that is where all the tourists go. I could easily envision some unscrupulous businesses trying con money out of naive enthusiasts with deep pockets.

I have yet to see a bootleg game being passed off as legitimate in any of the stores I frequent. I have however seen conversions sold as such in some places. I found a Puzzle Bobble MVS-to-AES conversion in such a store for thirty bucks, case and all.

the levels to this neo-geo life...my god

god bless you insane ballers, i just can't

I didn't choose the AES Life. The AES Life chose me.

Yeah, the funny thing about AES is that despite that there are so many alternate methods to play these games, they don't affect the value at all.

If anything, it seems every time these games are re-released on modern consoles, the value of the original AES carts just go up......
